You're forgetting one major thing. Those profits from the Titian and Tundra, don't stay in the US. I have no idea where Ram goes. Titan and Tundra are both bottom of the barrel as far as being competitive. The only redeeming factor for Toyota is you get the quality (real or perceived) of Toyota. The Titan is the value pick. Neither sell well.

I heard the IIHS is working on their newest test - known as the "Banana" test. it measures the impact a pedestrian might have if they slip on a banana peel and hit the car. All vehicles currently get 1 star on it, meaning all cars are now death traps.

In a word, no. The vehicle safety score that NHTSA and IIHS uses is currently based on 'old-school' metrics looking at the cage & frame design of the vehicle along with the seat and airbag designs that successfully protect the occupants. You hit the car and assess the damage, that simple. Now IIHS realizes the 21st century-appropriate vehicle safety score should include the driver-assist features like backup cameras, lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, etc. So far it started to include headlight reviews and does have one-off testing how effective the pedestrian avoidance systems are from different automakers (https://www.iihs.org/news/detail/performance-of-pedestrian-crash-prevention-varies-among-midsize-cars), but it is not a standard procedure just yet.

Be intentionally obtuse to your heart's content, a crash rating is exactly what the phrase implies.

If this thing is going to cost $30-40k, it’s a failure from the start. if it’s basically a mach-e with a different face and an ICE, it would probably do ok at that price range. But a wagon has no chance at that price. The Subaru Outback that they mention in the article is pretty much the only wagon that sells in any volume worth mentioning and it starts at 26k. Does ford think they can out-Subaru Subaru? I don’t think so.

Lot of fast cars out there, and going fast doesn't magically make them Mustangs.

There was a story from last year saying that Hyundai will be bringing a N version of the Tucson with 340 hp. So it appears other manufacturers are thinking about it.

Same for Camry, Corolla, Tacoma. It's boring but it's a winning formula if you have loyal buyers. I think Ford makes too many changes too quickly and that's costing them in warranty repairs and customer perception.

The biggest problem with oiled gauze air filters is that they get dirty/clog very quickly. They maybe "lifetime", but they require more frequent cleaning. As mentioned, they are known to cause MAF problems.
