  1. I'm not saying you’re wrong, but that's also not the full story here. Mortality rate of the flu is near 0.1%. Mortality rate of COVID-19when you take into account the antibody studies done by Stanford, USC and the State of New York (even with its incomplete sample size) is hovering near 0.5%. Those Fatality numbers also appear to be inflated because of numerous reports across the country of hospitals coding deaths as COVID-19 even without a positive test. I don't feel like we we'll ever get truly accurate fatality numbers from this.

  2. If you have twenty minutes, listen to this most interesting discussion with Automotive News editor, Jason Stein, and Morgan Stanley analyst, Adam Jonas. They talk about AV's, EV's, Ford, the industry in general and the future of dealers. Ford content at about the 14:30 mark. https://www.autonews.com/weekend-drive-podcast/daily-drive-podcast-april-27-2020-adam-jonas-risk-zombie-industry?utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook&utm_term=automotive news&utm_content=715e3c41-6d58-4635-9b76-4ca639a06c99

  3. I don't disagree with the listed pros and cons except it leaves off a pro for Mass Transit, particularly rail, and that is Less Stress/Avoidance of Traffic. I am not good with traffic it annoys me. And it causes a commute to vary in time daily making planning more difficult. Not to mention being on a train allows one to read, text or even watch videos during the commute.

  4. Several Explorers have had the same issue. https://www.explorerforum.com/forums/threads/brake-issue.483026/ Vibration could be striving (drive shaft) or bad wheel balancing. Have them road force balance each tire. There should be no vibration from "big wheels". I have 21s on my ST and it drives very smooth.

  5. Its worse than the flu yet more people die yearly FROM the flu ?

  6. The Fiesta had an ST-Line for its final year which I'm guessing no one noticed.

  7. I would be satisfied with the current step. Hopefully this is just an optional gate for certain trims. IIRC, the GM one is only available on Sierra's, not Silverado's.

  8. They did years ago. Instead of improving cashflow, they blew it all on stock buybacks

  10. I always thought it a bit of a marvel. Full width power window, swung out like a door, or down like a tailgate.

  11. Far better than the ovid-boring-jelly bean Ford Escape.

  12. I really wish Ford would add this as an option. I would be awesome for unloading my fifth wheel hitch, and would be great to be able to load things into the back of the truck when the fiver is hooked up.

  13. My moms 1972 LTD Country Squire did the same thing. it was cool AF but I was 9 years old too.

  14. The TRD (to me at least) seems like it would be more of an off road package, due to its T(u)Rd heritage with their pickups.

  15. If anything it is going to increase the use of mass transit since people are losing their jobs. Mass transit is the cheapest way to get around.

  17. It appears Ford feels obligated to get into the tailgate wars. I have the current tailgate step and I find it very simple and useful. I can’t say whether this new type of tailgate is useful without using it of course, but overcomplicating things worries me. The one thing I never liked about the GM design is the ability for the tailgate to hit a hitch, so perhaps they Can figure out how to avoid that.

  18. Why the screaming hell did Ford give NA the "differently abled" nose, and give the better one to other markets? For that matter, who the hell signed off on the junk snoot we have here? Fire their ass(es)!!!

  19. Looks like it'd definitely interfere with a hitch. It looks to be right where the hitch would go. I'm not sure there's a way to avoid that short of the tailgate sliding underneath the bed floor.

  20. Hopefully it doesn't drop down low enough to interfere with a trailer hitch or trailer tongue. Looking at the sketch it appears as though it might. If so, I assume you would also have the option of not folding the tailgate when a trailer is attached.

  21. Took a look at one of the local Subaru dealership and 95% of the Outback models where in the $30-40k range. I wouldnt read into the pricing too much on this Ford product, since it should be right around that. As for Ford competing with Subaru-I’m sure they are planning on using the same techniques they are going to use against Jeep with the Bronco Sport and Bronco. Ford identified these markets that have limited competition and a decent profit margin-that’s why they are going after them.

  23. No, I understand what you're saying now, I honestly thought some of this stuff was already a part of a vehicles safety score. I guess what I'd like to suggest then, is to say that the current system is insufficient and suggest it can be improved. Like you said, it's not just tires... but if you created a whole accident avoidance metric that included tires, automatic breaking, rear-view camera, and blind-spot assistance you start to have an entire metric of accident avoidance. Like Dlight was saying, perhaps the crash rating is insufficient today, and should instead be one half of a more comprehensive "Vehicle Safety" rating system that includes. What do you think about something like that?

  24. No, you’re failing to comprehend the meaning of crash rating. It measures the impact to driver and passengers if a crash occurs. Because the vast majority of crashes can’t be avoided with better tires, it’s a nice theory but virtually never happens in real life. If somebody runs a red light and t bones you better tires don’t help. It’s not that it doesn’t help - but that’s a completely different attribute that’s almost impossible to measure as it relates to crash avoidance. Even with better tires it’s more based on driver skill and attention.

  25. In a word, no. The vehicle safety score that NHTSA and IIHS uses is currently based on 'old-school' metrics looking at the cage & frame design of the vehicle along with the seat and airbag designs that successfully protect the occupants. You hit the car and assess the damage, that simple. Now IIHS realizes the 21st century-appropriate vehicle safety score should include the driver-assist features like backup cameras, lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, etc. So far it started to include headlight reviews and does have one-off testing how effective the pedestrian avoidance systems are from different automakers (https://www.iihs.org/news/detail/performance-of-pedestrian-crash-prevention-varies-among-midsize-cars), but it is not a standard procedure just yet.

  26. It is the one of the modern ironies how customers look at 4-star or 5-star crash ratings when most drivers (hopefully) don't get into severe crashes like that. The 'emergency handling' or accident avoidance system, essentially advanced driver-assistance system, would be a more realistic way to measure if we're talking about avoiding crash in the first place, and in that case the tires play some role. The robustness & quality of the sensors and cameras have a stronger role however. Tires still have so many importance such as braking, handling, traction, ride quality & noise, etc. etc. but crash test rating is one thing that won't be a contributing factor.

  27. Be intentionally obtuse to your heart's content, a crash rating is exactly what the phrase implies.

  28. Not sure how that atrocity (Escape) could be made to look "Macho" or "high performance" with out looking like that car from Cars movies. This current management team doesn't want to sell "afforable" vehicles right now. They are only concerned with "how much can we make right now". When the future arrives with different tastes, they will scramble to react. This current philosophy is very short term gain biased. Saddens me that this is what the once mighty Ford Motor Company has become.

  29. Ford could easily take the Chinese escape interior and modify it a bit to suit American needs. There’s plenty of area to put physical buttons. They also need to bring that screen here fast. Kia seems to be rolling out the 10” screen on everything these days (I briefly looked and the soul, seltos and telluride all have one). The screen is such a focal point in an interior that it can completely change the look. It can make the interior seem more luxurious than it actually is. For example, here is the seltos (a sub compact cuv) interior. I think it’s a pretty nice interior and looks more handsome then the escape.

  30. AK, From my perspective, not sure I think of the word "charismatic". Charismatic to me conjures up images of "charmers". And when someone is a "charmer", the other labels I might hang on them would be "bullshitter or even "phony". Fine line IMO between all three. Rather I would think of "believeable" as a more meaningful label. And along with that label, I would say does the person have the complete package that at least in my mind includes relevant knowledge and a resume that fits the task at hand. Now I know many would say a good manager/leader is a good manager/leader regardless of the environment he is in, I guess that is why you see so many CEO's who jump from one industry to another. Again just my viewpoint that says Mulally with his background/experience, coupled with his sincere demeanor was a much better choice than a guy who was an AD at a university and ran an office furniture company. But I agree with your point about results. Do I like Trump's demeanor? NO. Has he obtained some meaningful results? IMO, yes.

  31. BTW - am I the only one who doesn't give a rats behind whether the President, Governor, Senator or CEO is charismatic or not? All I care about is what they do or don't do. If they're likeable that's a bonus.
