  1. A lower two-tone paint treatment would have been a nice touch though and helped differentiate the King Ranch model... similar to the old Eddie Bauer model.

  3. I watched a You Tube video that showed some of the ways Ford decontented the 2021 Explorer as they dropped the base price $2,000. Two areas were cheapening the console and glove box. I'm sure there were other areas.

  5. In terms of UK registration costs, passive hybrids, hybrids and PHEVs are all classes as alternate fuel vehicles which means no tax in first year and a flat £140 per year after that regardless of the CO2 banding. So the engine size doesn't come into it with hybrid/PHEV so I'm thinking the 1.5 EB I not needed for this application. By comparison, petrol and diesel vehicles in their first year of registration are taxed on their CO2 band which becomes quite expensive with high CO2 emitters but all go to single £150 in the second year.

  8. Bullshit. Crossovers and body on frame SUVs are not the same vehicle. An Escape or RAV4 is a totally different vehicle than a Bronco, expedition or highlander. These are very real and very objective differences. And like I said above there are tweeners like grand Cherokee, Bronco sport and Explorer that are unibody but very rugged but those are exceptions.

  10. The one really unique feature of the King Ranch, regarding the powertrain at least, is that rear wheel drive is offered with the 3.0L EB V6 engine. The engine was previously only offered with all wheel drive for the ST and Platinum. Yes, I also think the brown/tan lower two-tone paint would have been nice for it. But I do like the new Explorer King Ranch with how Ford has done with it. I'm not usually a fan of brown/tan interior but always liked how the King Ranch looked on the other Fords.

  12. The grille is the same as the xlt grille but just a different color. The wheels are the same as the limited’s wheels. If I saw this driving down the road, I’d guess it was a limited. I would have liked to see a bit more differentiation from the other models, but I guess you are paying for the interior and the bigger engine. The ST is a better value and looks different from the other trims.

  15. We considered waiting on the King Ranch Explorer for the interior color (not black, not sandstone), but were disappointed to see that they maintained the same exterior look as the other Explorers. It is too bad that Ford doesn't try to give the pricier Explorer models a cleaner/more upscale look like the Lincoln Aviator. With the King Ranch Explorer off the list, we ended up buying a 2021 Aviator Reserve II with the Roast interior before it even hit the dealer's lot.

  17. Comparing a car released 15+ years ago to one released today? The current one isn't retro. At least Mustang's retro design was of a vehicle people loved and clamored for. Can the same be said of this Hyundai? No.

  18. I would agree. All the major manufacturers produce good, reliable vehicles with minor differences between them. I highly doubt brand new vehicles have all sorts of problems. Explorer was the anomaly with serious launch problems. In fact, many drivers don't even bring their vehicles in for recalls. Many of the problem areas listed by CR are long term problems like oil leaks, power window malfunction, engine light on, and the like. As for rattles and squeaks, they are most common long term after hitting hundreds of potholes. My Subaru Crosstrek was rattle free first 2 years, and last year had annoying unsolved rattle. My 2002 Taurus was rattle free right up to 2017 when I sold it. One recall and no problems other than wear and tear for 15 years. But I bet CR gives it poor rating. No rattles in my Escape 10 months in and 2 drivers.

  20. When American Motors, which owned Jeep in the 1970s, introduced the first Cherokee for the 1974 model year, it first received the blessing of tribal leaders. (I'm guessing tribal leaders received a loaded, brand-new Cherokee.) There is a photo of AMC officials and tribal leaders with a 1974 Cherokee in Patrick Foster's book, American Motors: The Last Independent.

  22. Geez what a half baked effort and they could of at least had some unique exterior trim elements. I’m in Birmingham Alabama for a few days and next door is a Ford dealer They had two Explorers unlocked so i checked out the interiors and still see glaring quality issues which would drive me fucking insane if i to look at it everyday. Big panel gap around the center stack where the trim from both sides was misaligned and sticks out some. Glove box latch and rear seat fold down latches took an exceeding amount of effort. I messed with them several times and was just perplexed by this type of oversight. The small bin in the center console is not only cheap but the carpeted trim doesn’t even closely fit into the bin. And one of these vehicles had a noise coming from back of the dash like a switch was opening /closing. Maybe that is corrected at PDI but not sure. In many ways I think the Explorer is a pretty good vehicle but was hoping some of these oversights would of been corrected by now.

  23. Thanks! Yep 4 x 4. I do not like the 22 inch factory wheels. They are coming off this weekend. But the smallest wheel you can put on is a 20 inch due to the brake caliber size. I hate the sorry factory Hankook tires that are squishy and soft. Could have made it through the crap in Texas and New Mexico much better if I had the Toyo all terrain 10 ply tires on 20 inch wheels that are going on it. Need Idaho worthy tires. Not Florida freeway slicks! Ha ha! I will have four 22 inch wheels for sale if anyone is interested.

  27. Ok I think I get what you’re saying. But I believe all of CRs data comes from owner surveys so their data is driven by actual owner experiences. Im guessing the only thing that is from CR themselves is the in depth reviews.

  29. Let’s not forget that some brands (Honda, Toyota) are notorious for “silent recalls” where they just fix problems when the owner brings it in for service. No recall, no publicity. So it’s hard to compare.

  30. I’m not sure these are necessarily out of the norm. Is Ford just being far more proactive issuing recalls instead of just doing customer satisfaction programs or TSBs out of an abundance of caution?
