  1. Yet the majority of customers know more than a salesman.

  2. You can’t build those AND new BEVs AND existing cash cows without spending billions on new factories which will be empty a decade or two down the road. And spending that money means cancelling existing projects. Importing is a better solution but that may be too expensive or have political implications.

  4. Most people under 40 will go for the online buying experience most of the time. Even many between 40 and 60 know to search new / used inventory online and then go to the dealership already interested in a specific vehicle that is supposedly in stock. I have to agree 99% of the time I know more about the car I want than the sales person does. Also I hate negotiating a price when I just want the out the door price and then an offer for my trade, while they just want to keep playing the monthly payment shell game where they don't want to tell you the length or interest rate of the loan or the new car / trade value in the contract until you are ready to sign to a specific monthly payment. Finally I dread the sales pitch for the extended warranty options none of which do I want, but the poor finance person is rewarded / punished based on how much extended warranty they sell. Also I always finance through my credit union, dealer options are rarely better and often worse if you read the fine print. Like if my payment is 500 and I send 1000 this month, my credit union says, hey buddy your paid up for two months next payment due in August or you can send more in July and pay it down farther, or not its up to you!. Ford says that nice you sent extra, you still need to pay the regular payment in July. No one talks about these things but they matter! Overall its a horrible experience. These people have the state legislatures in their pocket with campaign donations that is the only reason the current system still exists. I have never been to a Tesla show room but why can't I go test drive a model / trim I am interested in and ask question and then go home an order when I have done same with competition? Extended warranty would be check box on the web order form like apple care for iPhone or iPad. I refinanced my house during the pandemic all from my living room with my little local credit union. Why can't I buy a car this way too? Carvana will drop off a car to me and pick up my trade. Its 2022 I am sick of car dealers operating like its 1978! Old people can have their kids help them. I help my elderly father with his last vehicle purchase. How does Telsa warranty service work? This is where a Ford show room / service center will still be needed perhaps. Maybe they have to send someone to pick up the car / drop off a loaner. But I hate many dealer service centers also as I go in for a recall and they tell me I need other non warranty repairs that my local NAPA mechanic tells me the next week I don't need yet or at all. As soon as the 3/36000 is up the my cars usually never see the dealership service center again. The NAPA guy might have to work a little harder to fix the more complex problems, but he never tries to sell me what I don't need and is generally 25 to 33% or more less than dealerships. OK. I am done venting. I say losing the dealers to Ford owned show rooms and service centers is the lesser of two evils.

  5. This just further proves how reliable modern cars are, but also the flaws associated with echo chambers. We're talking about a .1% failure rate during the introductory phases of a popular product, and an issue that won't cause issues for the overwhelming majority of owners moving forward. Yet despite that, people on the bronco forums are freaking out because they're actively seeking out people who are having issues. This often leads people to the faulty conclusion that this issue is more widespread than it really is.

  6. Yeah, Ford continually exiting every segment is annoying. I get they can't do everything for everybody. But when you drop cars to be SUVs/trucks only, and then you're now dropping half your SUV/crossover lineup, it's not a good look. At least they have Bronco sport in the compact segment, but Bronco and Edge appeal to too different demographics.. Flex was a fantastic vehicle when it debuted, and easily the best product in the lineup. It too had a loyal following, but they literally never updated it aside from a different screen inside and a mild refresh. It's a shame they couldn't recreate that package.

  7. If Ford is insistent on bringing back more old names, then I say we need a cucumber probe ASAP.

We've got to go 100 percent online. There's no inventory, it goes directly to the customer. And 100 percent remote pick up and delivery," said Ford CEO Jim Farley. 4

  10. My friend had a scheduled build week for the week of June 6th (this week) and his sticker showed up last Thursday June 2nd, with the tracker currently showing “In Production”. Start looking for your sticker towards the end of this week!

  11. I hated to see Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis and Focus wagon dropped, but Ford doesn't owe it to me to build cars with inadequate return on investment, and I will adjust to what is available and affordable if/when I buy again

  12. except imo it’s a fine line…..you can only cut back so much sales/volume before people just plain start looking elsewhere.

  13. akirby just beat me to it in responding. Quite frankly, I'm getting tired of this nonsense with people thinking there's some sort of conspiracy preventing their vehicle from getting scheduled and built as soon as they'd like. And I'm tired of having to constantly repeat answering the same issues over and over and over. This is becoming a waste of my time spending hours and hours making sure everyone has the latest, factual information from Ford and then having to listen to the constant whining.

  14. But they’re at different dealers. Each dealer has their own queue and when supplies are scarce they can’t build all orders every week.

  15. How many times do we have to keep saying this? THERE ARE COMMODITY ISSUES ON EVERYTHING. The trucks ahead of yours could not be built because all the parts weren’t available. It’s that simple.

  16. Exactly. Explorer was a fundamental icon level program so it was untouchable. Edge didn't have that kind of history to lean on in the US. And the replacement was tied up in Ford's internal politics over the demise of "OneFord" with Europe, China, and US all proposing different replacement paths. The US-backed CD6 Edge was pretty far in the development process before Hackett pulled the plug on it. And the Chinese version (probably based on existing CD4 platform) I believe was resurrected once Ford China was set free from "OneFord" and became the Equator. Not sure what happened to Ford Europe's "Kuga Plus" version but it never happened.

  17. That’s a popular theory but not sure it happens in actuality. Not having Ranger or Maverick sure didn’t hurt F series. If you have really good differentiated products you’ll get sales either way.

  18. Mine is a L Black label, Yacht Club interior, rear center console delete, 2nd row massage, heavy duty tow. MSRP when I ordered was $109485, looks like it has increased about $2k (not including dest/acquisition fees). Hm. I never heard 2nd row massage was a constraint item.

  20. It may not be a good look to the casual observer, but it is a good business plan. Amid the ongoing automotive industry revolution, Ford has a better chance of becoming a leader in BEV if as akirby mentioned the company cancels projects that don't have a good internal rate of return and discontinues product lines that don't stand out among competitors.

  21. Just FYI - it’s Canyorado….. ? I would be very interested in this configuration. I haul a lot of long lumber and a 5’ bed doesn’t cut it.

  23. On the other hand, you've got good dealers like Mankato Motors who I've bought two VWs from. They also carry Nissan and a decade ago when the Leaf first came out they flat bedded another dealers demo nearly a hundred miles so a customer could test drive it.

  24. Yeah, but I see cases like Oz being test cases towards everyone doing this wherever they can. Manufacturers get the full retail margin, minus a handling fee. Tesla have shown it works.

  25. I think Ford has already walked back most of what Farley said to just online digital sales contracts with buyers

  26. Honda and Mercedes have gone to this model here in Oz. Set prices, no negotiation, dealer acts as agent, gets a fee for "handling" the vehicle. The automaker is the "dealer" and owns the (one) dealer license.

  27. I enjoyed his info, as it created more discussion. But what I didn't like was that any discussion and uncertainty of his info led to an absolute argument about how his info was 100% accurate, when 1) it wasn't; he was often right, but also often wrong, and 2) often it was just an open conversation about "what if they ____" that was contrary to his info, therefore not worth discussing.

  28. Those things were factors in 2021 but it’s obvious that supplies of chips in the last six months are still very limited and will remain so well into next year. This is something most in the automotive corporate world never saw coming and can do precious little to overcome. It was a huge mistake to assume that they could just stop chip orders and simply restart them at a later date. That is clearly not understanding that your critical suppliers don’t depend on automotive chip sales and have actually moved on and reconfigured their plants to make other more valuable chips.

  29. There's a handful of dealer chains that are public corporations (they issue stock) and thus have to publicly report their financials and break down profit by area. Pre-COVID they usually reported single digit profit margins for new and used sales and profits ranging up to around 30% for parts and service. With the current auto shortage those sales profits have improved a bit. In this brave new world of new car sales at MSRP which is the same as Invoice price dealers will only have Holdback and other incentives to cover the overhead of new car sales and hopefully turn a profit. The good news is that this new sales model will reduce overhead substantially as expenses like sales staff salaries, flooring cost, and acres of storage space are reduced.

  30. Don't the dealers on here tell us all the time they don't make much if anything on sales? Sounds like this can save them the overhead of a sales staff that doesn't pull in much profit anyway. Focus on service and have a few people there to get people in their new rides when they show up, or walk them through the online process with a set price (or do it for them and have them sign where they need to for the older non tech savvy people).

  31. Need has nothing to do with it. A Mustang is a purchase made with the heart, not the head. Nobody needs anything more than 4 cylinders in a car but plenty of people want 8 cylinders.

  32. My Navigator is finally in production!! Ordered as soon as the books opened in October, L black label. Pristine white with yacht club interior. Until this week, I was pretty close to thinking I would be getting a 23 instead of a 22 !

  33. But this also when BEVs become more prevalent in the lineup too. When the most successful BEV manufacture does this, it raises eyebrows and the vast majority of buyers don't like dealing with the current dealership model. Outside of buying a home (and that most of the time favors the seller), there really isn't another sales model that uses this approach. Plus I'm betting Ford is seeing that it is much more profitable this way then the old overproduce model that has been going on for the past 50+ years.
