Exactly. I like their approach, and they are one of the only OEM's (Ford is another) that have enough hybrid sales to use this approach. The more I read about issues with dendrites in solid state batteries, the more I appreciate Toyota's approach.

The Chevy HD redesign is the primary reason I ordered a 22 F350.  I have had 8 or 9 new Chevy trucks until now.  Even with the obsolete technology and crappy interior I would have bought another one if it wasn't so darn fugly.  I had a '15 1500, '17 1500, '19 3500 and the interiors and features were identical - except the '19 LTZ still ran halogen headlights and no LEDs anywhere.  Chevy didn't update anything in those trucks in over 5 years.  No blind spot monitoring, no adaptive cruise, no DEF gauge, small screen, no TPMS for the truck in the '19.  GM is focused on EVs and the brand loyalists that will buy a GM product because they always buy a GM product.  Look at Cadillac as a prime example.  Cadillac SUVs are just overpriced versions of the Suburban or Traverse.  They offer nothing interesting, premium, or different other than the grill emblem and sticker price.

Transit must be included in this list too, correct? I can't imagine it wouldn't be, it (along with F150) are the foundation of their plans for continued/expanded small business services.

It also costs about $5000. It's not what the US market wants but it does demonstrate that GM knows how to make affordable EV, which was my point. And it has such a big lead on affordable EV in China that it cannot be dismissed as a neophyte.

By comparison, Mazda charges $34k for MX-30 with the 100 mile range in the US. Let say making a bigger Wuling Mini that will pass US safety regs while keeping range at 110 miles will roughly double its price... you are still at $10k vs. Mazda's pathetic attempt at $34k.

The one thing that jumped off the page in that article is the claim "It would be the easiest fit, Drake said, since it's scheduled to use Ford's next-generation dedicated EV architecture and wouldn't require as much additional investment as other North American plants." referring to OAC.

I thought OAC is getting MEB? Or have Ford's plans changed again?

If OAC is still getting MEB, then this person loses credibility immediately for such a fundamental mistake.

Spending $70 billion is sufficient indication that Toyota is in the game. Spending another $17.5 billion on battery plants alone trumps what Tesla or any BEV start up is doing. Toyota is further along in its research on solid state batteries than Tesla. It is not the Japanese way to bleat out GM-like PR announcements every other day - their actions speak for them. You, nor anyone else, knows the future of the auto industry is 100% electric vehicles. Please calm down with the hype.

You are kidding yourself if you don't think GM are well down the path with Brightdrop (or whatever it's called). The product is coming and represents a real threat to Ford (although I don't believe GM have the knowledge or relationships in this segment that Ford have). It will be interesting to see if Ford do with Transit EV what they are doing with F150 EV, which is to move to a true EV skateboard chassis as soon as they can. I don't know if Ford sees the current Transit EV as a transitional product (ala current F150 EV) - GM's approach is to go straight to the dedicated EV chassis, so if they're right, Ford will have to move quickly.

    Out of Mexico, to... ?
It's going to be one of the existing plants in proximity to the 2 battery plants being built in Kentucky.
Maybe MME will supplant Escape sales, allowing Louisville enough down time to be converted?

Yeah I'm sure longer term Ford will wind up with something similar.  GM is in a position with lesser Express sales that they're willing to jump way out there, while Ford has to maintain the existing Transit sales while also pushing forward.

I'll say it again - pay attention to the battery plants and where they are built (and where the new ones are announced to be built).  I think it can be argued that Louisville's future as an EV plant is secured because of the location of the 2 battery plants that Ford will be building nearby. I can't see any existing Ford plant being converted to EV without a concurrent plant for battery production nearby. It will interesting to see how Ford plan to supply Mexico and OAC going forward (in terms of the location of the battery production). Something has to be done for OAC soon to be concurrent with OAC plans, likewise something presumably is planned to supply Mexico as production ramps up for MME, and EV Explorer/Aviator.

BOC demonstrates Ford's ideal model for an EV plant: battery construction on site to eliminate freight costs, reduce inventory, etc. etc..

Disagree. EV skateboard allows for tremendous leeway to designers to increase interior space and reshape the proportions of the vehicle. If they choose to take advantage of the opportunity. The Jaguar EV (name escapes me right now) is a good example: interior space on par with the XJ, but exterior size on par with a C class vehicle. That said, there are only so many ways to skin the cat, so except for whackadoodle things like the Tesla pickup, most of the form factors will remain the same (which is sort of your point).
