  1. I wonder what would have been the reaction if Ford had made the MKT as a sedan with a genuine trunk.

IMO, that change would completely transform the MKT's looks and make it more appealing to everyone.

Then they'd have made another MKS. ;) I do wonder why they built the TC replacement on the MKT instead of a lengthened MKS; I understand that the MKT is already a lengthened D3, but if you're altering it for the livery trade, you might as well go with the sedan form that's already used. Maybe the MKT is in a small enough niche that they thought the association with fleet queens wouldn't harm it as much as it would the MKS...

  2. Adding the 6F35 conventional automatic transmission to the Focus in addition to the current manual and powershift DSG.

If they were only going to use the PowerShift, then I'll agree with that, but if they were going to use the DSG and a "conventional" ATX, I don't see how using a standardized Ford slushbox would add any complexity over using some other slushbox. In that case, it only makes sense to use their standardized 6-speed instead of some other random slushbox.

If I'm wrong about them using a conventional ATX in addition to the DSG, my mistake, never mind...

Curious. You must pick your spots carefully, as this map suggests it goes straight to 'pop' for most people, with a smattering of soda-ites up to KC.

Interesting map. Around central OK, it's usually "Coke" and sometimes "pop," but some of the old-timers, particularly in the rural areas, will say "soda pop." If someone says "soda," they're usually Not From Around Here.

  4. That is the clincher in your statement, is a 6-speed auto justified for Focus?

Customer demand is never unneeded complexity, let's see what happens....

If it's the same basic 6-speed ATX that Ford and GM co-developed, the question is "how could they justify any other ATX?" That same basic ATX is used in a boatload of Ford vehicles, so using it would simplify the supply chain, not add complexity.

I do agree with your basic premise, though. It really grinds my gears that I can't buy a new F150 without a slushbox. Not having a manual in a truck is just sinful. :censored:

  5. Heard on the local news last night - "economists predict $5 per gallon gas by summer"

"Economists" have been predicting that every year since 2005 (at least), and you can see that those predictions have been about as accurate as the rest of their predictions. (Sometimes I think the only purpose of economists is to make weather guessers feel not quite so bad about missing their predictions. But I digress.)

Eventually they might be right--heck, a stopped clock is right twice a day--and Ford is well-positioned if that does happen (and prompt people to buy new cars with greater fuel efficiency), but I wouldn't bet any money on it happening in any particular year.

  6. dont understand the need for a mix, and if the leather is on non wear parts why not sibstitute a Vynal look-alike?....

Probably because we hunted naugas to extinction back in the '70s. ;)

Dunno about you, but if I'm paying $30K+, I expect the leather to be real leather, not some cheap knock-off. I've done my time in vinyl seats; there's no comparison between it and leather.

  7. 170 KPH is 105 mph which is 35 mph above the fastest posted interstate speed limit

I agree with your over-all point, but some of the turnpikes in Oklahoma (including most of I-44 from MO to TX) have 75mph speed limits, and there are highways in Texas with 80mph speed limits...which really isn't fast enough, given how far apart things are out there... ;)

  8. Obviously, Ford didn't see the need for an alternative Mustang (ie: non V6 / V8) when they were planning the current model

I think they saw it, but at least in part of the delay was that they didn't have a suitable engine supply for that base model when the other new mills were ready; now that the new smaller EBs are coming online, that's changing. It fits with the pattern Ford has been showing lately of rolling out new technologies and powerplants as they come online rather than missing the curve by waiting until everything is ready.

  9. The point I was trying to make is that in my experience carbon fiber has proven to be very durable in that application. Modern bows can shoot arrows at speeds over 400 feet per second with 160 lbs of kinetic energy.

CF has also proven durable in fishing poles, but neither is really comparable to a driveshaft, because the stresses they endure are completely different--there is little, if any, torsion on arrows or fishing poles. I'm not saying CF driveshafts aren't possible or durable, just that arrows aren't a good analogue for them.

  10. And the FBI "Fringe Division" is now driving Nissans - at least in this universe. The lovely Olivia used to drive only Fords.

At least it was subtle--they just drove Fords. The shows weren't loade with beauty shots of the cars, and I don't recall Olivia ever whipping out a Windows Phone in some contrived circumstance and saying "go ahead and Bing that." Auto company sponsorships are nothing new--after all, the original McGarrett and his guys drove Mercs because Mercury provided the cars--but the placements on the new show are jut awkward and blatant.

Of course, back on topic, it's not particularly odd to me to see ChryCos in cop shows--I see plenty of Chargers in police livery. And they're still ugly as sin. ;)

  11. Hawai Five-O has a deal with Chevy, which is why you see pretty much all Chevrolets, including the police vehicles, and the vilians driving something else.

I like the show for the most part, but the producers of the new Hawaii Five-O are shameless whores; they sold the show to Chebbie and Microsoft, and the product placements are about as subtle as a Bikini Atoll blast (I don't care that they got sponsors, but it'd be nice if they weren't so "in your face" and awkward with the placements). It's particularly noticeable when you watch the first two episodes--Dano's Mustang GT from the pilot suddenly becomes a Camaro in the next episode (BTW, this apparently irritates the Chebbie-heads--they use V8 sounds, but it's V6 car). At least McGarrett's Merc made a couple of cameos...

  12. Don't count out 'loomnum body panels, particularly up front. My LS has more dents and dings than I'd care to admit, but none of them are in the 'loomnum panels. I got caught in a hail storm a few months ago, and I got dings in the roof, even in an area where the curve of the steel should have helped avoid them, but the fenders, hood, and decklid all came through without so much as a ding.

  13. I don't think they would call the MKZ a "personal concept car".

Maybe not, but the way they're discussing "personal luxury," they're not talking about a "personal" car so much as one that's customized to the buyer's tastes. I recall reading something about them introducing a "concept" MKZ at NAIAS with the production car bowing at NY, so it's not beyond the realm of possibility that they'd use the MKZ as a springboard for the "personal luxury" idea.

Then again, maybe it's that long-rumored/-awaited/-debated C-segment Lincoln, though the price point sounds more like an MKX or MKS (that seems like a stupid-high price for a C-segment car, IMHO).

  14. Perhaps the folks at Ford need to spend more time monitoring the Mustang Forums to find out that this is in fact happening, . . . . a lot.

Why? There may be "a lot" of people on Mustang forums who (claim to) mod their V6 Mustangs, but I'd bet that they're a very small fraction of the hundreds of thousands of people who will buy a D37-powered Mustang over the model's run. Why does Ford need to drive up the prices on the Mustang for the rest of those owners to deal with a relatively few morons who apparently don't even have the most basic understanding of what it takes to increase performance safely?

  15. Also you guys keep pumping up the new MKZ ( a car only a few seen) like it will take the segment over, it won't, not based on a Fusion

The MKZ isn't based on the Fusion. They share the same platform, the Mazda6-derived CD3, but it's not accurate to say that the MKZ is based on the Fusion (or vice-versa). It'd be just as accurate to say the MKS is based on the Taurus, which is to say, not at all accurate.
