Stop calling Ford buyers sheeple and stop making outlandish claims about BEVs and autonomous vehicles that don’t match reality or you’re getting a long suspension.  Maybe permanent.  Enough is enough.

A so called "moderator" that can't handle reality, and who resorts to suspending members of this site who can.

Go ahead and grant me the permanent suspension you dream about, asshole. It would be an honor coming from you!

For example, Honda claims that 56% of CR-V and Accord are now hybrid.

“Currently, over 56% of U.S. sales of the Honda CR-V and Accord are hybrid-electric trims. More than one-quarter of Honda’s total U.S. sales are electrified models, marking the most hybrids ever sold by the brand. Honda expects Civic hybrid sales to represent more than 40% of Civic sales.”

Toyota is also on same path of replacing pure ICE vehicles with affordable HEV.

Both Honda and Toyota are well known for being laggards among legacy automakers in the ongoing transition to BEV. GM President Mark Reuss explained the dilemma with hybrids nowadays.

If I had a dollar more to invest, would I spend it on a hybrid? Or would I spend it on the answer that we all know is going to happen (BEV), and get there faster and better than anybody else?

GM, and Ford are much better off devoting their resources "on the answer that we all know is going to happen (BEV), and get there faster and better than anybody else". Or at least faster and better than legacy automakers from Japan, South Korea, and Europe.

The "Top New Jersey Democrat" mentioned in that article is State Senator Paul Sarlo. muffin1 clarified Sarlo's comments earlier in the thread (see below), which are opinions on Sarlo's part. I’m having difficulty understanding why they will be providing a better version of an American nameplate to Chinese and not the Americans.

Explorer has a much shorter history and less recognition in China compared to the U.S.

In China, Ford can't rely on sheeple customers choosing Explorer just based on the nameplate as they do in the U.S. market. Also, as bzcat mentioned on this site in other threads, Chinese new vehicle customers have higher standards.

I don't get why car propulsion is politicized. I mean, it was fun to make fun of a prius because they were lame, but what's not to like about the BEVs of today? They do everything better except range with a trailer and charge time.

Good points Captainp4. Some politics are inherent to the automotive industry in general due to the heavily regulated nature of that industry, as the topic of this thread suggests. But you are correct that advancement of vehicle propulsion type toward BEV shouldn't be politicized, because this is something in which governments and automakers have the same overall goal and should be on the same page.

"I don't like where this button is" is equally ranked with "car burst into flames exiting the dealer lot" - never has made sense to me.

CR's reliability survey doesn't consider design concerns like "I don't like where this button is" at all, though that may impact CR's owner satisfaction score for a particular vehicle (which is based on a separate survey, not the reliability survey). Additionally, problem areas for the reliability are not equally ranked - they are weighted as indicated in the FAQ. Consumer Reports' Car Reliability FAQ - Consumer Reports

Are All Problems Considered Equally Serious?
Engine major, engine cooling, transmission major, drive system, electric motor and EV battery problems are more likely to take a car out of service and to be more expensive to repair than the other problem areas. Consequently, we weight these areas more heavily in our calculations of model year overall reliability verdict. Problems such as broken trim and in-car electronics have a much smaller weight. Problems in any area can be an expense and a bother, though, so we report them all in the reliability history charts.

Ford F-150 Hybrid got a much worse than average reliability rating due to a relatively high frequency of serious problems in areas that are weighted more heavily in the survey.

Has anyone seen photos of the rear seat headroom with a regular sized adult sitting back there?  I've seen video of people getting in and out and it looks cramped, but it is hard to find actual photos of a tall adult sitting back there.  It's probably better than the Model Y's third row which is only fit for a child or small adult, but it seems like the raked shape would sacrifice rear seat headroom quite a bit.

Carwow's video at 6:38 is a good example of Cybertruck rear seat headroom with a regular sized adult sitting back there.

Ford has a stellar reputation for hybrid reliability, and truck reliability. The maverick hybrid is one of the most reliable trucks on sale.

The power-split hybrid powertrain in Maverick, Escape, and Corsair, which is based on the Aisin design Ford used in the original Escape Hybrid, has good reliability (average or better).

That system is completely different from the P2 hybrid powertrain in F-150 PowerBoost, Explorer Hybrid, and Aviator Grand Touring that's based on Ford's problem plagued 10R transmission (much worse than average).

    The United States of F-150

    https://media.ford.com/content/fordmedia/fna/us/en/news/2023/12/06/see-where-americans-reside-in-the-united-states-of-f-150.html

Here's a look at some notable states in the United States of F-150.

F-150 is part of F-Series, America's best-selling truck for 46 years. Utah loves that PowerBoost. Nevada loves Raptor. Idaho makes the ground shake with Tremor. Alaska goes for the max trailer tow packages. Florida buys the most 4x2s, while Vermont likes the 4x4. Whatever your needs, there’s an F-150 for you. F-Series is an American icon, and is powered by American ingenuity.

Which states buy the most F-150 Lightnings?

They qualified - they just weren’t able to provide test vehicles.

Thanks for the clarification. Here is what Motor Trend said.

Our October evaluations were too early to get our hands on the new Toyota Tacoma and the Tesla Cybertruck, and Rivian declined to send its newest, cheaper versions of the R1T. A couple hometown players also sat this one out. The Silverado EV won't be eligible to win our highest honors until Chevrolet expands sales from fleet buyers to consumers like you and me, and the redesigned Ford Ranger was waylaid by the UAW strike, which shut down the Michigan assembly plant where production was just beginning.

the thing is that the powerboost option is a no cost one on the F-150 now..which should helps sales, but don't think it will do much to increase profits

That's correct. Warranty claims Ford has to contend with for the P2 hybrid powertrain in that truck certainly won't help profitability. The high frequency of problems with that powertrain sank F-150 PowerBoost to the position of 3rd least reliable vehicle overall from any manufacturer in Consumer Reports' most recent survey.

  13. The Chevrolet Colorado Is the 2024 MotorTrend Truck of the Year

Note. 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV, 2024 Ford Ranger, 2024 Rivian R1T Dual Motor & Dual Motor Performance, 2024 Tesla Cybertruck, and 2024 Toyota Tacoma did not qualify for the 2024 competition.

This year, as in 2015, Chevrolet's Colorado once again outclasses its midsize rivals by a far greater margin than any of our heavy-duty or "supertruck" contenders did in their respective segments. Its strong value proposition, impressive off-road capability across the range—while remaining eminently livable day to day—tough good looks, strong feature content, and broad range of offerings spanning from sensible work truck to junior Baja 1000 star impressed us sufficiently to earn this Chevy fresh set of Calipers.

That is very interesting data.  Thanks for posting rperez817.

Any chance they have it broken down by EV brands being traded?  I assume that cars being traded would have been around at least a couple of years on average, which would make a large percentage of them be Tesla based on previous sales.  I also assume Tesla makes up the dominant “luxury” data which begs the question whether 70% loyalty is based on “Tesla” or on “luxury”?  Without data by brands it’s hard to say because Tesla has had such a major role in EV sales for years that it probably skews results.

Luxury BEVs probably also have greater range on average, charge faster, and may play role of 2nd or 3rd vehicle more often in wealthier families with home garages that facilitates charging, etc.  If you have more data by brand that helps explain this 50% vs 70% difference I’d love to see it.

You're welcome Rick73. Excellent point about the fuel type loyalty rate for luxury EV brands being heavily influenced by Tesla. It doesn't look like brand level data is available for free, but S&P Global Mobility's 27th Annual Loyalty awards press release mentioned these tidbits. S&P Global Mobility Recognizes General Motors as Top Manufacturer; Tesla as Top Make in its 27th Annual Automotive Loyalty Awards - Feb 27, 2023 (spglobal.com)

    • On top of its 'Overall Loyalty to Make' recognition, Tesla scored repeat wins for 'Highest Conquest Percentage' and "Alternative Powertrain Loyalty to Make.' The combination of an active return-to-market consumer base and majority share of BEV sales were contributors to Tesla's loyalty performance this year. However, the brand's resonance with ethnic consumers was a key driver in its recognition for loyalty improvement and diversity retention.
    • Mercedes-Benz, with the successful launch of the EQS, was recognized this year as the winner for 'Most Improved Alternative Powertrain Loyalty to Make' award, recognizing a brand's improvement in its ability to retain an owner to both the brand and either a BEV or hybrid powertrain.

I'm seeing/hearing about a lot of customers that tried EVs, and went right back. They weren't impressed, and I can't blame them. I've seen far more articles regarding range disappointment and inconsistent charging experiences than not.

S&P Global Mobility found that the loyalty to fuel type rate for EV (that is, an EV owner getting another EV including from another brand) among mainstream brands was 52.1% in July. Among luxury brands, the loyalty to fuel type rate was 72.6%.

The latter has hovered around 70% since Q1 2022.

    N.J. State Senator Paul Sarlo says it won't happen, to ambitious in its present form;

Thanks for sharing that news clip from New Jersey muffin1. It's very disappointing that Senator Sarlo thinks Advanced Clean Cars II is "too ambitious in its present form". CARB was deliberately conservative in setting the benchmarks and stated that year 2035 for 100% ZEV new light vehicle sales represented the "sweet spot" when factors such as automaker and supply chain readiness, infrastructure, etc. were taken into consideration.

Some elected officials, nonprofit organizations, and companies like Tesla criticized the Advanced Clean Cars II benchmarks as not being aggressive enough. California regulator sees 2035 EV mandate as 'sweet spot' | Reuters

"We had to be cognizant of where the automakers are, where the supply chains are, where the production facilities are," California Air Resources Board (CARB) chair Liane Randolph told Reuters in an interview during Climate Week, a summit that takes place alongside the U.N. General Assembly.

"I feel like we landed at the sweet spot."

California was not as aggressive as some environmental groups wanted, or Tesla (TSLA.O), which urged ending new gas-powered vehicles by 2030.
