Lookie what I got today:

Engine X - 4.6L V8, 300 Horsepower, 0-60 in 5.8 seconds with fuel economy of 17/22, base price

Engine Y - 5.0L V8, 370 Horsepower, 0-60 in 5.2 seconds with fuel economy of 17/23, $1000 more than X

Engine Z - 3.5L V6, Twin Turbo, 370 Horsepower, 0-60 in 5.2 seconds with fuel economy of 19/25, $1000 more than X,

Imagine if the engine of your choice was made outside of the U.S by the following Manufacturers. To what extent, if any, would that impact your consideration to buy another Mustang.

Jaguar

Land Rover

Mazda

Volvo

f you were in the market today to purchase another Mustang, how desirable would you find the following features?

20" wheels

Heated washer fluid

Independent rear suspension

Adaptive cruise control

Heated and cooled cupholders

Paddleshift on the steering wheel (allowing you to change gears from the steering wheel)

6 speed transmission

Rear video Camera

Rear park assist

Now assume each of these features are optional. If you were in the market today to purchase another Mustang, how desirable would you find these features at the given price?

20" wheels ($1,295)

Heated washer fluid ($25)

Independent rear suspension ($200)

Adaptive cruise control ($995)

Heated and cooled cupholders ($75)

Paddleshift on the steering wheel, allowing you to change gears from the steering wheel ($100)

6 speed transmission ($100)

Rear video Camera ($375)

Rear park assist ($250)

*How interested would you be in purchasing a Mustang with a retractable hardtop?

This is the second email survey I got from Ford...the other was on a future B-car

20inchers...TICK, paddle shift...on higher line version...TICK, backup sensors...TICK, heated wiper fluid...25 bux, only in inclement areas where people probably shouldn't be driving a 300 horse rear wheel drive Stang anyway...TICK.....rear cameras....tech for tech's sake...X. heated and cooled cup holders...X, IRS...ONLY if price is kept competitive, and in reality the current mustangs handling is beyond most drivers capabilities anyway, 6 speed...TICK TICK TICK, closer 5 ratios and a 6th speed OD for upping cafe ratings should have been on the car in the first place....Sounds like Ford wants to pimp out the Mustangs...keep it simple ford....

That is funny. It matches the sign I saw where they used Brian instead of Brain.

As for the Mustang survey, The cost of the IRS, 6 Speed and paddle shifters seem really reasonable.

No Mustang needs adaptive cruise, parking assist or a rear video camera. Save that stuff for a Cougar or Lincoln version. My preference would be for a real Cougar like some of the photoshops on this site. Load it up with the high tech stuff to justify a higher price.

from what I understand is IRS comes with a substantial weight penalty...worth it, i don't know, 200 bux doubt it 500 per car more like iT I would guess, as to keep weight in tack one need to utilize exotics like aluminum....trade offs remember....Mustang handles pretty damn good right now...

I know for a fact that there will be a retractable hardtop coming. A friend took the buyout and went to work for the company that will be making it. They were building the building to manufacture it when he left.

I also question that for weight cost benefits...The Mustang shouldn't stray too much from its roots, basic AFFORDABLE? horespower....people already bitch about it's heft

Yeah, because the GT weighs all of 90lbs more than the Nissan 350Z.

but just imagine if they could shave an additional 400 lbs.....my problem is surveys like this, and rumours of hardtops tell me focus is being lost and vehicles are being teched out just for techs sake...the LAST thing Ford should do is add additional garbage to the Mustang that inevitably add un-necessary flab...isn't each 100lbs equivilent to 10 horsepower?

Well, I don't think they can. What are you going to remove? I mean at the 'hundreds of pounds' level, you're basically talking about either expensive aluminum construction, or taking metal out of the frame. I don't think either option is do-able.

As for the retractable hard top: I wonder if that's in place of, or in conjunction with, the rag top. Neat thing about the Mustang is it's such a high volume specialty car. Ford may be able to do both. In either event, compromised performance due to Ford revisiting the '58 Skyliner will be a given, for those that want it, and the retractable hard top won't add a pound to the regular cars.....

perhaps in a low volume "Autocross" version or the like, lighter wheels, replace Cast iron parts with alum, composite hood, rear trunk lid, door panels remove power windows, little sound insulation...shaker systems subwoofers, put in some low weight recaros....400 IS wishful i know, but would be a rocket....

20" wheels ($1,295) NOT DESIREABLE OR NECESSARY FOR ME AT ALL: OVERPRICED!

Heated washer fluid ($25) I WOULD BUY THIS

Independent rear suspension ($200) ONLY $200.. WHAT HAS BEEN THE FREAKING HOLDUP! OFFER IT FOR THOSE WHO WANT IT.

Adaptive cruise control ($995) I DON"T NEED THIS

Heated and cooled cupholders ($75) YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME?

Paddleshift on the steering wheel, allowing you to change gears from the steering wheel ($100) I WOULD BUY THIS WITH THE 6-SPEED.

6 speed transmission ($100) THIS IS A BARGAIN.. WHERE IS IT ALREADY?

Rear video Camera ($375) DON'T NEED IT

Rear park assist ($250) I DON"T NEED IT BUT OFFER OT THOSE WHO WANT IT.

Ford should be bringing the Mustang up to available luxury options found on other vehicles.

A retractable hardtop on a Mustang? Why not spin it off into a Thunderbird luxury model or something Lincoln can sell? Everything they think of does not need to be on a Mustang. Offer a choice.. a different flavor of Ford. It can be on the same platform. Not everyone wants a Mustang.

I'll play the game too.

Engine X - 4.6L V8, 300 Horsepower, 0-60 in 5.8 seconds with fuel economy of 17/22, base price

Engine Y - 5.0L V8, 370 Horsepower, 0-60 in 5.2 seconds with fuel economy of 17/23, $1000 more than X

Engine Z - 3.5L V6, Twin Turbo, 370 Horsepower, 0-60 in 5.2 seconds with fuel economy of 19/25, $1000 more than X

I'd happily pay for either engine Y or Z, but would definately prefer the 5.0.

20" wheels ($1,295): No thank you. 18" rims are perfectly fine for me.

Heated washer fluid ($25): Definately would get this.

Independent rear suspension ($200): Definately yes.

Adaptive cruise control ($995): If I'm using the car to commute, then a definate yes.

Heated and cooled cupholders ($75): No thanks.

Paddleshift on the steering wheel, allowing you to change gears from the steering wheel ($100): If I got the automatic, then definate yes.

6 speed transmission ($100): If I got a manual, then definately.

Rear video Camera ($375): No thanks.

Rear park assist ($250) No thanks.

Retractable hardtop? If I got a Mustang convertible, I'd stick with the soft top.

All of the luxury options would be great on a Cougar, or a Lincoln, or even on a Thunderbird. A Mustang should be relatively affordable, good-looking, and performance-oriented. Ford can easily build a 4-place Thunderbird quad-coupe with all of those luxury options and a standard retractable hard-top in the 28k-40k range depending on options, motors, and such. I'd buy a car like that over a Mustang any day of the week.

Or you can make the whole freakin car smaller. The S197 looks like a land barge parked next to a fox body. I feel there's plenty of room inside those for what they are: 2+2 coupes. There's no need for the Mustang to be as large as it is now. There isn't supposed to be a useable back seat. You aren't supposed to be able to stretch out your legs straight ahead of you in the front seats. Ford made the car too damn big. THAT'S the problem. Shrink its proportions down a little on the next redesign and you'll have a lighter car again - without having to use fancy-shmancy exotic materials.

People are getting larger and larger...I'm glad they made the car so I can fit my 6'2 ass into it. Its worlds better then the old SN95, which had about the same interior space as my 86 Escort GT.

its not macho to force yourself into a car...I like the Sky and Solstice, but I said in one and I couldn't even fit my feet into the wheel wheels with the seat all the way back.

You people are completely missing the point. Starting with this generation, the Mustang's audience became much broader than before. Johnny Redneck in his 20's might only want a fast, cheap & lean Stang. Joe Cash in his 30's-50's wouldn't mind paying more for a fully loaded hi-po Stang with a hardtop and other goodies. These people couldn't care less about the Thunderbird or the Cougar. They've the cash and a "Mustang" is their modern cheap Porsche.

And get real already, no one gives a shit about Lincoln or Mercury (at least not now). You're kidding yourselves if you think someone would rather have a Cougar than a special edition Mustang like the Shelby, GT-H, etc. The Cougar nameplate doesn't have this "OMG INSTANT LEGEND/DESIRABILITY" status to it, even among Ford fans. If you think some of those options would make the Mustang a "luxury" car, then you might as well consider the new Malibu and Sebring as cars for the royalty. Luxury is far more than that these days.

I fail to see the complaints about interior room on the SN95. As far as driver room goes, it's really no more cramped than my Mazda6. Yes, headroom is a bit worse, but leg and shoulder space are about the same. It's not a car for everybody, and the more Ford tries to make it a car for everybody, the sooner it will become a car for nobody.
