Ford won't strike

Ha Ha Ha... my diabolical friend LONGBALL is back in town. The last time we debated, it was over the profit sharing payout of 2003-4 or 5...I really don't remember.

What I do remember is that your figures turned out to be correct, although you never did reveal the formula that enabled you to figure that out. I still stand here with egg on my face...... and I'm still just as "profit Sharing" misinformed as I ever was.

Unfortunately one thing that I argued about has been proven correct over the last couple of years.... and that is what a lousy president good ole' GW has been. :poke:

Welcome back.

The UAW made a good strategic decision in choosing GM first, Chrysler second, and Ford third. The idea is to keep the strangle hold around the companies throat, but not so tight as to actually kill the company. Right now the UAW has to let up a little to put some life back into the companies. GM hadn't turned quite as blue as Chrysler, and Ford may need some artificial respiration to get breathing again. There is no way that the UAW wanted to give GM as much as they are going to have to give Ford. And the companies will each benefit differently from different concessions. GM can talk about job security, Ford still has a bunch of plants to close and more buy outs to come. It would not surprise me to see Ford being allowed to not just idle plants, but to outright shut them down, and sell them off. There are a lot of things the UAW can conceded that won't cost labor a dime, that can save Ford a ton of money.

I think there will be another strike, probably for less than 10 days. Strategically, the UAW needs the strike to posture for the membership, and Ford could use a small reduction in inventory. Personally, I hope there isn't a strike. I think it does nothing but make the UAW look greedy to the car buying public.

Hopefully, the teamsters will back us also and not deliver their over inflated inventories. Then when they lay us off they will have to pay sub and unemployment. A well deserved vacation for the ones that have been busting their ass all summer. Anyway we will over come. Peace to all

It won't happen, and you don't want it to. The teamsters will only not cross a picket line, they will make scheduled deliveries of all the vehicles that are already off the premises! the reason I know this is because I worked for Cassens hauling cars out of the Toledo office the last time you guys negotiated! They were over building and stockpiling vehicles to avert an interruption of deliveries just as they do at every contract negotiation. We and other plants have been advised of scheduled down weeks, and many after weeks of maximum overtime! If the Teamsters didn't make the deliveries, at the time you return to work the manufacturers lots would be full and you would be lucky to be be working do to high inventories. If the respective manufacturers see a significant decline in inventories they will be motivated to soften their stance on negotiations but none of us can afford to lose a sale to our competitors due to lack of supply. You have to remember why they have inflated inventories in the first place, it is intentional! I do however agree to stand up and leave the choices to the companies, I can't even believe that GM workers ratified their tentative agreement I will stand hand in hand with my brothers Ford,Crystler, and GM! God Bless the working man!!!!!!!!!

They still would have deliver to the dealership's what product was already off of the Manufacturers' grounds. If you look at the actual reports and the Teamsters sight they said they will not cross the Pickett lines, not that they would shut down. They (the teamster companies, Cassens, Jack Cooper, Allied systems, Hadley, E&L, Leaseway, ect.ect.ect.) are still under contract to deliver. It is the Teamster's contract that the employee's are protected from refusing to cross a Pickett line! It does not protect the respective companies (carhaulers) from loss of contract with the manufacturers they service, due t such an action. I hope you guys know that the domestics are also trying to cut out the teamster carhaulers. The only thing that has protected them is that it carhauling is a specialized field of trucking, that along with the extra cost of a carhauler over that of a standard freight hauler! A standard freight truck costs $100,000 to $160,000 for truck and trailer, a carhauler costs $210,000 to $280,000! Fleetcar is a non-union carrier and one of the first to have enough trucks to haul one entire product, they do or at least did carry every Explorer built. They are one of the first non-union carcarriers to be awarded a new car contract. Ford is now waiting to employ enough non-union carcarriers to cut the teamsters out!
