Roadrunner
How much will this tow, because it sounds like an excellent vehicle for that purpose. Put a hitch on it. I should hope -- absolutely hope -- it can out-tow the Edge. Otherwise, why such a trucklike appearance? I'm thinking way ahead about a 2010 replacement for my dad's Explorer assuming he's still alive. The Panthers, unfortunately, are too much of an "old person's car" for him -- but I might buy one used as a winter car/towing vehicle if I'm up in heavy snow country. (Y'all have convinced me to praise the Vic). Then again, maybe I'll get the Explorer and, well there you go. TomServo92
I don't think towing will the be the Flex's forte'. It will be a people mover. If you need towing in a people mover, the Expedition is the answer.
BORG
I have the tow package on my MKX and it can pull 3,000 (I think that's what the figure was). I won't use it, but it's there
akirby
Isn't the 2008 Taurus X rated at 3500#? Wouldn't it be the same?
Sherminator98
Isn't the 2008 Taurus X rated at 3500#? Wouldn't it be the same? Or more depending on Curb weight and changes to the engine/transmission
oac bodyboy
I've seen one at the plant and I was told by one of our prototype people that it can tow 4000 pounds and saw it comes with a class III hitch.

focus05
This makes me curious. Is the Flex built on the update/reinforced D3 platform like the MKS? God, I hope it weighs less than I think it's going to weigh. That 3.5 is already pretty maxed in the AWD MKX - I can only imagine it in a much longer AWD Flex filled with six people and their stuff. Nope. The Flex platform and the MKS/new Taurus platform were both derived from the original D3 but the Flex was lengthened and widened before the MKS version was beefed up for the Twin Force engine. So they're probably just siblings that share the same parent platform but I don't think they're the same.

Huh? The 3.5L moves the AWD MKX and Edge pretty damn good...I drove a Edge and it has pretty good power, and thats coming from someone that drives a 06 Mustang GT every day. igor
The Flex will be rated at 4100lbs towing capacity.just like stated above. The Taurus X is rated at measly 2000lbs .. I think that piece is a factor of no "Tow package" like the Edge and Escape have - without the larger tranny cooler, they will not upgrade the rating .. sad really that a T-X can be out towed by an Escape Igor Edited October 29, 2007 by igor
theoldwizard
Isn't the 2008 Taurus X rated at 3500#? Wouldn't it be the same? No ! There is no trailer tow option on the Taurus X. The TT option on the Edge is basically a bigger radiator, a tranny cooler and a class I, II wiring harness (no electric brake connections). theoldwizard
... I'm thinking way ahead about a 2010 replacement for my dad's Explorer ... I'm kind of in the same boat, but I think I'll try to wait for the next generation Explorer, probably 2011 or 2012. It likely to have a chassis and powertrain very similar to today's Edge/Taurus X (unibody, V6, FWD/AWD).

LincolnFan
That's a pretty darn good pic of the Flex. Love the white. Back on topic, IIRC the Flex had over 4000 pounds towing rating in the concept form.

NickF1011
You better buy one quick before they turn it to a unitbody. Yes, since unit body SUV's are ENTIRELY incapable of towing anything. Oh wait...the unit body Grand Cherokee can tow up to 7400 lbs.

Whatever year is the last for the current Explorer, I will evaluate the one that I have. If I feel it will not last another 4 to 5 years, I will buy the last year. I don't want an Expedition with it's current engine offerings. Maybe when Ford gets it head out of it's rear and sells a hybrid like GM will have in December, but the current one is too big, too underpowered, and too thirsty for what it is, a stretched 3 row Explorer. The Expedition is big and thirsty, but it is far from underpowered. The 6 speed makes the 5.4 come to life.

I agree with SUV that I would not consider the 5.4l in the new Expy underpowered, but hey - it is not my purchasing decision - I currently live with some 230hp 4speed Expy (1999) so what do it know?
