RichardJensen
I like the Verve concepts. However, I don't like the Mondeo. Why? Because all the other B cars on the market in the US look like dishwashers. The Yaris, Aveo, Fit, Versa.. All of them are ill proportioned beasties. OTOH, the Verve looks like a normal car. Plus I really like the big grille on the Euro version. I am, however, not of the opinion that putting an exceptionally anonymous grille in a midsize sedan (e.g. the US Verve's grille) along with the other bland Mondeo elements will work. It is all fine and well for Farley and Horbury to talk about how 'international cars' will work, and how people 'shop the entire world on the internet'; but when push comes to shove, Ford buyers and Americans in general do not want Fords that look like European cars. At least not now. Sure; 21 years ago, it was all the rage with the Taurus, but now---sorry folks, it's not gonna work. You've been warned. And you are in serious danger of having your account here pulled. Either post something relevant to an actual car or take your problems elsewhere. Comprende? Local1111
In the USA people are getting taller due to global warming, so in the Red Verve they raised those door handles. If they were in the same location for N.A. as the blue model, you'd have a 5 yr/60K warranty for chiropractic service.
MarkFive
***the following post contains a minor criticism of something Ford did*** Does anyone know what they are going to call this car when it finally arrives as a production model? I don't like the name "Verve" and I particularly don't like the name "Fiesta."

There you have it folks, RJ predicts the Verve will flop. Apparently, it needs to be reskinned to look like a squished Fusion/FuckUs instead, because that's what americans like. And I've to disagree with you on the Yaris twins. They might look like shit, but right now, they're the only b cars in the US that are proportioned correctly. I agree on the rest, though, save for perhaps the Versa. That's the definition of function over style, it's a packaging masterpiece. Sure, it doesn't look like any other Ford sold in the US, but then again, it also happens to make the driver seem normal (as opposed to the assortment of clown cars in that segment). Therefore, I suggest you buy one as soon as possible. And the Yaris only looks good in photographs. I saw a three-door the other day and almost choked on my coffee it was so goofy looking. pcsario
The reason the Yaris looks goofy to you (other than the headlights) is because of its size. You're just too used to regular sized sedans. The Verve, being the size of a Fiesta, won't solve that problem. As a matter of fact, being reportedly lower without growing that much in lenght, I'm guessing you and others will be dissapointed as well when you see the production Verve on the streets, due to its size. To me, the outgoing Fiesta appears AND feels smaller than the Yaris, which looks more "like a normal car" due to its height and packaging. You said it yourself, you find the Yaris design relatively acceptable in pics. If you look at real life pics of the Verve, it won't look like the "normal" car you're picturing in your mind, especially with production wheels - just look at that last pic you posted. The Verve will look awkward to some from certain angles. That being said, your logic regarding the Mondeo/Verve is still flawed. The meat of the design is INSIDE its profile. MarkFive
Re: the Yaris. Its not the outside shape that bothers me, its the dashboard with the center-mounted gauges. I'm not sure I could get used to that. I hope the Verve accomodates tall people like my Focus. I'm 6'2" and if I fit behind the wheel, I'll seriously consider one when it comes out. The Verve, being the size of a Fiesta, won't solve that problem. As a matter of fact, being reportedly lower, I'm guessing you and others will be dissapointed as well when you see it on the streets. You said it yourself, you find the Yaris design relatively palatable in pics. If you look at real life pics of the Verve, it won't look as "natural" as you're thinking; it has its fair share of awkward angles too. sorry PC, I couldn't disagree more, the Verve has a subtle elegance and flow that the Yaris lacks COMPLETELY, in fact it looks like one of those toys that when you squeeze it the eyes do a Marty Feldman and pop out....its just plain ugly...irrespective of size
pcsario
I'm not saying the Yaris "looks as good" as the Verve. If you don't like the Yaris or S40 because they look "too small", you won't like the Verve, even if you adored it in pics.

If you don't like the Yaris or S40 because they look "too small", you won't like the Verve, even if you adored it in pics. I admit I like smaller cars, but then again I was not brought up in American society which in realility has come to REQUIRE larger sizes as a pre-requisite along with thinking size is safer...however I think we are in conjunction with gas prices and the constant televised "think Green" movement, all witnessing a not so gradual movement to "the Other Side".......and as far as the Yaris and Verve are concerned...the Verve proves that just because a car is small does not mean it can't be stylish..... MarkFive
as far as the Yaris and Verve are concerned...the Verve proves that just because a car is small does not mean it can't be stylish..... The Verve seems to have a cab-forward element in its design which I think contributes to the illusion about its size. As you stated, it does look pretty stylish for the class of vehicles it belongs to. I hope they price it right. In Montreal, a Yaris goes for the same price as a Focus. wildosvt
The Verve is THEE overall winner of NAIAS IMHO. And I hate small econo cars. If they change it much when in production, It will not fair as well, Again IMHO.

P71_CrownVic
Oh god. if they look like the Mondeo lights Ford is doomed, doomed I say. Hey, if the new Focus sells, Ford xB sells and the Lincoln MKFlex sells...Ford could put out a modern day Edsel and it would sell. The mondeo taillights arn't that bad. Have you seen the ones on the re-freshed F150, Milian, MKFusion? I think the best taillight setup Ford has is on the MKEdge. And the Verve taillights are very similar to the Mondeo. No, I don't think that's it, as I always thought the Geo Metros & Mercury Tracers (not the Escort knock-offs) were pretty elegantly designed little cracker boxes. The issue with the Yaris is everything from the A-pillar forward. It's the closest thing to a sheetmetal crustacean since the 2CV. RichardJensen
Agreed, Americans welcomed Kinetic design with open arms, unlike some people here predicted. Yeah. Because if they're at an auto show (and it's not even open to the public yet), they're representative of the public at large. There is, IMO, a pretty sizable perception gap between the auto enthusiast and the general public, especially when it comes to cars like the Mondeo. The problem I have with the Mondeo, as I've stated repeatedly, is not the quality of the design, but its suitability. It does not say "Ford" to me.
