DEARBORN, Mich., April 1, 2008 – Sales for Ford’s redesigned small car and acclaimed crossover utility continued to buck economic trends during March.

Retail sales for the Ford Focus were the highest for any month since August 2005 – with retail sales up 36 percent in March and 35 percent in the first quarter compared with the same periods a year ago.

The new Focus has helped Ford increase its share in the growing small car market and is attracting younger buyers. Compared with the previous model, buyers are equipping the Focus with more features, like SYNC, Ford’s exclusive, in-car connectivity technology that fully integrates most Bluetooth-enabled cell phones and MP3 players by voice activation.

Edge retail sales were up 35 percent in March and 52 percent in the first quarter, thanks in part to stronger sales on the coasts. The California region accounted for more than 10 percent of Edge sales in the first quarter of 2008, versus 7 percent in the first quarter 2007. First quarter retail sales on the west coast and Northeast more than doubled compared with a year ago.

This signals the growing appeal of the country’s best-selling crossover in 2007. During the first quarter of 2007, Edge’s introduction quarter, more than one-third of Edge retail sales came from the Great Lakes area. During the same period in 2008, this region drove only one-fourth of Edge sales.

“This reflects how much customers who haven’t traditionally even considered our products are starting to warm up to Ford and is just an indication of more to come,” said Jim Farley, Ford group vice president, Marketing and Communications. “We’re optimistic the new Ford Flex and Lincoln MKS will help increase consumers’ consideration for our brands beyond our traditional geographic regions of strength.”

In March, Ford, Lincoln and Mercury sales totaled 213,074, down 14 percent compared with a year ago. Sales to individual retail customers were 17 percent lower than a year ago, with essentially the entire decline concentrated among truck and sport utility vehicles. Sales to daily rental companies were down 13 percent versus a year ago, and total fleet sales, including daily rental, were down 9 percent.

“This is a very challenging external environment, reflecting a seismic shift in consumer preferences,” said Farley. “These conditions will likely persist in the near future. At Ford, we remain focused on executing our plan, which includes being profitable at lower volume and changed mix.

“It is crucial we continue to employ a disciplined process to gauge demand and plan production on a segment-by-segment and region-by-region basis,” said Farley.

Total Ford Motor Company sales, including Jaguar, Land Rover, and Volvo, totaled 227,143, down 14 percent.

Let me guess... Just as bad or a little worse?

Especially in Super Duty F-Series trucks. That's what I'm watching... Diesel is $4.00+ a gallon. Who can afford to buy one?

local dealer said he had his best month in a year.. new foci, fusion and edges flying off lots and not much in rebates moving them...

Hmm Sable sales nearly doubled, yet GM sales got cut in half

The Mustang is hurting, but avg of 10K cars a month equals out to 120k a year...nothing to sneeze at

Taurus outsold the CV again

Besides the Mustang, the thing that hurt Ford the most was trucks

And yet...the Panthers STILL outsold the D3 cars. :hysterical:

And look at that Mustang go...down, and down, and down.

Well, considering Ford's 2nd largest brand doesn't even have a D3 yet, it's no surprise. MKS will be the nail in the coffin of the Panther.

Mustang was down year-over-year, but higher than it was last month. The Panthers declined by FAR larger percentages.

:reading:

Everything coming out of Chicago (Taurus, Taurus X and Sable) outsold the Panthers (Crown Vic, Grand Marquis and Town Car).

no surprises here..fuel efficient cars are in vogue and will be for some time....new 09 f150 on line in a few months....i suspect 08 f150 sales will increase as substantial rebates appear on the 08's here shortly...mustang sales..well...stang is looking dated..wait till next year when chally and camaro is fully available..stang sales will be down until the 2010 model appears..may see a spike in stang sales then....id say not bad for ford...yes they need a killer midsize sedan as people switch from suv/vans to the modern station wagon type vehicles...ford definetly needs a well received taurus/sable to compete in this current environment...the down side....years of focusing on truck sales has finally caught up with ford....world changed...ford needs to be able to more readily change to world conditions

As for the Panthers remember production is being limited from here on out one shift only. By now I should hope all the left overs from 07 have been blown out at bargain prices. As long as they sell every one they build it is all good. Hope fully the new RWDs do not come to late to recapture the customers that migrated to other brands. Thy are going to have an up hill battle when released. Hope fully Ford does the right thing and consoldates the Panthers and D3's in the new full size RWD's.

The Focus was "supposed to flop", rememebr all the hand wringing by 'enthusiasts" demanding a C1 with AWD and turbo? Well, $4 gas changes the game!

Also, the car rags are dying in influence of buyer decisions. Car and Driver tested a new Focus and asked "What was Ford thinking?" and the answer is "to get more sales". Real word sales do not depend on 'car guys' or 'fan boys'.

Wow... really surprising to see 630land not claiming again that the Fusion is the 300's competitor, not the 500/Taurus.

Seems he finally got it.

LOL @ him crediting the rise in sales of the FuckUs to the redesign, though.

As if everyday C1's were gas hogs.

Well Hopefully their replacement is every bit as capable and durable. Time will tell.

As a side note we should see over all sales numbers of the panther about half of what they were in 2006 to match the reduced capactiy.

Wow TATA have already turned Jag round! :)

Actually one interesting point is that the XF has sold in 1 month twice as many XF's as they sold in an entire year with the S type. In fact the XF is doing incredibly well in what is possibly not a full month of sales. Add this to their global figures and in actual fact the XF was possibly Ford's top performing product when matched to sales targets for the model.....

So it looks like all Jag's problems were down to the S type which was styled by US consumer focus groups and the X type which according to I Callum was designed by Ford USA.

Jag's figures would be even better if you strip out the X type which Jag is axeing in the USA.

Shorter:

Flagship down 24%, total retail sales down 17% and "second quarter may be one of the most difficult periods facing the auto maker this year".

F-Series down 24%

I think we did well this month considering all the BS that the economists are throwing about. I work in retail and have not seen the slowdown that the gloom and doomers are preaching.

The second quarter will not be as bad as they say. Many on wall street say the financials have bottomed out and have nowhere to go but up. That should help the turn around in attitudes toward the economy.

mlhm5 may need to get laid! You have sooo much time on your hands to devote to something you hate and at the end of the day we don't care what you think. I just laugh that your pathetic life is so empty that all you can find to do is troll a ford fan board and try to raise hell.

It doesn't matter any more TStang because Ford makes a profit on every sale.

So long as Jaguar and Land Rover keep buying Ford supplied engines, that is.
