I think if you were in the Middle East and you were in Israel it would be OK to say Merry Chrristmas. (not "all of the Middle East")

Why are there no Christians in the Middle East?

There are millions

Christians

Merry Christmas

I don't see any subliminal message. :(

Read my Merry Christmas post...look carefully :-)

I didn't mean to start a war with this Merry Christmas thing. I was just trying to be a smart ass. I didn't expect to be taken seriously. I really believe that it is stupid to worry so much about it. I like Christmas. I was brought up Christian, but I can't swallow the biblical account.

Back on topic. The way I see it, if we went for the 4 month lay-off, the union would have lost over a million bucks in dues. If the company schedules two blackout weeks a month, each shift will work one week a month. So you would get one real paycheck a month with union dues taken off. I didn't attend the meeting, so maybe the company has given us some assurances in that regard that I am unaware of.

boy oh boy, you don't know how close to the truth you are with that comment and all the implications.

imagine this one:'keep your boys inline and we'll take care of you in the national when the need arises.nudge, nudge, wink, wink!

or this:'goddammit! i see seven jobs going away every time i see an import.hey, can we get those guys to unionize, imagine the dues we could get out of them!' ;)

How about this one....sorry dear junior can't go to the dentist or get new glasses because my benefits ran out due to my four month layoff!!!!

Don't be such a jackass. If you where at the meeting on the 18th, you would of heard all the arguements for and against a 4 month layoff. In the end the membership voted on what to do. Sounds like you're the kind to skip the meetings then complain about stuff later.

Look at your SUB cheque.... there is a spot for them to deduct Union dues. Don't worry....If we are out for 4 months the union will still get their money :D

Alliston and Cambridge love not paying Union dues and they have jobs. And incidently Alliston was reported to have built 354,500 vehicles at thier one site. The MDX, Pilot, Ridgeline and all the variations of the new model civic, which even though it has had numerous recalls is selling in record numbers.

Now no disrespect intended toward the union and I do fully support the good fight the union stands for but, Charly, you make it sound like unions and jobs are synonymous. That is quite the simpleminded view of our current hyper-competitive automotive industry.

I do not believe they can collect union dues if we do not work at all in a month. Going without dental plan for a few months would not be the end of the world. If little Johnny had a dental emergency, there is such a thing as paying for it out your own pocket.

Personally, I don't care which way we go. It makes little difference to me money wise; but it does seem to matter big time to the union. As mewhitey implied, I hope we don't have to pay for it later on.

You need to be able to discern the wheat from the chaff..many posters like to throw out inflammatory comments just to see if anyone will get excited by it.

Some do it through ignorance and others are just trolling to see if they can get anyone to respond.

I like to respond or post facts as I know them.......and when I don't know for sure I try to shut up and listen/read.

Happy New Year ;)

And you need to discern from reality and fantasy. The fact is auto industry jobs have been going the nonunion route the past 15 or so years. The only reason the CAW has been growing in membership is because they have been recruitting the service industry, you know the would you like fries with that shake sir, industry.

Charly I have one serious question for you and I think it is fundamental to the whole issue here. Why can't the union impress upon the transplants thier positive message?

Isn't this why everyone is worried about thier jobs? Arnt we all worried that our nieghbors dont even want to think about buying a union made car, even though union quality is basically at par with any non-union made car?

It seems as if the whole world is growing simply stupid and liking it.

Charly I have no idea why you insist upon telling everyone here that all Im doing is "trolling". Maybe you just simply have no answers to my serious questions, maybe name calling is all the defence you have to intelligent inquiry, maybe that creates a negative impression?

As someone who has collected SUB on and off for my entire Ford career, I can assure you that union dues do indeed come off every month, whether you worked a second that month or not. The deduction is based on what you are collecting from SUB alone, not your E.I. earnings. Think around the $35 mark a month. This is based on Local 200's contract, but as far as I know, we basically share the same contract. Your dental plan will continue for 1 month after the month you are layed off. Example, you are layed off Jan. 1, your dental is good untill Feb. 28. The rest of your medical coverage is good for 6 months. This is all layed out pretty well on our website cawlocal200.org. I think under the Layoff Updates page there is a jump about this.

Over Christmas I was at my inlaws. One relative was discussing the fact he will need a minivan sometime over the next year. There I was trying to convince them all that a Freestar, Freestyle, Focus wagon, or maybe a new Edge or Aviator would be a good choice. Helping me was that I know all the stats on most Ford vehicles in my head (price, performance, gas milage, etc.) Well all my arguing and trying to convince them fell on deaf ears. All they talked about was Honda, Toyota, Nissan and maybe Mazda. I mentioned all the 'silent' recalls on these imports, but to no avail. My wife is sure that with a few more drinks in me and I would have been showing them why some call me 'one punch Stu' :)

My father-inlaw was the only one (besides my wife) that agreed with me. He has always made it a point to buy NA autos as he lives in Windsor and owns a restaurant with many Chrysler and Ford customers (no Chrysler/Ford plant = no restaurant) plus he intelligently supports the local community as most business owners smartly do.

I'm doing a fairly good job at convincing my brother to buy a Mercury Grand Marquis over a Chrysler 300, especially since his work will pay and this helps defuse the argument of the Grand Marquis starting at over $10,000 over the 300/Charger.

I hear you, I usually try a softer approach these days. I've found any aggressive behavior on my part when in those conversations only perpetuates the negative image people have of a unionized worker. These days I try to argue by useing the quality numbers by CR and JDP which really just tell people how equal all cars are, then I hit them with the how much they can save $$$$$$ with X plan and any other incentives.

I mean there has been some good news coming out of those rags, like the 2002 Windstar winning over the odessey or seinna in long term durability, or the Focus being rated the highest initial quality compact, that means better then civic or corolla. Those facts with x plan and incentives make for compelling arguements when delivered calmly.

Wow! Lots of stuff going on here! First off I hope everyone had a great holiday, I know I did--the see food diet plan was in full effect--. On the topic of Union dues, to even post such a statement is irresponsible. Do you honestly think Honda or Toyota would be paying those people the same or even more than us if the UAW/CAW were not in operation? Surely NOT!!! The same holds true in every sector of the market where there is a unionized workforce performing the same functions....The cash and benefits are greater!! As far as trying to organize these outfits I honestly believe if they realized where they'd be if no unions ever existed IE. workin like a dog day in day out for next to nothing to show for it. Where do they think five day workweeks came from and some of the other advantages that everyone enjoys in their work places today?...How 'bout Union presedent?... It's that they don't want one it's just that they feel there is any reason to go to one....I think that'll change in the future with higher demands on the workforce and all. To bicker over whether or not you're gonna have union dues deducted each month is childish!! If you honestly are conserned over this go back and do some research and see what past Brothers and Sisters had to endure so you could have it as good as you do now and obviously take for granit (sp?). As far as the topic of getting your family/friends to buy NA, I too feel the pain but the best part---My buddy was hell bent on buying a Kia even though I could get him A-plan on a Ford, well need less to say he regrets it A LOT!! Doesn't like to admit it--His Kia is a piece of shit!!!. The hidden recall thingy is in full affect just look at Mitsibushi....Hiding recalled issues for over ten (10) years?!!! What the hell is that and to this day I still see dumbies driving them and bitching about all the "press" the NA automakers are getting. I had to post just to vent so that's it from me for a while Happy New Years!!! Talk to ya in 2006. ;)

The opinion of whether unions are good or bad was not the issue I was addressing. I am and have been a union member for a very, very long time. That is a fact of life. I have to live within the parameters that exist. With my seniority, for me, the union is a very good thing. I have paid my dues and am milking my seniority for all I can get out of it. I was not aware that union dues are collected from SUB, but still, that is less than if we worked; and Charly, I have respect for you, whoever you are, the question was addressed to you. My next post referred to swimming with the fishes, not sleeping with the fishes. I was just afraid you would tell me to go jump in a lake.

LOL, I have no problem with you or your questions., thats the reason the forums are here... As for who I am....my nickname is my real name...I don't particularly care for bogus identities...

Having said that, there are a few people that only wish to get people upset and promote bullshit, I try my best to not respond to trolling..

As far as a "deal" being out there, I certainly have no knowledge of it..but ask yourself this WHY would there be? what purpose would it serve?

;)

Happy NewYear
