OK you P71 experts, what are the known problem areas on the P71 to look for when shopping a used CV.

Years considered are 2003 or newer.

Some areas I've heard about: Frame, cracks & rust, (2003s) Wheels, bad welds, rust (2003s). Front end suspension ware (110K miles?). Fuel Pumps?

Anything else?

Thanks,

Unless involved in a major mva, out CV's never had rust or frame problems. Transmissions, steering problems, yes. Just plain lousey running condition due to excessive wear and tear, yes. you have no idea of the use of the vehicle as ours, like most LE use have the vehicles idling for a greater percentage than any oither type of vehicle. The newer style wheels were a problem when first released but that was corrected and we never had a problem with the wheels unless damaged through a hard hit in a pothole or curb.

The big things I am aware of on the 2003's are rear axle Seals/bearings. LCM failure, Steel wheel failure. I havent heard too much on the frames failing.

From reading over at it seems that 2004 is the best all around year. The wheels, axles and LCMs all seem to have been fixed and its before the '05 drive by wire(another first year headache.)

Remember if you do look at a 2003 P71 if the wheels have 7 oval holes it has not hadthe recall done. If it has 12 hole wheels the recall should have been done at some point.

If you intend to drive any distances, make sure your PI has cruise control - I suspect that many do not. Otherwise, they are easy and (relatively) inexpensive to repair, with good parts availability. Do not be surprised if the odometer does not display (a known, but repairable circuit board solder problem).
