Stugots
How many of you at local 228 have over 30 years seniority? How many of you with that seniority are worried about losing your job? I would venture to say not many. Why are so many elected officials and appointees of local 228 in the 30 year club? Yes you have all put in your time and helped pave the way for the next generation, but you haven't earned a free pass. Things aren't like they used to be and your experienced in the traditions of old. Congress called for the big three to replace their ceos, why have we the union not asked for the same from our ranks. The same old ideas and outdated practices aren't working. You are not bigger than ford and you're not bigger than the uaw. Surely you must know the best thing for your membership is retire with dignity and move on with your lives. It happens all the time in life. The once strong and proud become weak and jaded. Do what is right for the future of the uaw and ford.

A lot of people on this sight want to bash seniority, say retire, so they can hold leadership positions in our union .... The problem is, you wouldn't know what to do with it if you had it .... I understand though ... you know what you want ... Do you know the master agreement, the constitution, the local agreement we're working under???? How about our bylaws???? Do you know what happened even a short twenty years ago that could help us negoaciate a better agreement today??? Threads like this ... at their very best ... are just plain disrespectful .... SOLIDARITY No sir I do not claim to know the master agreement and bylaws and the like. Nor do I wish to seek or be appointed to any position. I choose to come to work on time everyday and do the work that makes the plant money. Then I go home and wonder" will I have a job tomorrow". However I am fairly certain that many of my brothers and sisters with less than 30 years do know the contract quite well. It is my humble opinion (and meant with no disrespect) that to ensure our future we must move forward with new ideas and new faces in leadership positions. One can never forget the past, there is much to learn from history. But it is just that...history. Even Michael Jordan knew when he became part of history and then he retired. Ford motor company is my future. Its time for the past to be put in the past.

Maybe if you took the time to read our agreement, you wouldn't be so worried about losing your job. Maybe you would understand how well protected your job is.... If you took the time to even look around Sterling you'd see that we have brothers and sisters who call Sterling home who came from Chesterfield, Wixom, AAI, Rouge, etc. ..... They all came to Sterling in line with their seniority .... If the big three fold, it won't matter if you have a day or fifty years, right? We're all out of a job. But the fact of the matter is, as long as the doors are open at Ford, our jobs and our rights are protected by our seniority and our collective bargaining agreement. ..... So to that end I would say this ... If every person at Sterling who has more than thirty retired today, you'd gain nothing. It wouldn't add a minute of time to your seniority, so if the doors closed at Sterling, what would you have gained by asking everyone with thirty years to retire??? As for our appointed reps., I believe there are more with less than twenty years than there are with thirty. As for those who are elected in our local leadership .... we all voted them in. As far as I'm concerned, it is about a mile beyond unreasonable to ask anyone to retire from their job that they've shown up for every day for thirty years or more, so people like you won't have to worry about if your job is going to be there tomorrow, because you'll just find something else to worry about... GenX
Think of the big picture, I don’t want to say most, but a lot of the new generation of Auto workers are college educated, and more than capable of running things much smother in our unions. Sadly we are losing these hard working, educated, fair, unbiased people because of their seniority . We are left of with aging population in our plants that can’t keep up with the demand of the “world competition” . We can’t recruit talents from the outside for our unions, we have to harvest them from the young pool of people that we have ,before it’s too late . Think of the big picture What makes you think a college education trumps experence. I know alot of college degree people who are some of the most closed minded people you would ever want to meet. They think that they are so much smarter than everyone else. The people with 30 plus years have gone thru the same thing that the lower seniority are going thru now. This is a down turn and when you're at the bottom you have to take your lumps. As you get seniority you will start felling different. Or caring for an elderly parent(s). Also, that person w/ 30 yrs. might've been thru some layoffs, too. It's not always cut & dried when to retire. Stugots
Very defensive. I did not vote for most of the current leadership. I don't complain about mundane trivial things. Uaw contract aside the right to work for senior citizens is gauranteed by the U.S. Constitution. I agree with and support that right. My point is if one claims SOLIDARITY through and through one should be accepting of the FACT it is not in the best interest of U.A.W. Membership or Ford motor company to continue business as usual. The future of Ford is already written in the contract you negotiated. The future will be a set percentage of 2nd tier employees. It is in Fords best interest to get to that percentage. They will get there by either retirements or layoffs. The future of Ford is written in the news papers. As we lose jobs and close plants in america money is being invested in mexico and other foriegn countries. They didn't build that wall on the border to keep mexican citizens out of America, they built it to keep us away from our jobs. This is going on under the leadership of today. Who will step up to stop these atrocities?
psychodaveone
I only have 20 years seniority, and i'm not old YET.....but i see young people at my plant who are worthless.....and are holding us back. I also see some 60 years old guys working on the LINE who can work some of the young punks under the table. Most of the older guys who slowed down had the cleanup jobs. When these were eliminated most of those took buyouts and retired. We have 30 year seniority people who are only 48-50 years old. Should they retire? Idon't see why. Let's not make blanket statements please.

Then you say, what we need is new faces and ideas .... Now you say you support the right of senior citizens to work.... How is it that you can't understand that we are where we are, not because of our great union, but because of poor managers and CEO's, the worst president our country has ever had for the last eight years, who by the way has been hell bent on changing all the labor laws and supporting union busting where ever he could, and a hand picked CEO from Boeing who just got done busting the aircraft mechanics union. What OUR UAW is responsible for is the fact that we still have a job to go to brother.... All the jobs would be gone by now if it wasn't for our union... The problem isn't that we make too much money or have too many benefits.... The problem is that everyone else doesn't make enough money or benefits.... I believe that our new president Obama will support legislation to bring our jobs back to the USA and I believe that from Ron Gettlefinger on down will continue to look out for us and protect our jobs and advance the cause of organized labor..... Have a little faith.... SOLIDARITY Edited January 22, 2009 by unionguy963
