Cougar II The Car Ford Should Have Built

Recommended Posts

The Cougar II was rather hastily built on a Cobra chassis and had a cramped seating position. It also looked a lot (IMO) like the Corvette Stingray. I drooled over it back then anyway. Anyone remember the first Cougar concept car of the early 60s? It had gull-wing doors and was more of a cruiser than a sports car. It appeared in several scenes in the movie "Under The Yum-Yum Tree" with Jack Lemon.

I have a model of that tucked away in some boxes. I've had the model since the early/mid '70s. They forgot to mention the rear panel that opens automatically to relieve inside pressure if the side windows are opened at speed.

I like this bit:

It could be engineered for speeds in the 170 mph range.

At anything approaching 170 MPH, that thing would go ballistic. :)

Had a model of it when I was little. I don't think I ever got it together: it was the kind that had turning front wheels linked to the steering wheel, working suspension at all four corners, opening doors, folding seats, etc. I wasn't quite at that level yet. I believe I turned about half the parts (and my fingers and clothes ... and at least one of my nostrils) into a sticky toluene mass in a couple of hours.
