Ford Jellymoulds
DEARBORN, Mich., June 2, 2009 – New products helped Ford Motor Company achieve its highest market share in three years, even as Ford decreased incentive spending in May. Ford, Lincoln and Mercury sales totaled 155,954, up 20 percent versus April and the highest sales for any month since July 2008. Sales of the Ford Fusion were 19,786, Ford Flex sales were 4,305 and sales of the company's hybrid vehicles totaled 3,906 – setting three new sales records. In addition, Lincoln's new sedans, the MKZ and MKS, helped the luxury brand post a 2 percent sales increase. "Consideration for our new products is increasing," said Ken Czubay, Ford vice president, Sales and Marketing. "Even as the competitive environment intensifies, Ford's relentless pursuit of quality, fuel efficiency, smart technology and appealing designs is winning new customers." The previous Fusion record was set last month with 18,321 cars when Fusion cracked the foreign stranglehold on the mid-size sedan market. It was the first time since July 2002 that a domestic car was one of the top three mid-size cars selling to retail customers. Recent independent studies rate Fusion and the Mercury Milan as having the best predicted reliability among all mid-size sedans. In addition, both models are rated the most fuel-efficient sedans in America. Lincoln was one of the few brands in the U.S. to achieve a sales increase in May. Lincoln sales totaled 8,566, up 2 percent versus a year ago. Lincoln's sedans, the all-new MKS, redesigned MKZ and venerable Town Car paced Lincoln's sales increase. A new Lincoln full-size crossover, the MKT, will debut later this year. Combined sales for the Fusion and Milan hybrids and the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner hybrids totaled 3,906 – a new company record for hybrid sales in a single month. The previous record was set in April 2006, with 3,420 hybrids. The previous Flex record also was set last month with 3,190 vehicles. Combined sales for all crossover utilities were 35,582, Ford's strongest crossover sales month since last May. May marked the first full sales month of the 2010 Ford Mustang. Mustang sales totaled 8,812, the highest sales month since last July. This year marks the 45th anniversary of America's legendary pony car. http://media.ford.com/images/10031/May09sales.pdf Edited June 3, 2009 by staff
TomServo92
All in all, good news. It'll be interesting to see what the rest of the industry does. Edited June 2, 2009 by TomServo92
NickF1011
Overall, a very impressive month for Ford! :happy feet: Fusion, Focus and Mustang looked pretty solid, and Flex is really starting to grab a hold in the market it appears. And go Lincoln! I have the feeling these numbers are going to absolutely crush some of Ford's competitors.
suv_guy_19
Go Lincoln...but MKS ouch. One other thing I noticed. The combination of reduced budgets and a move away from Ford ambulances really seems to have hurt the E - Serioes.

TomServo92
I just noticed the Volvo S60 posted a 9% increase? What's up with that? Incentives?
Bigbuck15
Pretty good month the Flex is finally picking up in sales, fusion did great and the MKZ did real good.

soupy
VERY ENCOURAGING to see new Fusion and Flex sales! Can't wait to see new Taurus launch/sales! That should clean up those lousy results. Now lets broom Volvo on the Way Forward! What was retail market share? Up?
NickF1011
Oh, and those inventory numbers are excellent. Yeah, that has got to be one place where Ford has it all over GM and Chrysler right now. Their inventory levels, at least as of last month, looked terrible. I doubt they have improved much this month, despite them both being shut down for much of it. TomServo92
Not difficult to increase from almost nothing. When you pretty much see double-digit declines in everything else, a near double-digit increase stands out. I'm curious what's driving it. soupy
They're probably assuming for now - I think they have to wait for others to release sales numbers, don't they? Makes sense. Reread article and saw highest market share in three years.
NickF1011
They're probably assuming for now - I think they have to wait for others to release sales numbers, don't they? I would venture to guess that the automakers all have a pretty solid idea of how all their competition is doing from month to month.
shllshck
Go Lincoln...but MKS ouch. I'm not so worried about the MKS. Take a look at how it stacks up compared to the others in its class. These are the sales figures from April 2009. BMW 5 series - 4319 MB E class - 1795 Lincoln MKS - 1178 Cadillac STS - 711 Volvo S80 - 681 Lexus GS - 468 Infinti M35/45 - 441 Audi A6 - 388 Acura RL - 202 Basically the BMW 5 series has quite the stranglehold on the segment. The MKS in April handily out sold all but the 5 series and E-class, and that's probably how the segment will stack up. BMW/MB 1/2 and everyone else fighting for the scraps. Heck, the MKS outsold the Lexus GS, Infiniti M, and Acura RL combined! Let's see how the mid-sized luxury shapes up for May after everyone has posted their sales numbers. mettech
Goddamn imports. It is the best mid size car on he market. :reading: What happen to Focus? Town Car??? Town Car!!!!!! :happy feet: That will make Nick happy.....
shllshck
This just in. American Honda Motor Co., Inc., posted May total vehicle sales of 98,344, a decline of 39.2 percent compared to all-time record-setting May 2008 results. Year-to-date sales of 430,358 represent a 33.3 percent decrease on a daily-selling-rate basis* compared to last year. Honda Division posted May sales of 88,875, a decline of 39.7 percent versus May 2008. The all-new Insight hybrid posted sales of 2,780, helping drive an increase in total Honda hybrid sales of 7.5 percent. "May of 2008 was the best month ever for American Honda, as consumers sought fuel-efficient cars in record numbers," said John Mendel, executive vice president of sales for American Honda. "Staying true to the course of providing fuel- efficient, high-quality, fun-to-drive vehicles will hopefully help see us through to the economic recovery." Honda total car sales decreased by 48.9 percent to 51,947. Honda light truck sales saw a decrease of 19.4 percent to 36,928. The Acura Division posted sales of 9,469, a decrease of 34.0 percent compared to May 2008. The TL sedan was the division's top seller, with 3,375 units sold. *The daily selling rate is calculated with 26 days for May 2009 and 27 days for May 2008. The year-to-date daily selling rate is calculated with 127 days for 2009 and 129 days for 2008. All percentages reflect the daily selling rate. Looks like Ford kicked Honda's arse really good in May! Wow. Fusion within striking range (sales) of the Honda Accord. Nice! Honda calculates DSR numbers so the straight monthly sales change is actually -41.5%. Compare that to Ford's monthly -24.2%. RichardJensen
Last May was one of the gigantic months for Honda, where they capitalized on $4 gas. 53k Civics!!! 43k Accords!! Those numbers weren't sustainable no matter how you sliced it (ditto last May's Focus numbers)
focus05
Awesome inventory numbers... that's the best part of the release. Q2 should look fairly nice. I don't think Ford will get a profit, but they probably won't lose much. Q3 will look ok - Ford's going to have some competitive problems as GM/Chrysler sell down inventories out of bankruptcy and Toyota tries to stablize its inventories a little and does some attack of fleet sales with plants back up and model years changing over. Q4 will be a telling quarter for Ford. GM and Chrysler will have left bankruptcy behind and the effects of govt intervention will be more apparent (there may be none). Ford will have some serious product deficiencies: Escape, Edge and Focus are three volume products that are going to have problems as more new vehicles are released. Ford will have to compete with pricing - and if they don't, they will cede significant marketshare. All three get solved in 2010 and 2011, but that can be an eternity in terms of brand maintenance with regards to pricing, sales and fleeting. Sixt9coug
Still... 18K Fusions to 22K Accords? Thats slicing it pretty close. Im sure its not sustainable either (09 model blowouts and new '10 intro) but still cool to see it get that close.

Looks like Ford kicked Honda's arse really good in May! Wow. Fusion within striking range (sales) of the Honda Accord. Nice! The May sales rate of the Fusion/Milan/MKZ puts them at 308K on an annual basis. Which is real close to capacity when you consider that about 12K are exported to South America each year. I imagine there is still considerable 2009 units in this months numbers but in spite of that it is apparent that later in the year when the market heats up the triplets will experience demand that outstrips supply. Has anyone heard anything about a line producing Fusions at Louisville or Flat Rock?
theoldwizard
Could a profit not be too far away? Man, what Kool-Aid are you drinking. Don't get me wrong, I want to see Ford succeed as much as the next guy, but when your YTD sales are down 36% profitability is a long way away. The industry will be lucky if it sells 9 million units this year. Sales need to be over 10.5 million units for Ford (or anyone) to make a profit ! These are the sales figures from April 2009... A sell is a sell is a sell. But I don't think you can just post other sales numbers and say "look". How do you qualify the MKS to be in those other vehicles same class? Is it based on price?
suv_guy_19
If he compared it to the larger cars, it would probably fair even better.
