Ranger4.0
490,000 might seem like alot, but I believe it, assuming the OP didn't drive the car hard, and did regular maintenance, and alot of freeway driving. I know my current ride has about 80,000 on it, and I just do oil changes (Mobil 1) and routine maintenance, like changing filters and such, and it runs and drives better than the day I bought it. Of course, mine is a GMC, just a pickup, regular cab, 2WD, and the bigger 5.3 engine...So, A, there's alot less to go wrong, and B, the engine isn't working very hard to get the truck (significantly lighter than an F150) moving, so I expect alot more trouble-free miles from it. matthewq4b
No. I can believe that much mileage on a vehicle. I do not believe his claims of the minimal maintenance involved. Especially on an engine with head gasket problems. Not to mention alternators, water pumps, fuel pumps, and belts etc that never go that long. The water pump on my GM went at over 500K miles (front bearing failure) the alt went at 420k front bearing and brushes (I rebuilt the alt new bearings and brushes) Fuel pump was changed out at 420k as well due to lower than spec'd pressure not cause it quit working. So it is not unfeasable to do it. And not all 3.8's popped thier head gaskets it was prbolem with them no question but not every single one did it. The best I got out of serpentine belt was a 250K miles and then is shredded it's self but it was not a factory belt but a goodyear gator back by far the best serpintine belts on the market. The old 79 CV only ever got 2 belts in it's life time and that car had over 500k miles on it before it was retired. The excursion has 100 k miles and the orginal belt and still looks a good as the day it was put on at the factory. Hyway driving makes all the difference in the world constant engine RPM's and little to no loading and unlaoding of the engine. Serpetine Drive belts in stationary applications regulalry last the equivelent milage and longer 490,000K of mostly hyway miles is about equivelent to a years worth of continual operation And sepentine belts often go 2 to 4 years before needing replacement in continous stantionary applications, Heat, heavy loading, Belt length , frequnet loading and unlaoding really shortens the life span of drive belts. So it possible to get 490K Miles out of a Serpentine belt in a vehicle yes it is but only under the right conditions would it be possible. atomaro
Just post a pic of your odometer and/or any other receipts with mileage! Evidence is King! Absolutely. Everyone on the Internet has half million vehicles with no maintenance. Several people have posted that they have them...I have seen 0 proof. Those ultra rare vehicles make up less than 1% of all vehicles on the road today...but make up over 90% of all cars owned by people on the Internet. You were the only one arguing about it, and as I said that is not the first time I have posted that pic to BON either. And it is not the first time some of the posters in this topic have seen it either. I still have the car it sits out beside the garage and I make sure to fire it up every couple months. Eventually the drive line is going to end up in a late 60's Galaxie. The car was one of the first off the line for the 92 model year being built in Dec of 1990. All I ask is you back up a claim, in this case it's right in front of you.

Matthew Mathew, When you get around to taking the driveline out of that car, SAVE the body and frame. Any demo derbiers in your area will give you good money for them; Alot more than the scrapper will. If there aren't any derbiers in your particular area, put it on craigslist or Ebay...If you list it, they will come.

Roadrunner
See, from reading through this thread this is what I thought would happen. Give the guy a break. He's proud of his high-mileage Mustang, has put in basic maintenance, and seems happy. I believe his mileage number, your results may vary. The only advice is taking a look at your serpentine belt just in case. Traditionally we changed ours every four to five years on the Oldsmobile. Reminds me that I need to check mine tomorrow, and the air pressure...

I have run up some high mileage on base trim vehicles with some components showing no wear after excessive mileage. that being said, if you want Ford to recognize you, write a letter to the office of Alan Mulally with photos of your odometer. I'm sure he would be happy to see it. But please have someone else write the letter for you. I mean this is a very nice, helpful way. Not slamming or flaming at all.
