An Open Letter to Mark Fields

Recommended Posts

Why have you misled us? Why will you not come on this forum and address us and our concerns? Are you afraid of the people who think for themselves, and demand an explanation for the HELL you have wrought? The newspapers have told us that your "Way Forward", cryptic, asinine plan is INADEQUATE. They are correct!! As is the stock market. Stop this inept garbage about turning the company around to profitability!! Your plan is not working!!!!!!! It has been said that " the easiest way to make a small fortune in this industry is to start with a LARGE FORTUNE!" You have succeeded at this in spades. GM stock increases by the hour, our stock goes down as if a engine block were tied to it and it were thrown into the ocean. Are you bent upon the profit margin that allows foreign workers to garner our jobs for pennies on the dollar for a better bottom line? We all know the answer to this, even if you will not admit it !!!!!!!!! I do not know what your mother and father instilled in you as a child, as far as values and truthfulness are concerned, but I know this: You have lied to us, and you have twisted figures about our "Global Influence as a company" to the point that olympic gymnasts would get the bends just thinking about what you have done to this company in the name of "North American Profitability" . I will challenge you for the nth time: Give us, any of us, an audience with you and your self bestowed nobility!! GROW A SET!!!!!!!! Come off of the IVORY TOWER and tell us face to face that YOU HAVE FAILED!!!! It is obvious to even the blind that YOU ARE OUT OF YOUR ELEMENT!! You have said and I quote: " We do not pay attention to the competition". I guess you do not, when all jobs will be offshore in ten years. NOW, CALL ME A LIAR. I realize that that we have to be competetive on a global level, and I also know that we must adapt to changing economic structures in our time. But when you stand on the floor of The United States Congress and plead for "an even playing field" as far as trade is concerned, while knowing that you have planned to sell us out, well, that is know to us a pure debauchery and underhandedness. You may think that us "dumb bluecollars" do not understand the total ramifications of your duties within FoMoCo. If you believe this, you are delusional. We know that you are giving your best effort to destroy the American Dream, and America in general, to forward (sorry for that reference) your desire to be on the mountaintop. Or, is this all a part of a sinister plan to create animosity between us to allow our own self destruction that will allow you to make the bucks with little opposition? I wonder. We are far more perceptive than you think we are. We are also very dangerous when we have to be. Do not push us to the point that we will all rise up against you. Sorry, TOO DAMN LATE FOR THAT!!!!! Come forth Mark, while you still can. The people in Palm Beach need some used cars, why don't you embrace your true calling, and leave the business to someone a damn sight more qualified than you? If you doubt me on this, I can only say one thing: $6,40 per share. Stellar performance Mark.

You still don't get it do you? what does it take for you to get it to your thick head? Mark (scammer) Field is nothing but a "Freakin" good used cars saleman. You think Jack (the knife) was bad, wait another 5 years and see what Mark will do to FORD. Get a clue.

I don't think his criticism of him is flawed at all, and he is messing things up but we haven't seen it all yet. If Ford or any other corporation really had America in mind and not thier own pockets the "us vs. them" mentality would not be growing like the plauge today. No matter what you think Mark and Bill are doing the same as others when it comes to "padding" the pockets of Ford Motor Co. Steel, Textiles, Electronics, on and on have been through what the auto industry is going through. Ours is with a twist, we have imports built here while American companies are trying to leave. I have yet to see any import co. come here to make anything else to sell here on my list, tell me if I'm wrong.

The part that I still have trouble with is the real reason Ford isn't selling autos in the numbers like before. It isn't style or quality, it is the confidence to take control of the situation and make it work FOR you. Currently no one in the world see Ford with that confidence from the customer to wall street to the hourly workforce. Hence poor stock prices, customers going to other makers and a workforce on the verge of going postal. That confidence has to come from the top and I'm sorry but Mark and Bill just DON'T have it, never will. When Lee Iacocca turned Chylser around he brought with him that confidence and the American public seen it, believed it, and bought it, because HE was a leader not a follower.

I have to agree with Slingger and others; Fields is not the man for the job. His picture appears in more magazine articles and newspapers than a supermodel. In my opinion, he is all about smoke and mirrors.

Some questions to ask Fields:

1) Where is the new RWD platform to compete with the 300/Charger?

2) What are you doing in terms of showroom-drawing niche cars such as the Dodge Viper?

3) What are you doing in terms of crossovers in the leauge of the PT Crusier/Jeep Patriot and Compass/Caliber and HHR?

4) Why did you kill off the Lincoln flagship when it is a division already solved for product?

5) What can you do to assure us that the upcoming Fairlane will be adequete enough to gain market share in the still lucrative minivan segment?

6) How can you call a new front end for the 1998 500/Montego and Focus "bold moves"?

7) Why does it take you upwards of three plus years to bring eye-popping product to market when it takes Nissan and Honda less than two?

Folks I know involved with the "Way Forward" plan state that it is nothing but an exercise in cost cutting, layoffs, and plant closings. I truly hope that I am wrong, but all things being equal, I see this company in bankruptcy by the end of the decade under this "leadership."

I agree and disagree. Mark Fields did come into a mess. He has so many fences to mend that were broken by other leaders. If he truely has the power to change things, now is the time to do it. GM must be doing something right when Nissan and Renault wants a majority stake in the company. GM stock shot up $2.59 in one day. GM's stock has shot up almost $10.00 in 2 months. GM is doing something right, Ford is just watching. Could it be GM's company wide buyouts? I think so!

At the same time, 'Bold Moves' isnt 'Zoom Zoom'. Paying the American Idol winner to sing 3 lines of a jingle wont sell cars. Silly commercials about kids skate boarding or one legged soccer players wont do it either. Put the product on the TV screen, tell the MPG and the price with incentives. Give 0% financing and boost the warranty to 6yr/60,000 miles <----"Bold Move". Chrysler did it, look what happened to them, millions of mini-vans sold. Ford needs to be sponsoring more noticable sporting events. Boxing, UFC, WWE(F) wrestling PPV's all have video game and fast food/candy company sponsors, they need auto sponsors like Ford.

The car that needs redisigned the most is the 500/Montego. Sorry, great idea, but the design is for my grandpa, not my dad or me. Older folks lean toward Mercury or Buick for cars and the Montego just isnt the design older folks want. Older folks like long, wide cars. Give the 500/Montego a facelift. Chrysler did it with the 300, they made it a meaner power machine, muscle car that the 25-45 yr olds now want.

The Focus just needs minor tweeking to show that the car hasnt been pushed to the back burner.

Mark Fields, if you have the power, use it.

I am not yelling in this post, so I would appreciate if none of the responses yell back at me.

First, you criticize Ford for being a for-profit comapny? They have one goal in their mind (as they should) - the good of the company over long term. They are not the government or charity or a non-profit company. Toyota sure as hell does not do anything that does not benefit them. Transplant plants? - sure in the south with no unions. Hybrids - great move for PR and CAFE... I do not understand how Ford is supposed to be fighting companies that have only their own good on their mind with anything else but the same matching attitude. Even the extent to which Billy Ford is pushing on the green note and the fair labor practices gets criticised since Ford does not have any extra money to pay anyone a dime more than they need to.

Second, all the expectations of Fields' actions by now are simply ridiculous, because it is too early. Fields came in with two goals: 1) finally stop developing pure American cars on completely separate (read expensive) engineering, and start using the usually superior global FoMoCo platforms. 2) when using those platforms, develop a high quality class leader vehicles that will not be simply in the middle, "also ran"s, but will be the benchmark.

This is not just speculation - it was reported that Fields cancelled or postponed several programs. We were supposed to get a mediocre Fiesta and Bronco on the LAST/OLD Fiesta platorm. He cancelled that and we will get class-leading Fiesta and Bronco on the new global B1 platform. We were supposed to be happy with restyled C170 Focus untill at least 2012. Fields scrapped that - we will still pprobably have a redesign next year, but MkIII all new, globaly reunited Focus is coming in 2009, on the brand new C2 platform. How do I know that these vehicles will be class leading? Because Ford of Europe and Mazda are on the project. For those two to fumble with the C and B segment would be as disastrous as for Ford od North America crewing up the F-series truck - these are their bread and butter vehicles.

Sure there is nothing on the lot to show for this, but engineering on the global scheme has one problem - if you coming in late, you need to adjust your schedule to their schedule. These are massive projects and they will not simply change it because you (Ford NA) feels that way... we need to wait to 2008-2009 for both of these cars.

Now what I am simply saying is most of the work of Mark Fields is behind the scenes at this point. He put in place a new development process that will not only unite global developments (and bring them to North America), but will bring products to place in 18 months instead of 24. He revamped the proving grounds, to make parts of them identical to those in Europe and Arizona, so engineers, regardless of location can compare data.

He changed corporate mindset to designers, encouraging them to take risks and propose new things so the products stand out - we all know this was not the case - now it is (especially with Horbury and Calum in place). He worked with marketing and developed new brand images - Ford -BoldMoves Mercury - Metro Cool and Lincoln - Reach Higher / American dreams. Like them or not, these are them, and Ford NA now even has a "Brand DNA" department, that has the power to stand up to Fields or Horbury and say "this does not fit the brand image, you need to keep in mind the image we set for the brand and make this vehicle more ..... - the purpose is that over time people do not forget the brand definitions set for each brand, so the three brand can continue on with clear diferentiation.

Now I understand the rest of the sentiment abouth Fields - he comes in with perfect hair, designer outfits, smiling big to cameras, and with smiles cuts plants, plans to lay off thousands of people, and while being upbeat about the company has no new products to show for it. The simple truth is - it is too early to tell how his team can manage the company. Fields himself was put in place in November; his team was not ready and in charge of the shop until January - March. and using their own data - it takes minimum of 18 months to develop new vehicles - they barely got a third of it at this point.

Ever since Fields was put in place and announced the way foward, my personal evaluation strategy was "leave the judgement open untill summer 2008" - if by then they do not have new products released or just about to be released, they are worthless - untill then, in my view one cannot expect new products from them, because they took over a company that was about to prodduce crapy Cobalt and Aveo like small cars. That was probably unwilling to competently challenge the competition on the truck market, and that still insisting on re-developing everything accepted from europe, just to prove that they can do it better (yeah right, look at the Focus). the current products: Fusion, Edge, 05 and 08 Five Hundred, Mustang, 05 F150, 07 Expedition, new Escape, new SuperDuty - they are all products developed way before Fields - all the new management can do is ensure quality, and change around options / packages/ standard features. They simply came in too late.

Fairlane, redesigned 08/09 Mustang, probably redesigned 08 F150 and the B and C cars will finally be the cars to be used against/for the new management - they will be the full babies of the new people in charge.

I hope I made sense.. if not I am happy to explain myself more clearly.

Cheers,

Igor

Igor=Mark Fields????

I'm not really bagging on you Igor, in fact in all the pessimism on this board it is nice to see some optimism.

That is not to say that I can not understand all the pessimists. Things as they are presently breed such sentiment. As for me, I HOPE Mark Fields can turn this around (without sending all of our jobs to Mexico). Really not much else we can do, we are all just pawns.

Do not know him .. never even visited Detroit (the closest I got was Ann Arbor. I am simply a person who is trained and paid to do social resarch - one of the aspects of the work is attention to details and understanding of facts in their soial and organizational context... understanding what outcomes can we reasonably expect, and what is simply impossible to achieve given outside factors.

Expecting a brand new RWD platform 6 months after new management might have decided on its pursuit is pure fantasy... it could never ever happen .. it is simply impossible regardless whether it is Ford, GM, or the almighty Toyota .... GM has been working on Zeta for at least 2 years ...

That is why I defend the new managemet against pessimissm, but will not run around with "Fields is my hero" button, untill I see the results... and as I said ... I will reserve my judgement on this management until Summer 2008 - far off for sure, but anything earlier than that would man jumping the gun and making rash decisions.... and I am not about to do that.

Igor remember, we're in a "gotta have it now" society.

I agree with you on most of your points but the advertising is just plain wrong for the Ford brand. Mercury and Lincoln seem to be working, but the signature Ford 'Bold Moves' is just wrong.

Ford = Work. Look at the trucks and cars. F-Series trucks means workhorses. The cars are police, taxi, government service and rentals. Go to the base and build within then outward.

I know it takes 18 months for a turn around plan to work, but GM seems to be 2 years ahead of schedule. They are doing something right!

Well, we are the worker drones, after all. Generally interchangeable, and there are plenty of folks that can do our jobs. Fields addressed us at the original "Way Forward" announcement, what good would it do to continue talking about us? The "media" is in the business to sell advertising, bad news sells, good news doesn't. As far as the stock market goes, the auto industry stocks have always been underperformers, probably always will be. I think it's a little early claim the plan is not working. One last thought, what the newspapers would consider an "adequate" plan probably would involve the company abandoning all of it's commitments to it's UAW represented employees, and massive cuts for retirees.

well they started earlier .... Bill Ford was in charge of FoMoCo for a while, and was working on all the other divisions, but he was completely not allowed to rule in Ford NA until late last year... GM has had Lutz and wagoner in charge for at least 2 years now.

However, I do believe that if Fields and the new management keeps on going, in 3 years Ford will be in better shape than GM. I feel their plan is more thorough, providing better base for long term sustainable development. GM put good new products to the pipeline (e.g. the Zetas) and is bringing them to market.. but inside, it is the same old GM with the same possibility of bad decisions again in the future, when the product czar will not be as strong as Bob Lutz.

I actually agree with Igor to a point. I said that it would take years to feel the full effect of Nasser and I think we finally are reaching the pinnacle of that debacle. Likewise it will take a few years to feel the full effect of Ford and Fields. I think they are flat out brain dead when they lop top in class plants, I would love to hear the reasoning behind these decisions so I can watch to see if the logic bears fruit or not.

Even though I am being bitten by this closing of plants I am mildly optimistic that the company might be doing somethings right... I hope my optimism isn't misplaced.

Learn from history.

The last time Ford Motor Comany was on the financial ropes and in a desperate situation was the early 80's, they simply could not afford failure and pulled one of the biggest turn arounds in the company's history. What products worked...

1. F-Series, totally redesigned for 1980 it would remain the sales leader for 15 years with only 2 minor redesigns and normal powertrain upgrades. At the time it was introduced the media thought Ford had wasted too much money on it's development cost, they were wrong.

2. Ranger, introduced in '82 it quickly takes the compact truck sales leader title from the Japanese and is still the highest MPG pickup truck on the market, better fuel mileage of course was the whole purpose for compact trucks.

3. Escort, Ford's first "world car" in spite of lukewarm press it proves to be a durable economy car that cost very little to buy and maintain which is exactly what an economy car should be. Bragging rights in this class are highest MPG and lowest cost of ownership above all else, a "sport" model is fun to have but expensive (Focus SVT) versions aren't the core customer. Example: Toyota's current generation Corolla has a cheap beam rear axle and rear drum brakes instead of the 4-wheel independant suspension of it's predecessor and Corolla sales don't seem to be suffering.

4. Thunderbird, how to go from looser to success using the same platform (saving money). The box Fairmont body T-bird was replaced by the areo style bird in 1983 and sales exploded instantly. The Fusion could have repeated that success if it was a beautifully styled, mid sized, rear wheel drive, All-American 2-door coupe...but it isn't.

5. Taurus, the all time big gamble that paid off. Outrageous cutting edge styling, for a 4-door family sedan in 1985, and a totally new platform that impressed even the Ford hating press. This car more than any other saved Ford Motor Company in the 80's too bad Ford styling took it from unique and good looking to outright weird in the 90's. Same great car under the skin but with a body only a rental car company could love, kind of like a 90"s Edsel. Must be AAP's fault, yea that's it, let's close Atlanta and build Fusions in Mexico.

6. Mustang, new generation introduced in '79 with style that would last 16 years but build quality was a train wreck, I know, I still have my '82 GT. Mustang enthusiasts will forgive a lot if it has a V8 and runs like a Mustang should. The Mustang is one of the few Fords that is getting better with each new generation.

7. Crown Vic, redesigned in 1979 basiclly making the old midsized LTD-II platform the new full sized Ford sedan. A car for the traditional American sedan buyer it may not be for everyone but it put good profit on the bottom line.

These vehicles that saved the company back then were all left without major redesigns for over 10 years...all of them. But what did Ford do with all of the profit these American cars earned? Why they bought Jaguar, Aston Martin, Range Rover and Volvo of course! All of that money wasted on foreign companies instead of investinng it into Ford, Lincoln and Mercury. And now the Way Forward is to close 14 AMERICAN plants and invest in foreign operations. By compairson Toyota always reinvests profit back into Toyota or start it's own Lexus and now Scion, not bail out outside looser companies.

Ford Motor Company was started to build cars for the average working class American, that is what built the company and that is the reason it exists. The problem is how to make multi-millionaire executives see what working class customers want. Hint: this American is not interrested in your foreign built con-Fusion.

Ford seems to leave products on the vine until they are dead and then they need a homerun in order to justify the billions they spend on R&D on a new model. I have never read anything that says Toyota spends much on R&D, they just continually spend money to improve their products, thus never needing a homerun. Maybe Ford should just keep investing in the product they have, continued improvements... Just an idea.

F250 after reading your post as well as several others on other threads I really think that Ford has lost thier way. What I mean is that they cannot please all markets so why try? Seems that it would be much better to go after who buys Fords to begin with. All the products you mention didn't go after the money, they went after the workers and the middle class families. They went after the backyard mechanics and the guys that were tuners before they had tuners. Since our top brass doesn't know these types in the circle of friends they have they don't understand. Like my last post that is why people believed in Ioccoca he grew from that blue collar family. He understood what they wanted and how they thought. In truth that is what Gunslinger is asking, Mark come down to our level and ask us what works for us, the middle class working people of the USA. When someone thinks they know all the answers they really are the ones that don't know shit, because if you know it all you close your mind and never learn.

Igor I still have a hard time with your posts from what I have written above. Bill has ran this company long enough to find the right person to turn it around. His choices have been less than stellar and having what 3 restucuring in 10 years does not show me much in him. He has to convince me that he can get a leader, a plan, and stick it out and make it work. Like another poster said it takes money to make money, if they have 20 odd billion start spending not cutting. From the plant level I personally can tell you that they are not spending at all and this effects everything we do. From the actual equipment maintanence to stopping the line over a quality issue the mentallity is ass backwards. When Ford is not spending guess who pays: the customer, the one who won't buy a Ford next time.

Sparks Will Fly, I agree Ford Motor Company lost direction years ago. Yes, they do still have some outstanding products like the F-Series and Mustang. But when they purchased the European brands, what is now referred to as the Premier Auto Group (PAG) Ford sent the message to the working class Americans "thanks for your money but we don't want to be known as a blue collar car company anymore." Excuse us but we, the customers, thought Lincoln and Mercury were Ford's premier auto groups.

When Ford bought Jaguar that company was pathetic, they had only a couple of models in production and they were decades old, Jag's quality reputation was the joke of the automotive world. So Ford pours money and resources into them producing all new models with modern engineering while Lincoln gets the leftovers. When I see a new Jag convertable, sport coupe or sedan I think that should have been a Lincoln.

When Ford bought Volvo that company was building what was possably the most boaring styled, underpowered vehicles on the planet. Their only claim to fame was safety, yes their (few) owners were safe driving their plain, slow sedans. Ford pours money and resources into Volvo and turns them into modern, good looking vehicles with good power...while Mercury gets whatever money is leftover.

And if you were a Lincoln dealer wouldn't it be great to have a full line of unique high-end SUVs to sell instead of one rebadged Ford. That is what the new models of Range Rover could have been.

All of those models produced with Ford Motor Company money and resources and then given to the PAG instead of Lincoln/Mercury. An entire decade wasted building the reputations and products of European brand names while starving the Americans that were paying the bills. Why not build those PAG vehicles here in America like Mercedes and BMW do.

Now that North American operations are in trouble Ford's answer is to cut the home team to shreads, 14 plants, 30,000 American family's jobs lost.

I don't remember Ford turning the PAG brands around by cutting them apart, hell no, they got all the money they needed to develop new product!

The financial fact is that a strong Ford/Lincoln/Mercury would earn Ford a lot more profit than the novelty PAG brands ever could. But I'm not a automotive executive, I'm just a customer, what do I know.

I hope Ford makes it for our stocks sake. The down side to this is everyone that used to work at NAP, TCAP etc etc probally won't be able to afford to buy a new vehicle. Like Ross Perot predicted "Build them with cheap labor overseas then try to sell them to people without a job"

Sparks Will Fly and F-250, I agree. It seems the only brand that got any of Ford's money were the ones in which Junior himself buys from. What Prince William wants he gets. However, the remake of Jaguar and Volvo was on the backs of the profits cars like the Lincoln made. Now Lincoln is being tossed to the curb.

+1

I realize the fusion boosts ford profits, but to me its an import...theres a lot of good imports out there, but not in my driveway(dont care what names on the bumper- sorry). Hopefully products will shape up here before the whole economy implodes.

Somebody quoted Perot in one of the threads too-

'build it with cheep offshore labor and try to sell it to a guy without a job' or something like that...Ol' Perot knew how to sum things up pretty darn accurately in few words. Can you realize that was 14 years ago???I was out cleaning my garage today and found an old Perot poster behind a cabinet- was it really 1992??? Too bad Mr Ford didnt ask old Ross about what he would do in their shoes...I dont think building foriegn plants woulda been on his 'to do' list. Perot saw it coming- just like most of us did...and I keep hearing about our strong economy. the only strong economy circulates inside the pockets of our government- see the got their annual raises a few weeks ago- times must be good.

Hey Gunslinger, you really said what had to be said. Great Post. And if he decides to hide in the mountains, I hope he doesn't get lost, after all, people from Fla aren't used to hills :runaway: Like they say: You can run but you can't hide or if you still want to keep on running, you'll just die tired :hysterical::rockon:

Thank you!!
