Sync w/ MyFord Touch & Phone compatibility

So I spent a little bit of time in a Titanium yesterday and played with the MyFord Touch system. I just got the Nexus 4, so wanted to see if it plays nicely with the car. I also had my wife's iPhone 5, so I connected both phones.

I was surprised to see that my brand new Nexus 4 doesn't have the MAP bluetooth profile, so the car couldn't access my text messages. The iPhone 5 is supposed to have it, but when I tried to access them it just said the inbox was empty. I even sent a message to the iPhone and it didn't show up anywhere in the Sync system.

Here's a quote on MAP support in iOS 6:

"Apple's support for MAP will make remote devices far more useful. There is no doubt that this came about to help create native iOS support by BMW, General Motors,Toyota, Mercedes, Honda, and Audi." Why is Ford not on that list?

So what are your experiences with this system? Were you able to get it to read text messages and/or e-mails?

I have heard reports that stock Android does NOT have MAP support. To gain MAP support you will have to flash Cyanogenmod or AOKP. I have a Galaxy Nexus that is currently running stock 4.2 JB just like your Nexus 4. Once my car arrives and CM10.1 is released I will be flashing and loading it so that it will play nicely with MyFord Touch

JSKershaw is correct that Android doesn't support MAP natively. If you're on a Nexus phone, you'll need to flash CM10 or some other ROM that supports it. Some Android OEM's that do customization (Motorola & HTC come to mind) add MAP support.

According to the compatibility guide on the Sync site, the iPhone isn't compatible with the MAP implemetation used by Sync (http://www.nsapp.for...EN_iop_2_00.pdf). I think it has something to do with the iPhone requiring "protected MAP" and the Sync system not supporting it. (Or maybe it was vice-versa, can't remember).

ETA: Apple's site says:

"Note: iOS requires that the remote Bluetooth device support an encrypted connection. When establishing a pairing record between your iOS device and a Bluetooth device, you are also setting up encryption between the two devices."

In case anyone has a Galaxy S3 I found this: http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s3/600775-solved-sgh-i747m-map-bluetooth-profile-ford-sync.html

Looks like it will work for anyone that has a S3. I didn't attempt to try it when I paired my phone to the Titanium I test drove. But the Bluetooth connection itself, just to play music, was stupid simple/fast.

Yes, anyone with the latest version of Touchwiz found in Android 4.0.4 and above will have MAP support. This includes the Galaxy Note 1 & 2, GSIII, GSII (once upgrade to ICS) and a handful of other devices that have been upgraded from 2.3 to 4.0.4 (and above)

Note, all of the iOS phones on that page are running iOS 5.x, not 6.

http://www.allfordmustangs.com/forums/2011-mustang-talk/358535-ios-6-sync-map-bluetooth-profile-iphone.html has an example of someone who has it working on iOS6 with Sync, so it's probably a feature that is new to iOS

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4363490?start=0&tstart=0 has it with MyFord Touch working.

http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13746_7-20121575-48/sync-update-adds-new-yet-little-known-bluetooth-profile-to-vehicles/ indicates that last year it was new, so not surprised if it hasn't made it into everything yet.

didn't they just update this like last month?

Yup, they just added MAP support recently:

http://www.quora.com...upport-in-iOS-6

That article shows a few car manufacturers and Ford is not one of them. I'm glad some people were able to get it working. I guess I'll have to play with it more next year when my Fusion comes in :)

For those that already have a VIN for your pre-ordered car. Have you gone ahead and registered an account on www.syncmyride.com? Or is this something you will wait and do when your car arrives? I was thinking about doing it today to read through some of the site, etc.

I did it ahead of time. Of course that VIN was the car I didnt end up getting. But thats OKAY, you can add a second VIN and delete the first one.

In 2008 my Edge read text messages from a Motorola Razr using first generation sync. Sync has always had MAP support way before MFT.

perhaps I should be clearer :)

I was wondering if Ford made an update more recently than the September one that might have more fully implemented MAP on their end. Apparently Apple made an update between ios 5 and 6 to implement it on the iDevice end.

You may be correct. I'm not an Apple guy so I don't really keep up with their releases. I just posted what a quick Google search turned up.

  • 3 months later...

In case anyone is interested, I finally got my 2013 FFH SE to play my text messages from my Galaxy S3.

I read in syncmyride.com that MAP won't work on the GS3 if you have another app loaded that integrates with text messaging. On my phone, I tracked down the offending app to be Vlingo. I uninstalled Vlingo and re-paired my phone, and then Sync started receiving my text messages. On a whim, I then reinstalled Vlingo and Sync still reads my text messages.

Will the Fusion read the text messages to/from an iPhone?

Yes it will. On your iPhone in the Bluetooth settings make sure "show notifications" is on. For me, it was so god damn annoying. I shut it off after 5 minutes.
