BORG
I went to the show this morning and spent allot of time there, especially at the Ford and Lincoln exhibit where I hoped to confirm the my next vehicle. I'm pretty infatuated with the MKZ at this point, especially in White (I reserved the black one, damn it!). But it is a very tight car with a low intrusive roof structure, there is no denying they made some compromise to give us that design and glass roof. But the interior is absolutely gorgeous to look at and interact with, very comfortable seats, and the interior pipe-lighting was especially exciting to me and I love everything this car says about design and technology. It's definitely not the most practical vehicle for me, but I think it's a go because it makes up for it in other ways. The MKC Concept is nice...but it doesn't really excite me as much as the MKZ. I'm not a big fan of the wavy belt-line and some of the more derivative design traits. I'm sure it will interest me far more in production form The Ford exhibit is always a big well crafted production, lots of great cars to see and experience. I'm a big fan of the Explorer Sport, they had a Black one there and I know this is the car I SHOULD be getting, but I just don't love the interior, especially since it's only available in black or black with Sienna accents. The Atlas is okay, nothing exciting. The next F-150 clearly isn't breaking any new design ground, it's pretty generic stuff, perhaps even more so than the GM trucks. Which is fine, it's good solid design and I'm sure it does everything a world-class truck needs it to do. They had quite a few Transit Wagon's around (locked), and I actually heard somebody say "I'd easily take this over the Flex"...I personally think they look ridiculous and the Flex is pretty damn sexy nowadays. They also had the Transit (which is HUGE) and PI's in various forms. This is also my first exposure to the updated Fiesta, but they were all locked. Overall Ford has lots of great cars already, just nothing really new or exciting. GM's exhibit was interesting, stuffing Buick and GMC in the back corner, giving most of the territory to Chevy. I have NEVER see a swarm of people for a car like I saw for the Corvette, that was insane! It was so bad I could not get good photographs and gave up on it. Caddy was also crammed with people, lines for every car with allot of people swarming the ATS. I really like everything Caddy has, except for the terrible seats in the SRX. CUE looks and works brilliantly, I love how well the display integrates with the dash and the control panel, Ford tends to still treat the display as something apart from everything else. U-Connect and MyLink have terrible looking UI's, but they are far more responsive with better touch displays. Other things to note, the Buick Encore has the worst seats I sat in at the show, can't stand that car with it's brown dashboard. If anybody thinks Buick and Lincoln are competitors really needs to go check out the crap they are building now, no way! Just a hot mess and hodgepodge of different car types that make no sense. Surprise favorite concept car of the show is the Nissan, loved photographing the lines on that thing, just beautiful. Perhaps my favorite production car of the show is the Audi RS7....WOW that's hot stuff! The ELR is also stunning, it's going to be wild to see that going down the road, definitely extraordinary stuff. If I had the money, it would be on a BMW X6 or X5. I took tons of photos which I will upload eventually. Edited January 20, 2013 by BORG
atomcat68
I was at the New England auto show today. I agree on the MKZ (stunning) and the ATS (So much better in person!!!) I was shocked at how busy Ford was! Other busy displays were Toyota, Honda, Caddy, Lexus, BMW, Audi and Mercedes. The crickets were chirping at Mazda, Chrysler, and Ram. Lincoln was a ghost town except for a group that was always circling the MKZ turntable and sitting in the MKZ floor display. I got to drive the Fusion and loved it! (the best part being the two minutes it was not stuck in the Boston Traffic). It was the 2.0 turbo with AWD. The MFT seemed to work faster than last year which was in an Explorer and Focus I drove. I still think it's an option I'd pass up though. Tesla was not even in the show, but there was A Model S parked next to my car outside! (very sexy and much more so than Fisker which was in the show and was collecting lint all alone by itself)
02MustangGT
I spent quite some time in the Ford and Lincoln display today as well. Winners in my opinion are the new Fusion and MKZ. The MKC was more impressive in person than in photos. I hope the production vehicle maintains the wide and low stance. The Vette display was packed with show goers and the turntable was not operational while I was there. It was difficult to see the entire car with the crowd. I found the Audi display quite interesting. As with many other displays, Audi had the options and details listed for most of their vehicles. I was blown away by the prices of the S series cars. $100k for an Audi? At any rate, the crowd wasn't too overwhelming, except for the Vette display. We started our morning at the Six Pack for breakfast and stopped in again after the show for some Labatt Blue. Great day I must say!
Extreme4x4
Borg, you should have an Explorer Sport, you would love it. The interior is actually very warm and nice, especially if you get the moon roof / fixed glass option. We never close the sun blocks (I'm sure we will in the summer). Everything is soft touch and of good quality. We have been very impressed. I had the Sport for a week, and had to let the hubby have it back. Driving the SD is like driving something from the 80's, after the Sport. LOL We love ours. We get to go on a nice road trip on Monday (670 miles round trip), so may do a write up on it. Gonna stop by a few Triple D dining spots (love that show), and really let her stretch her legs.

Hugh
Thanks for the feedback BORG. I look forward to see the pictures. Too bad the cars were locked. I assume they were pre-production?
jpd80
Thanks Borg, I recon that sounds like a fair assessment of the vehicles there. Perhaps instead of MKT, Lincon should have a lovely Aviator Ecoboost with an array of interior trims, colors and finishes, part of that personal customization Farley mentioned. You'd think that something between MKX and Navigator with the MKT's longer wheelbase would sell well. Kind of like a Lincoln version of a non-existant Explorer EL.... Thanks for the feedback BORG. I look forward to see the pictures. Too bad the cars were locked. I assume they were pre-production? The Transits and Fiestas were pre-production models so they kept those locked. They even had big badges on the window that they were 'locked for your safety'. Oookay! I'm really just waiting on some better Crossovers at Lincoln, the MKX is just too old now and the MKT just isn't appealing despite a beautiful interior. The MKC should hit the spot, I love my Escape although it's still cramped for me so it'll be interesting to see what Lincoln does with the interior to make it feel posher. And of course we have the next-gen MKX which is what I want.

After seeing the Fiesta ST snake-pit in the engine bay perhaps look out for that Transit steering column to drop in your lap. Awkward. BORG
I'm definitely looking forward to these - your annual NAIAS photos are as good or better than those from professional media organizations, BORG! Thanks! Sadly, I had a little lens malfunction with my new camera and managed to get lots of blurry shots at the exhibits I first visited in the day (before I discovered the problem) which happened to be Ford and Lincoln. So I've been a bit slow to get those up because I have to pull out lots of bad ones. And 2b2, my box is free.

Fingers crossed, the CD4 Edge is all that we image it to be and the new MKX takes that to another level.. MKC looks cheeky and refined all at once and should sell well to the younger buyers just what Lincoln needs. hbalek
I went to the Detroit show all day yesterday and as a current Lincoln owner, the Lincoln Lounge staff really coddled me with complimentary cappuccinos, biscotti, bottled water and a customer appreciation gift catalog! The young lady also registered me for Lincoln Date Night, which means as soon as my dealer has an MKZ in stock, I will get to drive it for 24-48 hours and a free $100 dinner for two at a local restaurant. I sat in several MKZ's yesterday for the first time and was really impressed with the interior design and quality of materials. The rear seat is much roomier than the old MKZ but the front seat actually feels tighter because of the console height. Not a big deal though and I can live with it. The rep who drove all 3 drivetrains said she didn't notice much of a difference between the 2.0 and 3.7 power. She said she preferred the hybrid herself. Now I"m confused about which engine to choose. The color is definitely going to be Smoked Quartz with either Hazelnut or Stone interior. I'm used to AWD now so I may have to get either 2.0 AWD or 3.7 AWD. I was really annoyed with Mercedes-Benz not having the CLA on display for the public show! I believe Land Rover pulled this a few years back with an introduction, where they took away the new model that debuted for the press! I had to waive my Lincoln car keys at the Lincoln lady to let me upstairs, she said it was by invitation only. Apparently I wasn't invited. I don't look like a Lincoln owner I guess I went with White and Hazelnut for my MKZ, should have it by the end of the month. Fully loaded. A bit of an AutoShow tradition for me is to snap a photo of me next to my future car, been doing that since my 2002 LS even before I knew I would buy one. BORG
So you decided against the MKX? I thought you were going that route? At any rate, look forward to pics of your new ride...congrats! I was, but a dealer trade fell through and I couldn't get what I wanted without 2+month ordering wait, so now I'm back to reserving an MKZ already on its way to the dealership. I may still change my mind once I drive it

BORG
Congrats on the new car choice. I hope you do like it on test driving it. I look forward to your review. Thanks! I can't help but feel that the main reason I'm so eager to get this is because it's the hot new thing and it looks fabulous, but in the long-run I'm concerned it's not the smart thing to do. I always said I would never buy another car, but the MKZ is pretty damn hard to resist if you're a long-time Lincoln customer. But I can't help but wonder how I'm going to feel about parking my MKX for the last time at the dealership and driving off with a car that's so much smaller. Ah, have I mentioned how much torture this is for me? LOL I'm hoping a test drive will make things clearer for me, but somehow I doubt it. I went through this debate before with the 2011 MKS and the MKX. The MKS was cheaper and more fun to drive, but I ultimately decided I wanted the stay in an MKX for very good reasons (comfort, height, visibility, robustness, space, utility, vista roof, new tech). I don't know why I'm letting myself go through this again Part of the issue is the fact that the MKZ has a full panoramic roof which frees up my decision to go in either direction. Otherwise this would be simpler because I consider it a must-have. It's one of the reasons I won't buy an MKS, Taurus, Explorer, Fusion, etc...
