Buzzing/whine noise from 2.0l Ecoboost '13 Fusion...

My car makes the same noise too, and I've wondered what it is. I don't have a definitive answer, but here's my theory...

The turbos for the EcoBoost motors are oil and water cooled, and obviously the mechanically driven cooling won't be happening after you turn the engine off (off go the oil and water pumps). Water cooling will continue, though, via thermal siphon (mentioned in this Ford article), so my guess is that this sound is some sort of valve or diverter in the coolant plumbing that's adjusting flow as things cool down. I only ever hear it after driving it for a while and then parking it, and it will happen intermittently as things cool down, so it seems like a logical guess.

That's a good article. I wondered if the car had some sort of after-run system to cool the turbo when the car is shut off. I'm still used to having an only oil-cooled turbo on my 6.0L I used to having and letting it idle for a while before shutting it off.

  • 2 months later...

Earlier this week my 13' started making a weird humming noise. I've attached a recording through my Dropbox account here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11175964/FF%2013%20Noise.m4a

You can hear it happen twice in the first 10 sec. I'm not even sure what to call this kind of noise! :/

I placed the phone on the driver side dashboard where I believe the noise is coming from.

This happened last Tuesday(30th) and Thursday(1st) morning going to work and coming home from work.

It seems to start about 15-20 min into my drive.

I was not running the AC on either occurrence.

Any idea what this could be? Should I take it to my dealer?
