  • Ford China 2013 wholesales reach 935,813 vehicles, up 49%; December sales up 35%;
  • CAF passenger car 2013 wholesales reach 678,951 vehicles, up 62%; December sales up 42%;
  • JMC commercial vehicle 2013 wholesales reach 230,006 vehicles, up 15%;

SHANGHAI, Jan. 6, 2014 - Ford China sold 935,813 wholesale vehicles in 2013, a 49 percent increase from 626,616 vehicles in 2012.

December sales were also strong, with 94,838 vehicles sold in 2013, up 35 percent from 70,510 vehicles sold in December 2012.

“2013 has proved to be a milestone year for Ford’s accelerated growth in China as we delivered on our plan to bring to China seven of Ford’s

next-generation global vehicles, including the Ford EcoSport, the Ford Kuga, the new Fiesta, and the all-new Mondeo. In 2013, strong Chinese

customer demand for our greatly expanded lineup of vehicles allowed Ford China to set yet another annual sales record,” said John Lawler, chairman

and CEO of Ford Motor China. “In 2014, by remaining focused on our plan, we look forward to serving more Chinese customers —growing our capacity,

expanding our dealership network, and continuing to bring them high-quality, safe, fuel efficient and smart Ford vehicles.”

In 2013, Ford also dramatically expanded its imported vehicle offerings in China, with the introduction of the Ford Focus ST, the Ford Fiesta ST,

and the Ford Explorer. Alongside the Ford Edge, these four imported nameplates sold 26,856 wholesales in 2013, up 231 percent

compared to 8,108 in 2012.

Ford's passenger car joint venture Changan Ford Automobile (CAF) hit a new sales milestone in 2013 with 678,951 wholesales sold in 2013,

up 62 percent from 418,500 wholesales sold in 2012. CAF also had a record December, selling 70,098 wholesales, up 42 percent from 49,212

in December 2012.

The Ford Focus nameplate continued to lead 2013 sales with 403,640 wholesales sold in 2013, up 36 percent from 296,360 wholesales

last year. Last year also marked the introduction of the Ford Kuga, the Ford EcoSport, and the All-New Ford Mondeo, which sold 95,891,

59,680, and 35,747 wholesale units respectively in 2013.

Jiangling Motors Corporation (JMC), Ford's commercial vehicle investment in China, also set new records, with 230,006 wholesales sold for the year,

up 15 percent from 200,008 wholesales in 2012. As a demonstration of its strong commitment to JMC, Ford completed its purchase of 2 percent of

additional shares in JMC in 2013, taking its total ownership in the company to 32 percent.

And Ford is planning to add another 300,000 capacity by 2015, so it's looking at 1.25 million in the next 12-18 months.

Heady stuff, rapid expansion is going to see Ford with some massive global figures for Focus.........

The one to watch will be Ecosport and how the Chinese take to Ford's SUVs, so far sales are increasing strongly...

Given the truth that all three Japanese car makers also got double digit growth in Chinese market, I don't think such anti-Japanese sentiments really contributed too much to Ford growth in China. Considering US and Japan are allies and US supports Japanese in the dispute of those islands. Anti-Japanese sentiments actually hurt US businesses in China. I believe it is the great products of Ford that causes the strong growth of Ford in China.

I agree... the supposed anti-Japanese sentiments affected maybe 1 month of sales.

The real problem facing Honda and Toyota is their inability to placate 2 joint venture partners. It's hard to expand more aggressively when you are spending most of your time and energy fighting a rearguard action between your two partners. For example, the old JDM/Euro Honda Accord (Acura TSX to us) is a Dongfeng Honda product but the US Accord is a GAIC Honda product. With sales of midsize car in full collapse mode in Japan and Europe, Honda wisely decided to not replace the JDM/Euro Accord. But now there is open warfare between Honda and Dongfeng over what to do with the old JDM/Euro Accord. Dongfeng is demanding a replacement and Honda is saying "we'll get back to you..."

Not withstanding what competitors are doing, Ford increasing sales by 300,000 in the last 12 months

and saying that they intend to increase sales the same amount again this year is an impressive catch up.

If December's 95,000 odd sales is any indication, Ford is on track to do just that..........

Ford still has a long way to go to catch up some of the really big manufacturer partnerships, like VW and GM JVs but

a single Ford brand first approaching 1.2 million sales and looking higher beyond that would be an outstanding achievement.

Does Ford market the Cargo cabover truck in China? Is that part of the commercial truck venture?

Jiangling Ford sells Ford Transit. Supposedly, they will add T6 Ranger and Everest to the mix this year.

http://www.jmc.com.cn/english/product/product.asp?contrast=jdqs

Ford owns 50% of Jiangling Ford but also owns 32% of Jiangling itself.

Taiyuan was just purchased by JMC, so it might take awhile before you see Ford entering that plant just due to the lag time.

But I bet it is something they will do.

I think so too... it is interesting to note that Ford is steadily adding to its investment in JMC, now up to 32%, which is comparable to Ford's ownership of Mazda at the height of Ford's involvement with the Japanese company.

JMC already sells medium duty trucks based on obsolete Isuzu models, basically several different prior generation of the N-series cab forward trucks. While Ford's current interest appeals to be expanding the capacity for Transit and adding Ranger/Everest with JMC, we can kind of connect the dots and see that Cargo may in fact be in play if Ford intends to enter that space in China.

One would suspect that if Chinese laws would allow it, Ford probably would be interested in buying the whole company.

Under the current formula, Ford has the option to increase it to 37%. That might be an agreement with Changan and the other stock holders or something.
