PREMiERdrum
General Motors Co. said on Thursday it is recalling 778,562 older-model Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 compact cars in North America to correct a condition that may allow the engine and other components, including airbags, to be unintentionally turned off. In the affected cars from model years 2005 through 2007, the weight on the key ring, road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine and most of the car's electrical components, GM said in a statement. GM was aware of five frontal-impact crashes and six front-seat fatalities in crashes where the front airbags did not deploy, a company spokesman said. All of the crashes occurred off road and at high speeds, where the probability of serious or fatal injuries was high regardless of airbag deployment, the spokesman said. http://www.chicagotribune.com/classified/automotive/sns-rt-us-autos-gm-recall-20140213,0,465669.story Edited February 13, 2014 by PREMiERdrum
RichardJensen
'off road and at high speeds' in a Cobalt or G5? Yikes.
RangerM
Perhaps a silly question, but can I infer that if you're sitting in a parked car (ignition off), and someone else hits you, the airbags don't go off?
jpd80
Yes Ranger, the air bags don't deploy when the ignition is switched off, A few jiggly ignition lock caused all of that..... Edited February 13, 2014 by jpd80
RangerM
Yes Ranger, the air bags don't deploy when the ignition is switched off, Although there's no reason for an empty car's airbags to go off, getting hit while sitting in a parked (on the side of the highway) car is a distinct possibility. Not going off makes sense if you're hit from behind, but if you were hit on the side, wouldn't you want the side curtain airbags to? I'm conflicted on it (as you can tell). akirby
I could be wrong but I interpreted it as the vehicles left the road at a high rate of speed and impacted something like a tree or rock.
RichardJensen
That would make sense.
