Ovaltine
A little blast from the past...... Remember these (see below)? Before I bought my '88 LX 5.0, I was considering buying a new '86 Escort GT. I'm glad I waited. The Escort would have (obviously) been long gone by now, while the 'Stang's still in my garage! Also.... it's humorous to see how far small cars have come in 20 years. My '83 Escort 5 speed had the "big motor" or "H.O." option on the 1.6L. It put out a whopping 80 HP! My 2004.5 Spectra 2.0L 16v puts out 138 HP, and has CVVT (variable valve timing) to boot! Thank YOU technology! silvrsvt
My first car was my dad's 86 Escort GT...the photo you have up there is part of the 89 "reskin" I have photos the Escort Getting built at EAP as it was going down the line and it had a couple extra things done to it. Between my Father and I we had a 140K on it when I sold it right before going into the Army. I got out of the Army in 1997 and was working PT in an autoparts store while going to school. I was working one day and saw a familar site...the very same Escort I owned pulled up in front of the store...it was in really bad shape (you would be too if you went though 2 major accidents to the subframe) but was still running with well over 200K on it. IIRC the Escort 1.9L HO "hemi" engine put out like 100-110HP, my SVT Focus I had had a 2.0L that dynoed at 155HP or so at the wheels, a little north of the 170HP at the crank rating. atomcat68
I remember those very well. My 1987 EXP looked like a carbon copy of the one in your picture. I had that car for 7 years and it was great to own a car that was even more rare than Porches. Many Ford dealerships didn't even know what it was. It was slow, but it got 40(!) mpg on long trips. The girl who bought it kept getting in car accidents, so my red car had tan and white doors and silver fenders and those also got dented. the car was hit so hard that the dashboard broke in half! The car kept running fine according to her up to 120,000 miles and being in that condition, then the car dropped dead. :rip: That girl shouldn't have had a licence. OAC_Sparky
I had an '82, which was a 1st Gen EXP I bought it in 1992 for $300, put a battery, brakes, tires, a carb and a gas tank in, put 80 000 km on it, sold it for $500 two years later... Was a good solid litle car, if not a little underpowered...
Ovaltine
Thats the second gen exp. The first one was really ugly with bug eyes. Here's an LN7 (Mercury Lynx) with the "bug eyes" you mention Pictures of these cars are pretty rare on the 'Net. As many as was sold, I'm surprised. I couldn't find exact matches for the cars I really wanted to display, so I went with the closest I could find. -Ovaltine Edited August 17, 2006 by Ovaltine

ipchay61
Wow, this brings back some memories! My very first brand new car was an '83 Escort GT. That was the first year fuel injection and a 5 sp (I think) was available on the 1.6L engine with a whopping 88hp if I remember correctly. Averaged around mid 30's mpg. Traded a '77 Trans Am in on it. Bought this car before I could drive a manual transmission, had my uncle go with me to pick it up. We stopped in an empty industrial park where he showed me how to take off and I drove home from there. Called my girlfriend (now wife of 22+ yrs) who told me to come over so she could see it. Choked it down twice on the way over. :blah: Desert Tan w/ tan cloth interior/TRX pkg with aluminum wheels that looked like they came off of a Porsche. Neat handling little car for the times. Now I've gotta go look for my old window sticker. -Chip in SC Edited August 17, 2006 by ipchay61

B) -Ovaltine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_EXP http://www.escortfocus.com/html/history.html I had an 1983 Lynx RS (same as the Escort GT) that came with the 1.6 EFI engine. It was Ford's first domestic engine with multiport fuel injection and was rated at 88 horsepower. There was also an optional 120 hp engine. I loved that little car. It handled well with the TRX suspension. I got rid of it when it needed tires and that size wasn't available. I ended up ordering an 87 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe. 630land
I had an 86 EGT and it was nice and got 37-40MPG hiway. But it had cheap parts and some broke after 40K miles, like struts, ignition module, and interor things. Traded in on a 1991 Tracer LTS with DOHC 1.8 motor, and it was a much better car, just no high MPG. bifs66
We had an 84 Escort that I believe is still being used by someone and must have untold miles on the clock by now. IMO, a much better car was our 91 Escort GT which was a completely different design. It had the 1.8L 16V engine (that was a joy), and a very good suspension. It was roomy for four people, could haul a ton of stuff (hatchback), and was trouble free. Some years ago, we passed it on to our son well after 100K miles; and he continues to use it for commuting to work. RichardJensen
I thought it was a good looking car also. I think I still kind of like it. The rims rock!! I liked the LN-7 with the bubble-back better. Friend had one in high school. Rode back there a couple times, then he threw a rod. Kind of a surprising thing. Don't know if I've ever heard of a Ford engine throwing a rod. At least not under normal use (although............. this particular LN-7 did get thrashed pretty well by the guy I knew). http://showcase.netins.net/web/ln7budking/ BEST LN-7 PAGE EVER Then there's this little unexplained mystery:

shayes
had an 86 EGT, what a POS. Then I got a 91 EGT, loved that car. to this day, I wish I still had it. Traded it for a Mazda Millenia some years back. It would have been the perfect vehicle for me today. Great highway car, great in the snow, loved it!
