1st Gen Ford Escort EXP and GT

Recommended Posts

I had a 1988 1/2 escort GT. Was a great car and never had any problems with it. It had a defective computer early and they replaced it, that's it. It was silver over grey and was a much better overall car then any of the import competitors(renault Fuego included). This is back when Japanese cars still had their emblems rusting off the cars within 2 years. For its time it was quite impressive. The later Mazda-based EGT was also a great car.

I can't remember now if it had a 1.8L engine or what. I think it was 115 or so horsepower, any 4 over 100hp was considered somewhat exotic at the time. I believe it had 16" wheels with very exotic at the time H rated tires(goodyear eagles). Nice overall interior and great seats, almost as good as the wonderful 1986 Mustang GT recaro clones. Was a very good handling car, except for torque steer in 1st and its propensity to light the tire up like crazy.

I had a red 86 Escort GT with a 5 speed. LOVED that car. Always wanted an EXP (post-frog eye era)

That the same color I had..I'll have to see if I can find the photos of my Escort GT getting built

the only thing that sucked on that car was the paint job..It oxidized really easy and I had to compound it every year to keep the paint from getting all fucked up. Aaahhh the days before clearcoat.

I purchased an '83 Escort GT in '83 (my first new car). It had fuel injection and all the brochures and car magazines said this was the first year FI was available on the Escort. See this link:

(who still has his 1983 Escort brochure)

Ahh ok I was thinking the 1.9L engine, not the 1.6 :)
