Ford September 2014 Sales -3% Best Fusion Month Ever

I see that PI sedan sales are way down, more proof that Ford should have kept building the Panthers...

Oh, wait, PI SUV sales are way up, more than making up for the sedan decline. That mirrors what I'm seeing in my area. Initially, the sedans were the predominant variant, but now, I'm seeing more and more of the SUV.

An employee of the local Chevrolet dealership (which is huge, especially juxtaposed with our modest town of 15k) drives a race red SS.... It's got some dress up options and looks pretty decent, but it suffers the same major issue as the G8: People who want boy-racer cars don't have 50 large, and people who have 50 large don't want boy-racer cars.

I thought the biggest problem the GTO/G8 had was...looking like a Cavalier inflated to 5000 psi.

Burrito Class
Chevy Express 6,142
Ford E-series 5,549
Mercedes Sprinter 2,208
Ram ProMaster 1,408
GMC Savana 1,402
Ford Transit 1,225
Nissan NV 1,061

GM vans are experiencing some fleet pull-ahead order the same way E-series saw last year. Looks like Transit still ramping up.

Taco Class
Transit Connect 4,132
Nissan NV200 1,040
Ram CV 478

Check it out... a class of vehicle that didn't exist 3 years ago is now over 5,000 units a month. Forget Taurus renaming... this IS Alan Mularly's legacy.

Enchilada Class
Chrysler Town & Country 13,029
Dodge Caravan 11,275
Honda Odyssey 8,769
Toyota Sienna 8,592
Ford Flex 1,710
Kia Sedona 613
Mazda5 535
Nissan Quest 395
VW Routan 0

You have to wonder what Kia and Nissan are doing here if Flex is beating them.

Fullsize
Ford F-Series 59,863
Chevy Silverado-C/K 50,176
Ram Ram 36,612
GMC Sierra 16,763
Toyota Tundra 8,736
Nissan Titan 977

Nissan needs to get out of this business. I doubt the mild facelift planned for 2015 will do anything to change the big picture. GM twins (66,939) continues to benefit from Ford's volume management while it conducts plant retooling for 2015 F-150.

Midsize
Toyota Tacoma 11,993
Nissan Frontier 6,853
Honda Ridgeline 978
Chevy Colorado 36
GMC Canyon 11

GM twins are not yet at dealers but I wanted to establish a base line this month so we can keep track in the future. Tacoma has 60% market share in September. We shall see if the segment expands or Toyota people will actually trade in Tacoma.

I think this is the one segment where if Ford had kept Mercury, it would have been useful as a flanker brand. And I believe there is probably something here for Ford to review... is C-Max really pulling it own weight? Prius V is starting to pull ahead.

Fiesta is doing fine against similarly positioned individual models from other manufacturers (e.g. Accent or Fit) but it is falling behind in the overall segment because it lacks product diversity. The B-segment customer profiles varies widely reflecting the fact that roughly half are lower income upgrading from used car, and half are higher income downsizing from midsize car or compact CUV. Ford should probably look at a multi-product strategy for the next generation - e.g. probably something along the lines of what Hyundai is doing... sedan/hatch for used-car step up crowd and a small coupe and funky 1-box type car for the downsizing crowd

A/B-segment Cars Sales

what about if the next MKX offers a optional 3rd row seating until the new MKT-Aviator debuts?

not sure, it seem longer than the current gen.

Even the smaller Discovery Sport has a 3rd row seating.

I think it could have one as an option. Small one of course and few space but I think the MKT doesn't have a big 3rd row either

The MKX has been successful as it is - a luxury 2 row SUV with good second row space/legroom. Stuffing a 3rd row in there just to have one I don't think is a good move. Just because the Discovery Sport has one doesn't mean normal people can actually use it.....unless you don't have legs maybe.

Save the 3rd row for the Aviator and keep the MKX with a spacious second row.

Why is the MKC not selling more? Lincoln needs to sell 3k MKC per month!

MKCs are still rare at the dealers in Los Angeles. The dealer closest to me only has 8 MKCs and none of them are the Reserve models with 19" or 20" wheels. They have a lot of models priced in the low $40k's. I would think most buyers here in image-conscious LA would only consider buying a higher end trim level.

I see a lot of new 200s around here. Half are rentals other half are mixed between base model and limited with dealer tags. The Malibu seems to gain loss traction, Fusion continues to kick ass, Dodge should still offered a mid-size .

One mistake American makers keep making is sleeping on the Cam-Corder,I don't like them but people buy them and the Japanese with do anything to keep them competitive in a low-profile way.

Including selling Camry at lower average transaction prices compared to Fusion.

The problem is the cam-cord is really ingrained into the car buying public's mind. I don't think it will always be this way in the future, but you are dealing with 20 plus years of good will they've gotten. People will eventually tire of them as long as other makers keep trying to beat them. I heard an Accord commercial the other day saying it was cheaper to own then a Fusion by some metric...something you'd never hear of five years ago.

What the heck does that mean (sleeping)?

Means not thinking ahead after putting their best foot forward (2013 Malibu) though I agree it will take awhile for the domestics to shine in the mid-size segment but it have to be consistent.
