2015 EDGE-MY IMPRESSIONS

Recommended Posts

I just read the Auto Blog articleon the Lincoln and did not want to highjack the thread so I thought I would put this out there.

I spent 4 days in a AWD Edge with the 2.7L Titanium-dark charcoal with a dark interior and tan seats.

I kind of wanted to say that much of what drove me crazy about the Edge is cleaned up on the Lincoln.

First off the vehicle drove excellent-probably the best driving Ford vehicle I have driven ( I had a 08 Edge). Where the previous version felt heavy this one is way better balanced, quieter and just tight.

The brakes are very touchy! Even the Auto Blog guy mentioned it-my rental had 9K on it so it was not exactly brand new-but I got used to them after a few days. Gas mileage was 22 mpg in mostly highway driving over 208 miles according to the trip odometer.

Seat were very comfortable and fit and finish was top notch. I had the Sony system and thought it sounded pretty damn good.

The vehicle looks great from all corners, especially the rear 3/4 view. It looks fresh but still like an Edge. I thought they changed enough of it to look like it has been significantly upgraded. One note-when you look outside the front windshield you see huge bulges that protrude from both sides-it looks weird at first and after a bit I dd not pay attention to them as well. But at first I was saying WTF were they thinking-outside they are more subtle! Panel gaps were spot on (something Ford does not always get right) and consistent all around.

I loved the smart key feature and most cars I have driven lately have this feature. This was nice and intuitive by unlocking when I got close. Also used the back hatch kick feature-thought it was kind of gimicky at first when I saw the commercial but appreciated it usefulness.

A few things that kind of bugged me were the center gauge set up-it is dominated by a huge speedo and I struggled to see ithe info on the left pod in sunlight. The fonts used just were not clear enough. One example, I used the paddle shifters to downshift and the manual gear it is shfted into shows up in the lower left really small-why!! The MKX has a much better layout to me with the speedo to the right and RPM on the left with info in the center.

Center stack is pretty good size and they have front section that is almost to deep to store a phone-wish it was a bit more shallow. They have a sweet storage door (that I did not see on the Lincoln) on the left side by teh headlight that is felt lined so you can put coins inside and not hear them rattling. When you put your hand inside to retrieve change it rubs up agains the latch portion-good idea but could of been better executed.

And the back hatch area has a storage bin on the left side-just looks super cheap by the way it is cut out and really not cleaned up around it. Kind of small details but I always look at some of those items to see if they sweated the small stuff. Which I think they have done and gotten most of it right.

Would I buy an Edge? Well first off I am not in the market for a midsize SUV-but if I was this would be at or near the top of my list, along with a Jeep Grand Cherokee.

FULL DISCLOSURE HERE AFTER LAST WEEK'S BANTER-THIS IS MY OPINION!!!

Well I thought it was the 2.7 litre engine but I must be wrong. I know the engine was very smooth and plenty of power. I didn't feel any turbo lag like I've felt with a few of the eco boost motors

I was able to walk up the vehicle several times after I had locked it earlier in the day and it would open most times. Sometimes I had to pull the handle twice. So maybe when I hit the key fob once it does not lock? I seldom hit it a few times to hear the horn since I have nothing important in my vehicle anyways.

And thans for the correction in the model year. Thought they would all be 2016 by now.

With Intelligent Access, it unlocks when you touch the inside of the door handle with the key within 3 ft. It was probably locked and unlocked when you grabbed the handle. It doesn't unlock automatically although sometimes I wish that was an option.

The 2016 Edge doesn't go into production until 12/2.

I cannot believe that they are producing 2015's until that late in the year-not doubting the information but wow that may be the latest i've seen a model year produced-wonder why? Ford is running a ton of ads basically saying any 2015 qualifies for 0% for 72 months (not sure if that stopped after labor day or not?).

That is odd to produce the 2015 that late in the year. If the produce was being changed over I could see them doing that due to delays, but there can't be too many changes between the 15 & 16 models.
