deadman64
2013 Fusion here. At my last service Ford said my serpentine belt was starting to fray and recommended replacing it. Quote was $170. I have around 40,000 miles on the car. Questions: -What mileage did you change your belt at? Should I be waiting until its squeaking? -Is $170 a fair price for them to swap that out or am I better off going to a place other than the dealer? Thanks! akirby
Sounds way too early and way too expensive to me.
hermans
The last serpentine belt I had changed as a PM measure was at 100,000k on a 2010 Fusion in 2012. I believe it was $80. at the time at a dealer. The belt was shiny, but not frayed. Edited August 9, 2016 by hermans
fuzzymoomoo
Changed the serpentine and idler pulley on my Focus at 181k miles and it was only just barely starting to make a little noise when there was a higher amount of moisture in the air. In truth, the only reason I did it was because I had to change the motor mount anyway so it made sense to just do it all at the same time. Hybrider
Sounds way too early and way too expensive to me. Yeah, it does sound too early. But if I could see any damage myself, such as fraying, cracking, or extra hard and shiny spots, I would go ahead and have it changed out, because I would rather pay a bit of extra money instead of risking having a complete breakdown like that. fordtech1
If that belt is fraying at 40k then something else is wrong. Pulley alignment etc. Normally you can tell when they need replacing when the belt makes noise when cold.
MountainLion
40k is pretty early for a belt. I have 88k on my 2013 and my belt is fine. Got 160k out of my serpentine on my 99 Mustang. Changed the original on my 96 Bronco this spring at 188k. Ditto on the alignment comment above.
