NASCAR legend David Pearson passes away at 80

He was one of my favorites.   When I was very young, he ran a USAC stock car race at a now defunct road course in Iowa.    I was there for that race and put on a helluva show.   He was also here in Minnesota a few years ago with Bobby Allison and Buddy Baker.   They were signing autographs at the fair and I chatted with them.   David remembered putting his car on the pole at that Iowa race so many years ago.

A good portion of his success was in the Wood Brother's #21 and they only ran the races that paid decent money. Back then the season championship didn't carry the importance it does today and it probably didn't earn anyone much money either. Sponsorships weren't all that lucrative either which meant the teams relied more on the money they won, not corporate dollars which have pushed NASCAR and every other professional sport in a completely different direction.
