Wow... Cadillac and Buick car sales are in a tailspin.

Tesla was the #1 luxury car brand in the U.S. last month. Very impressive. Lincoln had a nice growth spurt in January 2019 too. Cadillac has the potential to grow sales as well with its refreshed vehicle lineup. Go team USA!

In the story's comments, someone said that a different source was reporting ~7K sales for Tesla.

Tesla Model 3, like other Tesla brand automobiles, is a luxury car by any definition.

I'm just gonna leave this right here...

If you purchase a standard Tesla Model 3, the seats must be manually adjusted, as will the steering column. The side mirrors aren’t powered or heated, and there’s no auto dimming. There are no LED fog lamps, and if you want a covered storage area in the center console, you must pay extra. Unless you spend $5,000 for the Premium Upgrade, you’re essentially getting the interior of a base model Toyota Camry. (To be fair, the Camry comes standard with a covered center console.)

if you want to play that game, most F-series pickups are luxury vehicles based on price.

Well I wouldn't say the definition is just price.  And now you are comparing apples to oranges or trucks to cars. Perhaps "luxury" isn't the right term.  But for the traditional "luxury" auto makers it doesn't really matter if this new "tech" car is stealing their "luxury" sales.  It appears that people who have $50k+ to spend on cars are considering "tech" more important then traditional "luxury".  That should be telling to manufacturers who want to compete in that "market".

All Tesla Model 3 sold have the Premium Upgrade package. The "basic" Model 3 without Premium Upgrade package (which is still a luxury car) won't be available until later in 2019.

An old definition of luxury was cars that cost more then 30K a year-I'm sure its north of 40K now, since the "average" car price is in the low 30s these days.

The problem is that the "luxury" auto definition isn't hard and fast either-I wouldn't put Tesla as a Luxury car maker vs Audi/MB/BMW either.

There is a lot of tech in the F-series and that tech drives it over that 50K price point also, like the Tesla. I wouldn't call my $47K SHO a luxury car either-but yet it has everything but the cashe of an luxury performance sedan from those makes a lower price point.

Telsa is drawing sales from people who bought higher end Camrys and Accords and with various incentives could justfiy buying a Model 3 and some gas savings. My wife's supervisor did that and admited the only way he could afford it was because of that (and his wife makes bank too) and hopefully gas savings from commuting 40-50 miles one way.
