Is Ranger production better than 400 per day yet?

In time. We're still gearing up for full production in a sense that we're still getting parts racks and skids for body shop in. We have just enough for what we need right now to run, but for instance Body was sent home early last night because we were running low on skids. There should be more coming in soon I hope.

It sounds like by the time the plant gets up to speed at full production, it will be time to do it all over again for the next gen.

my local dealer had 6 rangers for a few weeks. I went in the other day to look at them and 4 were gone. Luckily I got to see a lariat for the first time. I really liked the lariat, just wish the back seat had about 2 more inches.

It's possible, with Ranger and Bronco coming out of one plant, even on a 3 crew schedule, I think unlikely. Taco has 2 plants able to produce. If Bronco is a success I think it will get priority over Ranger. If Ford gets 100-120k a year in Ranger sales they will be more than happy. I would be happy to be wrong though.

You do realize that in 2017 we built 250k Focus and C-Max on 2 shifts right?

The only thing that would be different would be the parts racks. The skids for the line usually don't change when new models come out, they just replace the pins and nylon bumpers to fit the new body, the actual structure doesn't change.

only complaint Ive had is the rear tailgate and  gaps through which one cah literally see light through...one customer is even going so far as to fabricate some rubber flaps its driving him absolutely bat crazy...

I was wondering about this complaint, so I checked out my friends Ranger and I can understand why people complained. I think it’s a small oversight on Ford’s part, since you can see right through. I don’t see it as a body panel quality issue, more like a trim issue, which doesn’t seal the box up well. If you put a tonneau cover on it to keep the elements out, that would be an issue. Seems like a real opportunity for the aftermarket.

Yeah, but not seeing any erosion of Tacoma numbers yet,,,  Only 1 month (8/2018) had greater sales in the last 10 years.

I’ve spent a fair amount of time in California over the last few months and it sure appears Cali May be the Tacoma capital of the US. There are tons of Tacos out there. With that said, it may well be the foreign car capital of the US as well.  It sure felt like a 5:1 ratio or more foreign verse domestic. Kind of unfortunate really.

I noticed it too on models I saw in the showroom.

Previous pickups I had had a fairly large gap at the bottom of the tailgate, road spray would come up into the box all the time.

My F150s have been sealed up pretty nicely so I know Ford is capable of addressing it.

Yes. Ranger is a slower line speed, about a 100 units a day less. So you can take 25k a shift off that. My opinion is mostly based off a interview with Joe Hindrichs saying Ford could sell 120K Rangers a year without effecting F150 sales. Ford is not going chase a sales crown with the Ranger if any chance of hurting F series sales. Right now Ranger prices are probably help F150 sales. People coming in for Ranger and being sold F150 ounce they see small price difference with available incentives.

If they can build 650 a shift at Dearborn and Kansas City there's no reason they can't do that at MAP with Rangers.

Answer is management doesn't want to, they would sooner build less and charge higher prices  because they're enamored with profit as a percentage of  revenue.  Build more, sell more by adding more lower trim units to the mix  and the revenue goes up but the profit percentage  is lower which equals fail to new age Ford execs. Welcome to the new paradigm that says expending resources to make more profit beyond a declared sweet spot is not cost effective.

Q1 average transaction price on rich trim mix of 90% crew cabs was $37,882 which is  $4,530 more than segment average...

To me it's not really a question of whether or not they want to right now, it's whether or not they need to, and right now they don't. The primary focus is and should be getting things running and bringing in more of what we need to keep running, like parts racks and body skids.

If somehere down the line they need to speed the line up and build more I really don't see a reason why they can't. We'll see what happens when the paint shop gets it's overdue upgrades and the Bronco comes in.

There's a plant I think in Nigeria too that assembles them knock down kit form. Not sure if that's still open or not though.

Fuzzy, questions, do the Rangers get a primer bath or is the primer sprayed on?  Has the retooling started in preparation of the Bronco assembly?  Lastly do you by chance know how many Rangers you guys produced in April?

Loving my Ranger, you guys put together a great truck!!!

Thanks, Bob

Back in the day with the original Ranger and even the Escort, they get dipped into an e-coat bath then dried off before getting painted.

Bronco retooling prob won't start taking place till next year.

I think that’s pretty standard now.  Anti-corrosive dip so it can get into all the nooks and crannies then sprayed primer and top coat(s).

Right, but I don't recall vehicles actually getting primed from my visits at Edison assembly-the E-coat was the actual "primer".

In this order:

I have no idea, I've never set foot in the paint shop building here

No, Bronco tooling hasn't started yet and nobody I've asked has any idea when it's supposed to start, or they don't want to say.

As for production I don't know the actual number but I can say that body shop has been doing 260-300 per shift depending on the day. I think Final is consistently at aroun 600 a day but I don't know for sure.
