92merc
CR pulling their recommendation on the Model 3. https://www.cnn.com/2019/02/21/tech/consumer-reports-tesla-model-3/index.html Of course, we all have strong reservations about CR and them giving a car that hasn't even been out, a recommended buy. My recommendation is don't buy CR. But I digress...

mackinaw
Oh, oh, the dreaded "not recommended" label. Ma and Pa America don't read car magazines, or frequent car forums, but many do read CR. This may hurt Tesla. Tesla's ship-shod assembly methods finally caught up with them. Can't say I'm surprised. Sandy Munro, in his strip-down, praised the Model 3's electronics, but heavily criticized its poor construction. Looks like he was right. .I.
Oh Tesla, you can cheat someone for a long time, you can cheat many for some time, but you can not cheat everyone all the time.
silvrsvt
Even more bad news-door handles fail to deploy after crash-killing driver in fire http://thedrive.com/news/26620/tesla-driver-killed-after-being-trapped-in-burning-model-s-that-collided-with-a-tree
akirby
And the air bags didn’t deflate. How the hell does that happen? At the very least this is going to be a major safety recall.

Bags are required to be vented (right?) to deflate at a certain rate after inflation.

The only thing I can think of is somehow the vent holes got blocked by the dash design or maybe due to the deformity caused by the tree? I don't think I've ever heard of a case where airbags didn't deflate.
jasonj80
I'm thinking they did deflate but were blocking the window so the woman thought they were still inflated. Door handle issue is interesting, if you go watch crash tests on them online, the door handles never start to extend after the collision takes place. If you look at an IPACE one you can see they start to. Edited February 25, 2019 by jasonj80
justins
Surely if we're going to see these types of door handles moving forward (as I assume we are due to aerodynamics if nothing else) they'll have to mandate some sort of accessible emergency door release?
mackinaw
Manufacturers have been doing aero for 30 years now. Those crazy doorhandles are just Tesla being Tesla, they think they had a better idea. Looks like they don’t. The outside door handles do poorly in winter weather, frequently freezing up. Model 3 owners in cold climates haven’t been happy. Sometimes an old-fashioned mechanical door handle is just better.

The Velar has auto retracting handles. I think the right balance are the ones where you push in one end and the other end pops out. Still sit flush with bodywork, and mechanically simple enough with no electronics to stuff up...

YT90SC
It's not just Tesla and their handles. Ford is STILL having issues with F-Series latches in the cold even after the recall (17S33) and (18N03) "upgrade". The 18N03 program is on its FOURTH revision and there will be more.
