Don't forget that Buick is a big seller in China - that's what saved it back then.

The other rationale was that Buick gave the dealers a line of passenger cars to sell. With Buick cars going away, that is one less reason to keep Buick around.

If the rumors about Buick moving to an all CUV lineup is true, your going to have products competing against one another at Buick/GMC dealers for sales.

Not necessarily. I think GM has done a pretty good job differentiating the two brands. GMC definitely appeals more to buyers looking for something more rugged looking while Buick has more of a premium feel. The Denali subbrand kind of bridges the two sides for someone looking for rugged AND premium.

The trick is balance... GM did a smart thing to downsize the Acadia to midsize to avoid cannibalizing Enclave. The Envision experiment was more of an exercise to appease its Chinese partners who really wanted to GM to Buicks from China. With GM now planning to build the next generation Envision in North America, it will be interesting to see how they juggle that with Terrain Denali.
