I think it will be the opposite-Tesla appeals to bleeding edge tech people and their kingdom is under attack by everyone in the next 12-24 months. They have older products that haven't changed visually that much (think Fusion like) and how are they going to keep customers if there is product out there that is just as good as what Tesla offers or better (in build/materials quality)

Add in government mandates and in the next 10 years or so we will see a major increase in electric car share.

Don’t forget the other mfrs have a $7500 price advantage for a few years over Tesla.

Plenty of Americans will be pissed when Mustang is electric, and maybe the electric Mustang will be made at Oakville. I doubt sales would be more than a few thousand per year anyway. I think Tesla has usurped the EV market, and other automakers will be disappointed with their EV sales.

I just hope Ford knows what they’re doing cause if they’re gonna put 5vehicles in this plant only to have them flop or low volume it will be a disaster!  It’s possible the Mustang EV could be built there but I believe that won’t happen. It’s kind of too early to speculate. We still have to build the lame duck edge nautilus til 2024.

I'm not going to underestimate the Tesla cult. They’re worse than Scientology.

As BEVs become more mainstream, cost will play more of a factor, and Tesla's "technical superiority" will be diminished.

Mainstream acceptance of non-Tesla BEV hasn't happened yet in the U.S market (as of early 2021). If and when that does happen, you are correct fordmantpw sir that Tesla's technical superiority will become less of an advantage for Tesla.

Remains to be seen how things play out. If Ford goes all-in to ensure that BEV F-150 matches or exceeds the technical capabilities of competing BEV pickup trucks, promotes it properly, and also ensures that its production is not delayed, they will have it made. BEV F-150, Transit EV, and Mustang Mach-E are Ford's most important 21st century new vehicle introductions announced thus far.

They won’t be and at higher volumes price is even more important,

Outside of maybe charging stations, they don't have a huge tech advantage over what is out or what will be out in the grand scheme of things. Beta testing auto pilot on roads is just fucking stupid!

Its like saying the Mustang GT is .05 slower then a Camaro SS...when it beats it in everything else.

The phase out of internal combustion engines is already happening much quicker than most of us realize in many regions around the world (plus California), and Uncle Joe will have us quickly joining them for sure...

Lack of clarity on EcoSport replacement certainly is a bad sign for Craiova. But they still have Puma which is probably going to overtake Focus as the #2 seller for Ford in Europe soon, after Fiesta.

But assuming Cologne switches to Fiesta EV in 2023, maybe Ford will move the old ICE Fiesta to Craiova for a couple more years. They've done something like this before when they moved Kuga from Saarlouis and Mondeo/S-Max from Genk to Valencia.

This appeared in an interview today with Ford of Europe President Stuart Rowley:

Quote

What is the future for your plant in Saarlouis, Germany, under your EV plans?

Cologne won't be the last plant to electrify. We will make more announcements as we move forward and start to make investments. We have Saarlouis, Valencia [Spain], and also Craiova, which is a very important plant for us now. Romania is very cost competitive and that's an important asset we have.

Are you done shutting plants?

As we transition, there are going to be fewer powertrain plants, equally, we may invest in electric components. Our restructuring program has been very significant, affecting about 20 percent of our workforce. We reduced our structural cost by more than $1 billion. The next phase of the transformation, however, is going to require further action that could mean rescaling or repurposing facilities or other changes. We will size our industrial footprint to make sure it is consistent with our product portfolio.

Will you continue making EcoSport?

The Puma is already by far our volume product from our Craiova plant [where the EcoSport is also produced], but we see a subsegment of people who are attracted to that more rugged product, which is doing quite well although at a lower volume [than the Puma].

Thought you would find the comments about Craiova interesting (emphasis added by me). Ford told suppliers to gear up for next gen Transit Connect in Mexico in 2023. Project code is V758 so implies it is a panel van version of Maverick (P758).

I created a separate discussion thread for this vehicle:

Fiesta mid-cycle update spy photo. Looks like it will be the first European Ford to adopt the new grille shape first shown on chinese spec Escape and have since appeared on chinese spec Focus, Equator, and Escort. But it will keep the integrated headlight instead of the spilt headlight look from the Equator.

Minimal changes elsewhere.

Some photos of Mustang Mach E debut in China: https://www.autohome.com.cn/advice/202104/1138726.html#pvareaid=102624

Chinese spec Mach E kept the same wheelbase (earlier report it will be extended LWB proved to be incorrect) and largely mirrors the rest of the world version. The only notable difference is all Chinese spec models will have the GT front grille. And in the back, "Mach E" script badge is below the Mustang logo, whereas the rest of the world, the word Mach E doesn't actually appear anywhere.

Also GT will be available in China right from the start of production (supposedly mid June) so the Mach E GT will be available in China before the US.

I thought GTs were coming here in summer (which is "mid June")?

Mach E is on the front door of our models:

It appears that the Everglades name is going to be used for the Green color that the Bronco is getting next year

I usually don't like greens, but I like that.

I won't switch from VB, but I'd actually consider that over other options.

Here are my top 5 colors now (LB would be included, but I don't have an FE):

1: VB

2: Area 51

3: Everglades Green

4: Antimatter Blue

5: Oxford White

Area 51 and Everglades green are pretty close too, actually.

Yet another facelift for EcoSport... looks like Ford is just going to keep it going for eternity.

Earlier report out of India that EcoSport will adopt a conventional hatchback preferred by customers doesn't seem to pan out as the prototype is seen with external spare which means the swing gate will remain.

That's fine.  While many of you are excited about all the BEV's and S650 Mustang coming the next few years, there are still moderate income people needing vehicles around $20,000
