Ford Germany sales Up 27.5 percent, best passenger sales since 1996

Ford Motor Company of Germany achieved a new record August sales mark with 22,713 vehicles delivered last month, per the German Federal Motor Transport Authority. This was up 27.5 percent year-over-year from August 2018 and good for Ford’s best passenger vehicle sales tally for August since 1996. In contrast, the German new car market fell 0.8 percent for the month.

“The best car sales in an August in 23 years, Ford’s highest value ever for commercial vehicles — that’s fantastic news for us. We are particularly proud that we are achieving this historic growth in Germany in a very tense environment,” said Hans Jörg Klein, managing director of Marketing and Sales, Ford of Germany.

Ford scored a 7.2 percent passenger car market share in August, up 1.6 percentage points from 2018. Passenger and commercial vehicle sales totaled 28,247 units combined, also setting an August sales record.

Through eight months, Ford has delivered 192,471 vehicles in Germany, up 10.4 percent from its pace through the first two thirds of 2018. This too significantly outpaces growth for the German new car market, which is up just 0.9 percent through the first eight months of 2019. Ford’s commercial vehicle sales total 37,173 through eight months, up 15.9 percent year-over-year.

Leading the way over this span for Ford is the Mustang, which maintains its standing with performance enthusiasts and saw sales rise 66.2 percent through August. Also up for Ford are the Tourneo Connect and Ford S-Max, which have seen sales increase 63.2 percent and 58.9 percent, respectively.

I think cost basis is high (not many brands are exporting non-luxury cars from NAFTA region for a reason) and exchange rates haven't been good. 

 

Ford positioned Edge as an alternative for the likes of Audi Q5 in Europe instead of a family vehicle. If you look at the product portfolio of all the non-luxury brands in Europe, only VW offers a competitor (Tourage) of similar size and it isn't very affordable either. Fiat Freemont (Dodge Journey) did not last very long (plus it is a POS). 

 

What Ford really needs is a compact 3-row CUV like the Tiguan Allspace.

Yes, a three row Escape and Explorer at the top is a much better plan than a costly two row Edge.  I’m curious to know whether the Chinese three row Edge May have worked better as probably a better fit for Australia where Endura competes with other three row vehicles, maybe just too hard / not worth the effort to do a three row Edge in RHD, obviously deferring to T6 Everest, 2.0 Liter diesel and 10AT in it is pretty good

With the Explorer now going back to RWD and being much bigger.

 

I can easily see Ford putting a 3 row Edge on the market in North America.

It’s much easier to sell a 3-row in that segment than a 2-row and   I think you’re right, Explorer May have just made more “product room” for a 3-row Edge

It's not so much room from a size perspective.  It's cost.   They can offer a cheaper 3 row Edge and keep Explorer prices higher.

Mid size utility market in the US still favors 2 row offerings. Toyota, Hyundai/Kia, GM, and FCA are the only one that offers both. In the case of Ford, Nissan, and Honda, they also have large size 3 row utilities (Explorer, Pathfinder, and Pilot).

The same differentiation as Escape and baby Bronco.

 

Edge will be more car like, Bronco will be more masculine/boxy.

My thinking is that it might be easy to offer edge with the third row body configuration and just sell that as a roomier base two row or optional third row, a different back offers more choices 

 

but its probably easier to keep things as they are now

That is the designation separating the Commander and Grand Commander sold in China.

 

Likely depends if FCA chooses to call 3 row Grand Cherokee  "Grand Cherokee".

There a "Suburban-Size" Jeep BOF , and "Tahoe-Size" Jeep BOF models.
