metroplex
I was curious if anyone has done pure highway driving (e.g. cross-country road trips) with their F-150 4WD's and the various engines? The 36 gal fuel tank option is making them look very attractive to me. My girlfriend and I are big into road trip vacations and her 2015 Malibu with the 2.0L GTDI LTG engine gets 32 mpg highway and has a 18 gal tank so we can easily squeeze out nearly 500 miles between fill-ups. My leases for the 2018 Explorer XLT AWD and 2017 Fusion Sport are coming up, and I was thinking of buying a F-150 SCAB or SCREW 4WD, but wanted to know if the 2.7, 3.5 and 5.0 get considerably different MPGs in pure highway driving? Car and Driver said the 2018-up Traverse had a 25 mpg EPA rating for highway but they actually observed 27 mpg. With a 22 gal tank, that makes the Traverse a vehicle I'd consider if the F-150s are not getting anywhere close to their EPA highway ratings. akirby
I have a 2018 SuperCab 2WD with the 3.5LEB and the 36 gal. Tank. I get right at 700 miles per tank in mixed driving. The 2.7LEB should be slightly better. My guess is with a 2.7L SuperCab 4WD you would see 20-25 mpg depending on speed and terrain. The sweet spot on mine is 50 mph which just happens to be my work commute once a week on backroads. I usually get around 26 on that route without major traffic. Mine is EPA rated at 18/25. I have seen as high as 28 on a few trips. City stop and go I'm usually around 20-21. And that's on 87 octane. It's also incredibly comfortable. I wouldn't hesistate to take it on a long trip especially since our MKX gets about the same (or worse) mpg.
metroplex
Interesting! We've done 3 cross-country trips and usually stay at the speed limit or slightly over, so about 70 mph up to 80-85 mph depending on the speed limit. How much would the MPGs drop on the F-150 at those speeds? My 2018 Explorer XLT (3.5 N/A) gets really good mpg at 45-50 mph (like 30+ mpg) but as soon as I get on the freeway doing 70 mph, it drops a lot! akirby
Trucks are bricks so it’s probably going to drop a lot as you hit 70 and 80. I think I’m seeing about 24 at 70 but not 100% sure.

Mk150
I know this is old but my 2019 xlt 3.5 157” 4x4 with 3.55 and load e tires gets over 20 at all speeds up to 85. My best tank so far was 791 miles coming back from Washington. Mpg at 75 is better than 65-68 for some reason. My 38 mile round trip to work hand calculates to 20.2 mpg average but one was is 75 and coming home is California traffic. Overall I’m about 2 mpg better than my identical 2011.
