2020 Nascar season

I have been a NASCAR fan for many years...and still am.  However, these demolition derbies at Daytona and Talladega are a disgrace to the sport, IMHO.    I will watch the Daytona 500 just because it is....the Daytona 500.   However, I look forward to the real racing season to begin.    From my perspective, the 1 1/2 mile tracks, the short tracks and road courses are far more entertaining than seeing 40 cars in one big pack and waiting for the inevitable crashes.

I saw a few Daytona 500's in person several years ago. The last was in 1988 which also happened to be the first year for restrictor plates on the super speedways. Bobby Allison beat his son Davey and King Richard spun on his roof down the front straight like a child's top. Unfortunately, that was probably the highlight of the race.

Just my opinion but restrictor plates were originally just as much a way to choke the Elliott's domination of big track racing as they were a "safety" measure. "Jaws" Waltrip and Dale Sr couldn't beat Awesome Bill on those tracks and were not shy about bitching to NASCAR

IMO the greatest display of Ford domination was when Elliott had an oil line come loose at the 1985 Winston 500 at Talladega, went almost two laps down and came back to win the race without a caution flag. After re-watching the start of that race it looked like Elliott must have been running a much taller rear axle gear than everyone else as he fell back several positions at the start of the race and was slow coming up to speed after pit stops. But once he got that thing wound up there was no contest.

I watched/VHS taped that race when he was 2 laps down. Best comeback in NASCAR history for me to enjoy. Always remember Ernie Elliot referring to: " the scavenger line that got loose!" during that race! I miss those days compared to today's NASCAR where we have Toyota teams dominating the sport! I wonder what manufacturer will have the pace car for millions to watch on this nationally broadcast race this weekend?  Chevrolet has owned it for the recent 7 years, except Toyota in 2015. It's been a decade since Ford had the pace car (2010 Mustang). Maybe it's Ford's turn this year?

Hate to disappoint you but they used a 'Yota Camry for the Clash on Sunday. I would be surprised if they use anything else for the 500.

You were right and I am disappointed...but not shocked! It's official: "DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 28, 2020) –  Four-time World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) Champion Sheamus will serve as the Honorary Pace Car Driver for the 62nd annual DAYTONA 500 on Sunday, Feb. 16 at Daytona International Speedway, behind the wheel of a 2020 Toyota Camry TRD.

The new face of NASCAR....

Well, in my opinion, the new face of NASCAR yesterday was Toyota! National TV gave Toyota a bountiful free surge of advertising! We all watched the drivers parade around the track in their 2020 Toyota Tundras....we saw our great Presidential parade being led by Toyota vehicles....and finally the Toyota Pace Vehicle leading the drivers around for the start of the race! In my opinion, Toyota was the face of NASCAR yesterday...for all the millions of viewers to witness!

I wasn't a fan of opening up Nascar at first, but honestly good for them. If the American guys can't handle the competition then they deserve to lose.

That said, perhaps a little protectionism is in order as far as the auto-industry goes... or at least TRULY fair trade on BOTH sides.

Toyota just does a better job. TRD is a huge part of it. You can't take that away from them. They are good at it.

it helps that they deliberately limit the amount of teams they directly support, those being the 4 Gibbs cars. Yes LFR has the alliance now but it's nowhere near the level the Furniture Row alliance was.

Well you could say the same for Ford. All the Ford teams engines come from Roush/Yates.

They also have a tiered program. SHR and Penske are on the A program, Roush is on the B program (they don't have the budget they used to), Front Row and Go Fas are on the C program, and the rest are basically hamster wheels

Our POTUS was escorted by a foreign truck - With all the sponsorship money obviously poured in they might as well just re-name this the Daytoyota 500.
