Tesla Model 3 on Autopilot Crashes into Overturned Truck (with video)

Yet again evidence that the tech is not ready for prime time:

These videos capture the moment when a Tesla Model 3, presumably on Autopilot, slams into an overturned, stopped semi-truck on the highway. Autopilot reportedly didn't see the big, overturned, stationary object. Automatic emergency braking failed to respond in this scenario too. Fortunately, nobody was injured.

Taiwan English News reports the following:

According to preliminary investigations by the Highway Police Bureau, the 53-year-old Tesla driver, Mr Huang, said that his car was on autopilot, and traveling at around 110 kilometers per hour at the time of the crash.

As soon as he saw the truck, he stepped on the brake, Mr Huang said. However, it was too late to stop the vehicle, and it crashed through the roof of the overturned truck.

Looking at the damage, the Tesla must have done some sort of last minute braking.  From the apparent speed, you'd think there would be more damage.  Certain camera's may change the apparent speed, so I acknowledge it may not be going as fast as it appears.

Driver said he hit the brakes.

Perhaps, less damage at a faster speed? You just bust right through. Trailer roofs are pretty thin and don't take much to tear through them.

I'll bet that the story behind this crash is very similar to this early Tesla crash back in 2016 - https://www.tesla.com/blog/tragic-loss

"....What we know is that the vehicle was on a divided highway with Autopilot engaged when a tractor trailer drove across the highway perpendicular to the Model S. Neither Autopilot nor the driver noticed the white side of the tractor trailer against a brightly lit sky, so the brake was not applied. The high ride height of the trailer combined with its positioning across the road."

It's a good point, the primary difference is that in this most recent incident, the truck didn't "drive across the highway", it was laying on its side well before the car arrived in the area, so both autopilot and the driver must have been in outer space to not see it. Watch the video.

Here's another one.

ZEBULON, N.C. (WNCN) – The driver of a Tesla was watching a movie early Wednesday while the vehicle was on auto-pilot when it plowed into a Nash County deputy’s vehicle, the Highway Patrol said...

A Nash County deputy and a trooper with the Highway Patrol were on the side of the road while responding to a previous crash when the Tesla slammed into the deputy’s cruiser, the Highway Patrol said...

The impact sent the deputy’s cruiser into the trooper’s vehicle – which pushed the trooper and deputy to the ground.

The Highway Patrol said the Tesla’s driver, identified as Devainder Goli of Raleigh, said he was watching a movie on his phone while the car was on auto-pilot when the collision occurred...

Goli was charged with move over law violation and location of television in vehicle.

“It was a simple lane closure and then suddenly death was at our footsteps,” said Nash County Sheriff Keith Stone.

The sheriff said the accident should serve as a wake up call.

“It shows automation is never going to take the place of the motoring public paying attention, not texting, not being on the phone, but focusing on what you were doing, that is, driving,” said Stone.
