Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Peugeot S.A. together will become "Stellantis" after their merger is complete next year, the companies announced Wednesday.

This is a "major step" as the automakers move toward completing their 50-50 marriage outlined in a Dec. 18 agreement, according to a joint news release. Everything is expected to be finalized in early 2021.

The name, with roots in the Latin verb "stello," meaning "to brighten with stars," is inspired by "this new and ambitious alignment of storied automotive brands and strong company cultures that in coming together are creating one of the new leaders in the next era of mobility," the statement said.

The most common side effects of Stellantis are:

  • headache
  • flushing
  • upset stomach
  • abnormal vision, such as changes in color vision (such as having a blue color tinge) and blurred vision
  • stuffy or runny nose
  • back pain
  • muscle pain
  • nausea
  • dizziness
  • rash

In addition, heart attack, stroke, irregular heartbeats and death have happened rarely in men taking Stellantis. Most, but not all, of these men had heart problems before taking Stellantis. It is not known if Stellantis caused these problems.

Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effect that bothers you or does not go away.

These are not all the possible side effects of Stellantis. For more information, ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist.

I think they deliberate chose a name that doesn't have constitute part of Fiat, Chrysler or Peugeot. This will make it easier to retire some of these brands later (not Peugeot obviously... this is all about the redundant Chrysler brand and weakening Fiat brand, which only has a future in South America).

Post merger, the company will have an unwieldy collection of mass market regional brands that needs culling.

Geographically isolated brands with limited upside

Vauxhall: UK

Lancia: Italy

Dodge: North America

Chrysler: North America

DS: Europe (but barely), China (but barely)

Widely distributed brands that needs some realignment

Peugeot: Europe, Middle East, Africa, South America, China (but barely)

Citroen: Europe, Middle East, China (but barely)

Opel: Europe, Middle East, Africa

Fiat: Europe, Middle East, Africa, North America, South America

Ram: North America, Middle East

Brands that has global footprint

Jeep: Europe, Middle East, Africa, North America, South America, China, Asia Pacific

Alfa Romeo: Europe, Middle East, Africa, North America, South America, China, Asia Pacific

Maserati: Europe, Middle East, Africa, North America, South America, China, Asia Pacific

You'd swear the CNN person must have been reading our thread here...

https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/16/business/stellantis-name-fiat-chrysler-peugeot/index.html

"Fiat Chrysler and PSA Group will have a new name: Stellantis. Yes, it's dumb"

Is it a new medication for a medical condition you never heard of, where the drugmaker's ad tells you to "ask your doctor?"

Is it the umpteenth new streaming service of 2020?

Is it a new app or social media platform that your kids are enjoying before their parents discover it?

None of the above.

......

I think that the new company should undo the dumbest thing FCA did, which was to separate Dodge and Ram. Combined, you could easily have 10 vehicles or more. Not sure what you'd do with Chrysler. The European lineup is a hot mess, with four overlapping mass brands(Opel/Vauxhall as one "brand")

Definitely agree with you about Dodge and Ram.  I believe the original intent was to position Ram to be sold later on, but that never took place when they were using it as a cash cow.

I think Dodge and Ram came out of this as much more focused brands.

  • Ram:  You know its a truck or commercial vehicle.
  • Dodge: You know its something sporty  / in your face (especially now the Caravan and Journey are gone).
  • (..and we all know Jeep brand is one of the strongest there is and speaks to rugged CUVs and SUVs.)

I also think if the trucks had stayed as Dodge they never would be as successful as they are now.

Driving a Ford or a Chevy could be a sporty car, a massive commercial vehicle, a tiny subcompact CUV or an offroad SUV.  There's something to be said for more, but FOCUSED brands.

The odd duck out really is the Chrysler brand. It is supposed to be the "people mover" brand but it has yet to realize any cohesion.

The original idea behind Dodge/Ram divorce was the people were calling the truck Ram 1500, Ram 2500 etc. meaning the name was stronger than the brand. Like the Acura Integra situation where people were a lot more invested in the name rather than the brand. And there was also a very serious study by Sergio to kill the Dodge name and focus on Chrysler. So the solution was simple... rebrand the truck as Ram (build on the strong name) and mothball Dodge which they did after Dart failed to gain traction - there hasn't been a new Dodge model since Dart departed and there was no replacement planned for any more the remaining models (that seems to have changed lately as Durango has been given a stay of execution).

Technically the number of brands in North America really doesn't matter because Chrysler, Dodge, Ram and Jeep are one single dealer network. There are no stand alone Chrysler or Dodge or Jeep dealers anymore. The real issue is the overlap... as long as they don't go back to the old days of simple rebadges, it doesn't matter that Chrysler and Dodge each have only 2 models.

My guess is that Chrysler 300 will eventually go away because Dodge Charger and Challenger have become much stronger nameplates with the performance focus. So Chrysler will be left with just Pacifica and Voyager.

The big problem for Sillynamtis (yes I misspelled that on purpose) is in Europe. They now have a collection of brands that are largely the same so it will take some time to rationalized what each brand stands for. It took VW about 10 years to revitalize Skoda as a "budget VW" brand and to arrive at the conclusion that SEAT is best just managed as a Spanish regional brand.

Sillynamtis will need to figure out much sooner whether Peugeot or Opel should fill the "VW" role and what to do with the one that doesn't get to be the mainstream brand. I think Fiat is going to become a small car specialty brand and Citroen is going to become a CUV brand.

That’s funny, because I still inadvertently call the Rams Dodges more often than not.
