Ford to Dealerships: No Markups on New Bronco Reservations!

Recommended Posts

Kind of a random thought, but the dealership model is so outdated; At this point buying a car should be as simple as going to Ford.com

Yes, I know franchise laws blah blah blah... And I do support the jobs associated with dealerships... I just think it's funny that you can reserve and even "build" your car online but you have to finish your order with a brick and mortar dealer. I'm not arguing against dealers, but It might be nice to have the option of buying straight from Ford over the net. I think Tesla tried that with limited success.

So now there is a second first edition ?

I'm waiting for a second edition cause I can't afford any edition right now after buying the Aviator?... never thought I would be second guessing that decision so soon!

The GT is our first step up from Ford to Lincoln, so saying it's the most luxurious car we've ever owned doesn't do it justice.  But we've checked out the other high end brands at car shows and have ridden in quite a few that friends have... and IMO the Aviator is hands down the best of the best in it's class.  It looks far better from any angle outside and it's pure relaxed luxury inside with amazing looks, textures and functions... and ours isn't even a Black Label.  The combination of Blue Diamond exterior, Medium Slate interior, and GT wheels is just stunning.  We haven't been on a long trip in it yet but for our daily driving it gets over 80 mpg when starting out with a full charge, plus it has more punch than my 03 Mach 1.  Now back to the Bronco... had I known how awesome it would be before ordering the Aviator it would have been a battle of the spouses on which one to get... so I still wouldn't be getting a Bronco, lol.  Sure would be nice to have both!!!

Anyone know what the reservation limits are for the other trims?

Ford's website is already saying that due to high numbers of reservations, deliveries may extend into CY 2022.

Deliveries start has slipped from April to June next year so, I'll be curious to see how much actual dealer stock there is.....

I feel like if what they're saying is true about filling all reservations before stock units, it sounds like there won't be any for a year and a half at least.

It depends on how many people follow through with their reservations and convert it to an actual order. Someone else mentioned it earlier in the thread and I agree I think there's going to be a fair number of people that will get sticker shock and balk at placing an order. We saw it happen a little bit with Ranger and Explorer.

Concur with fuzzymoomoo, I would guess that after subtracting the 7000 First Eddition models from the total production capability, the number of other trims produced the first model year would just be based on whatever trims have reservations that convert to actual orders.

Yeah, that's true - there won't be a 100% conversion rate for reservations, but I still expect it to be high - at least 75% I think.   A big question too - many people reserved 2 - some at different dealers - so in those cases, 1 is almost sure to be cancelled.

*Until it comes time for those who reserved to place an order in December (knowing that it could be well into 2022 before the order is delivered).

That is where the people at the tail end of reservations might bail out.

But also keep in mind worse case scenario is Broncos not making it to dealerships in June, and 2022 would "only" be 6 months later.

Lets go best case-first Bronco reservations start hitting dealerships late April and the plant can put out 10-12K units a month out...that would be around 100K units by the end of December. working 12 hour days at 40 units an hour. I'm basing this on old numbers I heard years ago when my dad worked at Edison..they could do abou 40 units an hour with Rangers and it was up to 50-60 when they did Escorts/Lynx and maybe Pintos way back when.

I think Ford can get at least 80% of reservations out before the end of 2021....but that is an unknown until we know the total reservations...

We will be running 2 10 hour shifts 5 days a week with occasional mandatory Saturday production and maybe a voluntary Sunday here or there.  I don't know what the final line speed will be but right now I think they're at about 55 an hour or somewhere around there.

I read an article that said Ford will sell about 100,000 Bronco the first year, and make $7,500 on each one it sells, and make $1 billion profit on the Bronco. Didn't mention the Bronco Sport. Hopefully Ford can sell a lot of upper trims on the Sport and make a decent profit.

The math there doesn't work.  That would be $750 million in gross profit if they sold 100,000 units at a $7500 gross margin.  Then you have to add in amortization of development expenses, tooling, and SG&A to that.  Even if they included those expenses to come up with $7500 in net profit, you would still need 33% more production to get to $1 billion.

Does it really matter when a vehicle debuts?  The customer base stays the same.  If you lose some early buyers due to delays there will be new buyers later who had to wait anyway.  It’s not going to make a difference to Ford.

Other than bad public relations, probably not much.  There would likely be someone there to backfill the lost customers.

Well, think about it.  Sales for popular vehicles stay pretty much the same every year with minor swings at the beginning or end of a significant model change.  It won't change the number of sales it just shifts the timeline.
