Three Row Ford Escape?

There are competitors (Hyundai Tucson for one) that are rumored to be available in a third row configuration in the future.

Personally-I would move up a segment if I wanted a third row SUV/CUV.

I think the Rav4 and CRV come with a 3rd row in other markets.

I still don't see the Edge going anywhere-it still sells well in NA and I'm assuming it sells well in China also, since its offered with a 3rd row over there.

Theres' been rumors of a smaller 3 row vehicle coming from Mexico, but these where originally matched up with the smaller B class vehicle that may or maynot morphed into the Bronco Sport.

The article only talks about it for Europe not NA.

it mentions Australia also.

I'm thinking that if this becomes a thing, its going to be on the LWB C platform that the Maverick and Transit Connect are built on.

Its not like the Escape is suffering for second row space...they are adjustable.

This is/was the Ford Europe proposal to replace Edge - a narrow C2.

The US proposal was CD6 Edge.

The Asia Pacific proposal was a wide C2.

Looks like the Euro proposal won out. It may also appear in Asia Pacific... China is a big market for compact 3 row CUV.

Maybe the supposed cancelation of CX758 also has something to do with this Grand Escape.

I never understood 3 row compact SUVs. It seems like it’s punishment to make anyone sit back there and you get less cargo space.

is the fusion cuv still in the works? I remember the mule spy pics of it had an escape front end. I wonder if that could have been this 3 row escape instead?ford-fusion-crossover-lifted-wagon-repla

Yes it is...its going to be the Subaru fighter. The three row Escape could have been that funky blockly mule we thought was the Maverick, before the latest Maverick spy shots popped up with sheetmetal similar to the Bronco Sport Front end.

Did some digging into the C platform:

The LWB Transit Connect is 120 inches long vs
104 for the Transit Connect SWB

The 2020 Escape is 106.7
The Edge is 112.2
The Flex was 117

If they went with the full LWB platform, it would be nearly the same size as the Flex was, but narrower. I'm guessing they are looking at splitting the difference between the Escape and LWB TC...a 112 inch or so Wheel base would work for the Fusion Sportback and a compact three row vehicle.

Don’t you have more cargo space with the 3rd row down?

The 3rd row is aimed primarily at children but adults can use it in a pinch.

I was assuming you buy a 3 row compact suv because you have a lot of people to haul (so the seats would always be up) and it’s cheaper than an explorer or expedition. Maybe people buy them just in case they need to carry an extra person here and there though. From the pics I’ve seen of other vehicles in this segment, it looks like even kids would barely fit back there.

Sounds like it could be useful for Europe or Asia. USA customers tend to be too super sized for this. Even young, fit, parents could end up with back strain working a car seat in that 3rd row.

A car seat wouldn’t fit back there I’m assuming. It was a tight fit in the second row of our escape.

I assume that there is still some cargo space lost to the storage of the seats, when not in use. Unless the seats can be removed.

No way you could use a car seat back there.  Car seats 2nd row, older kids in the back.

Sure but I’m assuming you also have more length.  at least that’s how Ford did the 3 row edge.

If it’s the same length then you’re right.

they also changed the shape of the lift gate and the body side around the d-pillar.

The Edge grew 16 inches...

That's huge! The Explorer is only 10 inches longer than the Edge.

I'm thinking its wrong...I pulled up a site that had the overall length of it as 4878mm (192 inches) for the 7 seater...but the 5 seater was listed as the same length.

OL for the Edge in NA is listed as 188.88 inches or 4795.52mm

A 4 inch stretch makes more sense than 16 inches...because it would be longer then an Explorer (199 or so inches long)

You guys are over thinking this. Ford just want a competitor for VW Tiguan Allspace, Nissan X-Trail (Rogue) and Peugeot 5008.

Just look at the clusters of competitors from a worldwide perspective (rather than US-centric one) and think of Ford's professed desire to be the preferred SUV brand for the masses. I just picked 3 random competitors from each segment to illustrate what Ford is trying to accomplish here with a 7 seat Kuga - it is the missing hole in the line up.
