The only company that is "independent" is Mazda....Volvo is betrothed to Geely and JLR is likewise bound to Tata.

Yes sir. Even the independent Mazda has a "long term partnership" with Toyota in terms of technology sharing as valve mentioned. Though Toyota only owns 5% of Mazda shares.

Geely and Tata are much better stewards of Volvo Cars and JLR than Ford ever was with those companies.

Without Ford's intervention, Jaguar would have been gone 10+ years ago. Geely has no other place to go but up with the purchase of Volvo and Tata getting their hands on Land Rover is like Snuffy Smith bagging the prom queen and never letting go.

So what do you guys think of GM's relationship to Korea when it comes to small CUV's like the Encore, Encore GX, Trax, and Trailblazer. All are sales hits and GM can't keep the new Trailblazer in stock. Again, wish Ford still used Mazda's expertise with small vehicles.

True old man Tata bought Jaguar/Land Rover for the prestige and agreed to the heavy investment

plan stipulated in the sale by Ford I understand that was a major sticking point with many prospective

buyers. Volvo was sold with similar conditions to Geely, Ford made sure the brands went to good owners.

GM Korea was hit hard by the parent company's decision to sell Opel and Vauxhall, and to exit many other markets where GM Korea vehicles were exported such as India, Australia and Thailand. When GM closed its Gunsan assembly plant, the distrust that some government officials in South Korea had of GM became worse.

But things seems to have stabilized now. As you mentioned Buick Encore & Encore GX and Chevrolet Trax & Trailblazer are successful not only in their home market of South Korea but in the other regions where GM exports those products.
