No, boxer engines are just like regular engines, except the cylinders are flat instead of inline or in a V. They still have heads and valves. Boxers are better for air cooled engines because the layout lets you get maximum airflow over each cylinder (aircraft, motorcycles, and old Bugs). The main difference between a flat or opposed piston engine and a boxer engine is that the boxer pistons have separate crank pins and move in opposite directions while the flat engine pistons share a crankpin and move in the same direction. Boxers are not the same as a flat v style engine due to how the pistons connect to the crankshaft. See my previous post.
twintornados
Fellas, all the speculation of what type of ICE motor is going to be used is moot....I fully believe that Ford will come up with a power option that will be (if you'll excuse the pun) outside the box type thinking. https://www.wattfuelcell.com/portable-power/watt-imperium/ Edited October 8, 2020 by twintornados

SoonerLS
FWIW, our work vans use gasoline-powered generators to run the equipment we need. They normally run 6-8 hours per day, so they could do the job as a range extender, but their maintenance schedule is a lot more like a 1930s vintage car than a modern car. Ain’t nobody got time fo dat these days. Using something like those tiny EcoBoosts with their modern maintenance intervals would go a loooong way toward making them more palatable. Ford has thought of every contingency and obviously has a good workable solution that we're all dying to see.
