NHTSA Opens Investigation Into Widespread Tesla Media Control Unit Failures

This is almost certainly going to turn into a safety recall because it impacts safety equipment like backup camera, ADAS, and turn signal. As mentioned in the Jalopnik article, so far Tesla has only done a warranty adjustment program, and replaced eMMC modules or MCU a case by case basis. A recall will force Tesla to provide updated hardware for all affected owners.

This must be an example of Tesla’s “superiority to all incumbent automakers when it comes to designing, engineering, and marketing BEV.”

 

Funny you’d think, with Tesla being so far ahead of all incumbent automakers, that a forced recall wouldn’t be necessary.  Why doesn’t Tesla exercise their superiority and replace these units proactively?

Tesla has been proactive in extending the warranty for the eMMC module in the affected MCUs, and reimbursing owners who paid for that repair based on terms of the original new vehicle warranty.

 

The issue is that Tesla's warranty adjustment program is not a safety recall. Tesla says that no injuries or collisions have occurred as a result of the issue. However, the issue does affect safety related functions such as backup camera. NHTSA is pretty strict about stuff like this, that's why as I mentioned before it's almost certain that affected Model S and Model X will eventually be recalled.

If that were the case there would be no reason to have an engineering analysis and potential recall. 
 

However that’s not the case and Tesla is going to be ordered to recall.

Tesla will almost certainly be ordered to recall the affected vehicles, that is correct. As mentioned earlier, Tesla's current warranty adjustment program is not a recall.

I'll be surprised if Tesla actually does a voluntary recall, more than likely they will end up in court fighting this for years . Also waiting for the class action lawyers to have a field day with this on top of the recall  Tesla is about to learn what being a real car company is all about. This recall would be $400-$500million in costs to replace all those touch screens, plus what ever the class action lawsuits bring.

To show how nutty Tesla finances are these days, to meet that cost all the company would have to do is issue another 500k in stock and they're golden. But they might want to do it now, not after fighting the recall in court for a few years... ;)

Exactly just sell some more shares to pay it off, probably has more to do with the ability to actually fix it. Their service isn't good before you had 165K cars to be fixed.

It's not that difficult.  Just ship the replacement parts to your nationwide network of 3000 dealers and have them do the repairs.
