The "stigma" of importing from China is a big barrier....not insurmountable, but it is a big barrier. I see a fair amount of Ecosports running around and no one bitches about them being made in India...but, then again I see the occasional Buick Envision on the road and not a lot of complaining but they are built in China for the NA market...I guess it is only bad if Ford does it.

It is bad if ANY car company does it considering China is this nation's biggest threat.

Ford has never sold anything here built in China. Where do you get your information?

He only stated, " however at one point 5 were to be imported from China." including Ford Focus (not sure of the other 4 though) before Ford whacked the entire car lineup save for Mustang in the NA marketplace, negating the need to import anything from China at this point.

Isn’t GM importing something from China now?  I agree it’s going to be and should be an issue, but we also know a lot of buyers could not care less where something is made provided it’s cheap (cough) Wal-Mart (cough).

Good find AGR sir. Ford would do well to take advantage of India's advantages for BEV and BEV component engineering and production either in collaboration with Mahindra & Mahindra or on their own.

Mahindra & Mahindra itself has a lot of expertise with BEV thanks to the Reva acquisition in 2010. On Friday, M&M put out this video that says "Welcome to a reimagined world of Born Electric vehicles".

You could stop at cheap.  Just look at the stuff on Amazon.  We’re a country addicted to cheap stuff like a bad drug without thinking of the consequences of how it was produced.  Just caring about the price.

I don’t find Amazon to be cheap, at least not the stuff I buy.  It’s more about convenience.

Do you think Ford is (possibly) considering keeping the Indian operations for EVs because they don't want to share their latest EV tech with Changan?

No, Ford doesn't have any option there. It has to share everything with Chang'an.

The issue is production capacity. Ford's China capacity are pretty well used for the Chinese market so doesn't leave much for export.

Having India plants that can send 250k vehicles to both Europe and other Asian markets as well as US or South America is going to come in handy. The next gen Territory is probably going to be a global vehicle so Ford needs production base outside China to adequately supply the markets.

Today's article on TheStreet confirms that Ford plans to use a plant in India as an export base for BEV. This is a great option for the company to expand its BEV production capacity, which it desperately needs to fulfill demand around the world. The article didn't mention anything about Mahindra, so the plant is likely to be Ford owned and operated. Ford Reconsiders an Important Strategic Decision - TheStreet

Ford immediately let it be known that it intended to produce electric vehicles in India, but for export. In particular, it plans to sell these electric vehicles in the U.S., its first market. But the group does not rule out selling these same cars in India.

"As Ford leads customers through the global electric-vehicle revolution, we’re exploring the possibility of using a plant in India as an export base for EV manufacturing," said Kapil Sharma, a spokesperson, in an emailed statement.

Wasn't Mahindra going to do something with the B562? A plant for which Sanand was purpose built, and it's still a new facility compared to Chennai. Dry state, so no drunks causing absentee problems. President of India is from that state, so some economic incentives might be possible. Right next to that Tata plant so lots of nearby auto infrastructure and suppliers. Yeah, Sanand could be something.

Yes sir balthisar, a few years ago Mahindra said it would use B562 platform for a BEV. But no such vehicle has been produced yet.

I agree with you that Gujarat state where Sanand plant is located is better suited for Ford's planned export hub than Tamil Nadu state where Chennai is located.

If I was to guess, the Indian export vehicle might be the BEV Territory, an Escape sized vehicle with low cost manufacturing base, perhaps a $30k starting price to match BEV Equinox coming in the next year or so…

If China was to produce export RHD & LHD Mustang Mach Es as well as domestic output, that plant would be absolutely humming…

Farley changed his mind again. Ford will not be building EV for export from India after all.

Wow, that was sudden. Any thoughts on whether this decision is due to Ford specific issues, or is it related to the India automotive industry in general?

Maybe the logistics tail of it wasn't make it worth while...they would have had to build a battery plant or import them?

Could be a number of things:

Maybe SK didn't want to put a battery plant in India?

Or maybe the Indian Govt attached some unattainable amendment to the tax credit deal like local sourcing content?

Or maybe Ford has another new or expansion of existing production site in APAC planned that we don't know about yet?

Or maybe Ford received a rich offer from Tata on the assembly plants that it couldn't refuse?

One thing is for sure, Ford wanted to include India in its plans but just couldn’t get the deal to work…
