Do those numbers factor in F150s built, but sitting in lots throughout Metro Detroit waiting for electronic parts? The Freep just ran a story with pics of thousands of F150s parked with missing modules.

The way I heard it was that up until now, Ford had been favouring F Series and Explorer with chips over other vehicles but yes, they’re now talking of building and storing some production without computers to be fitted later at dealerships.

I get the feeling that Ford forward built its most profitable trucks so now it can stand down plants this month while it Waits for more supplies. The hole seems much deeper over at GM.....

Looks like Ford is giving people an extra $500 if they custom order a vehicle now. 

 

Ford announced the Ford Custom Order feature and information on April 5th. I posted the information that morning...

Yeah, the projected 50% drop in Q2 production was a shocking announcement yesterday (stock was down nearly 10% today). They say chip supply should improve by Q3 (just in time for the rubber shortage to hit?).

I don’t think so because on the scale of things it’s a temporary blip and an opportunity for manufacturers to up their prices by making only higher trim vehicles with loads of profit. It also tightens inventory and kills off any idea of incentives to move run out stock because demand is just so high.

The chip shortage is just the escape goat. It doesn't explain why there is a national back order on F150 Air filters, Active grills & other parts. It's a supply chain issue from top to bottom. There is a lot of widgets stuck in transportation limbo.

Or to put it another way, the chip shortage is just an example of how many suppliers move to fill other orders when auto companies dialed back orders in 2020. Now it getting harder and harder for suppliers to ramp up production fast enough to satisfy a hungry auto segment.

Still waiting on a replacement back up camera. Recall was in October and still no news on when dealer will get part 7 months later. Meanwhile problems with this camera are getting worse. Yeah, it's more than just chip shortage.

What I don't get is why this chip shortage is affecting Ford inventory much more than GM? Anyone know why? Ford is stating that 2nd Quarter production will be off at least 50% and GM is saying around 40% and ditto for Stellantis. 1st Quarter Ford production was down 17% and GM only 13%.

 

Mullanix inventory is down to 800 and dropping like a Rock. Village Ford has very little inventory and Key Scales is down to 40 with very little coming in. 

 

At this rate, Ford dealers will have nothing to sell by June and used car stock is dropping too.

Detroit Free Press reports that GM is using build-shy strategy right now for certain vehicles. GM build-shy strategy has tens of thousands of vehicles parked awaiting chip parts (msn.com)

 

GM is running what the industry has called a build-shy strategy, where it builds as much of its vehicles as it can, less the parts that require the chips. It is storing tens of thousands of incompletely built pickups, SUVs and vans in Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Texas and Mexico, several people familiar with GM's production told the Free Press.

"We've been doing (build-shy) for a few months," said UAW Local 2209 Shop Chairman Rich LeTourneau at Fort Wayne Assembly plant in Indiana, where besides in Mexico, GM also builds full-size light-duty Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups. "We have about 15,000 trucks parked now."

GM declined to confirm figures, but said its build-shy strategy benefits customers, dealers and employees because it keeps the assembly lines humming, building its most in-demand and profitable vehicles.

Isn't Ford doing that too with FSeries trucks parked all over Metro Detroit and Louisville area in the many thousands without chips.

Maybe it's because of the fire in chip plant in Japan. Ford seems to get too dependent on ONE supplier which can be risky. Just guessing here, but Ford does have history of one supplier going down that messes up production plans.

Is the chip storage hitting Ford more than anyone else?  Is it more of the spin of other automakers? Did other automakers have a giant inventory?  I truly don't know.

 

GM seems to be less transparent than Ford as of late in their press releases, in my opinion. In regards to the Covid and chip shortage, it appears Ford would make an announcement that they would be impacted. GM would be asked about it and they would respond they wouldn't or be less so. Then 2-3 weeks later GM is impacted.

You're not alone jcartwright99 sir. The situation is very dynamic, even workers at the automakers may not know details involving new vehicle production and inventory planning.

Metro areas in Florida appear to be the hottest new vehicle markets in the U.S. right now. New car inventories at dealerships have dipped quickly in the Miami, Tampa, and Orlando regions.

Yeah, there's definitely slim pickings in the Fort Lauderdale area compared to noromal.

All the snow birders were down here to their second homes swelling the population. Now they are going, gone taking their money with them as hurricane season starts up soon. Now the slower season starts.

Interesting thought - didn't think about that.   Also, depends on lockdowns up north.  Many came here as a way to avoid them, which may extend the usual snowbird season.

I read somewhere else that this plant supplies 90% of Ford's chips.

Only back up to half production at the moment, it going to take a couple of months to get back to full production.

Ford Dealers just completed their June wholesale allocation commitments. Let's just say that the inventory situation is going to get a lot worse before it gets better. Total allocation for one dealership... 2 Bronco's & 5 Bronco Sports. No allocation for any other vehicle lines! For example... (1) 2021MY Mustang EcoBoost Fastback Premium in stock, (1) unscheduled retail Mustang GT Convertible Premium that will be scheduled for production the week of 07/19/2021 or 07/26/2021. So the store has 1 Mustang in stock and won't see allocation again for a stock unit until August production... there goes the Mustang season! The store would usually have at least 6 Mustangs in stock, mostly GT's and others either scheduled or in transit.

Wow, the situation is incredible.  I’ve never seen anything quite like it. And it isn’t just the auto industry that’s a mess either.  Many shortages everywhere it seems like.
