jcartwright99 Posted May 14, 2021 Share Posted May 14, 2021 I had an interesting/annoying thing happen recently.I had an out of blue dead battery about a month ago. I am talking so dead that I couldn't open the doors. I used a batter jumper and started right up. No problems until last night. I remember getting out of the car noticing that the engine fan was still running when I exited the car. In the back of my head, I thought if I have a dead battery tomorrow I will have a good idea why. Sure enough, this morning absolutely dead. Am I correct in think that this fan could be draining my battery? I have a powertrain extended warranty but thinking this wouldn't be covered. Anybody have any thoughts on what this could be (fuse, relay)? I could take it in but not sure it's covered and if I can fix it easily I will do it. I appreciate any input on this. Since the battery is completely drained and worked perfectly yesterday, I was thinking something was draining it. I most likely will have it tested though just to be on the safe side. I had been planning on replacing it eventually since it's near that time. Just want to make sure I fix the root cause before I replace. It could be a parasitic drain but it's almost impossible to tell until you get a new battery. If it just started I'd say it's likely that it's just the battery. I drove around for 20 minutes and then took it to Autozone to check the battery. They claimed the battery tested fine. I could take it to another place to double check since it's free. If my battery is fine, I'll replace cooling fan relay for roughly 20 bucks (based on hearing fan going yesterday after I shut off) myself and see what happens. The best way to find a drain is to wait until everything is off then hook an ammeter up to the battery line and measure the current draw. You can either pull fuses and see if the draw goes away or probe the spots on the top of the fuses until you find the draw. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

OldZX5er Posted April 27, 2022 Share Posted April 27, 2022 (edited) My battery problem was with a 2017 Escape, so it may not apply. I started getting messages on the screen that it was shutting down some things due to low battery. At first, the dealer replaced the battery under warranty. When it persisted, they found the Sync/entertainment system was continuing to draw current when the vehicle was shut off. They reloaded Sync and that seemed to cure it. I bought the navigation maps update a few years later. When I tried to load the upgrade, I got the message that I didn't have the correct hardware to do the upgrade. The dealer reloaded Sync again and ran the update. They didn't cover it under the extended warranty since it was considered an upgrade. From this I learned never to buy a map upgrade (ended up costing me about $300 in total) and never to buy an extended warranty.
