Looks like Lordstown Motors won't be a F-150 Lightning competitor anymore unless it gets access to capital very soon. Lordstown Motors Says It Doesn’t Have Cash to Start Commercial Production - WSJ

Lordstown Motors told the SEC yesterday that it doesn't have any actual customer orders for its Endurance pickup truck. Looks like this may be the end for the company.

While the idea has some merit, I doubt Ford would even consider it.

Why? Everything Lordstown Motors has, Ford is doing with Lightning and doing it a lot better.

Yes sir fuzzymoomoo, I agree that F-150 Lightning is at the head of the class right now. My thought was with one of its competitors now effectively gone, Ford could buy that company's assets for cheap. For example, the assembly plant and its equipment in Lordstown, Ohio. If everything works out, having those assets could potentially help speed up Ford's own BEV development and manufacturing.

Ford doesn't need the plant and Lordstown doesn't have any other assets. The Endurance pickup was based on GM chassis with off the shelf hub motors purchased from a company in Italy. There is a reason why no established car company is pursuing hub motors... they are notoriously unreliable and difficult to maintain in real life applications. Everyone from VW to Ford to Tesla all have motors mounted on the chassis.

Doesn't Rivian use hub motors?
