rmc523
They're working on different things coming up and running changes. The biggest news here is changes planned for '22/'23/'24 to improve range.

We now see why Ford was using the complicated gaggle of cooling pipe hoses, five valves and all those connectors, the whole thing is a lift from the existing PHEVs as is the HVAC from C2. I like the answer to why so complex? We wanted something that we knew worked and mostly assembled by a supplier. Lots of areas that can be both improved and made less costly and less complex/easier to make. Te difference in complexity of rear motor drive verses the front motor is night and day, so Ford and it’s suppliers are learning a lot of things as they progresses, I expect a lot of the fixes already baked into GE2. And with this being their first jump into a BEV, it makes sense there's a lot of room to learn and change things as they go, as we're seeing. It also makes sense that they'd reuse components from other vehicles in the lineup, and as things transition further, they can further optimize components for BEV usage. When you know the origin of MME as the E C-Max, it makes sense that the electric was a close cousin to C2, sharing as much as possible and desperate to avoid what GM did with with Volt not leverage of existing resources. ANTAUS
To be it sounded like "As engineers we wanted to make sure we got out of the ballpark at first and make it overkill", then a touch of "Well, when the beancounters get to it next year, we will change components just so they are ....Just enough".... LOL That's the first thing that came to mind.... But seriously, its a fast-changing industry, what was the norm 2 years ago, isn't now, and so far, at least they are willing to improve the product year by year, then the typical "rot in the vine" ways they have had at other times.
jpd80
To know anything about Ford, they were terrified of new systems being points of error, so that’s why some critical areas were extensions of known mature PHEV systems. its also good cover for the origins of the vehicle……

Haha, I don't know if it's fair to say "just enough". But not overkill.
jpd80
The irony here is that all the decisions on changes were baked into GE2 four years ago under Hackett as learnings from the off track GE based BEV., evolutions of MME will be a natural consequence as suppliers change in line with Ford’s improved designs, we can only imagine the savings from that.
